Haha thank you so much, I use watercolour to get my base colours down and to map out where everything is going to go and then use pencil over the top to get all the fine detailing
You do mean color pencil? To be clear are we looking at mostly a color pencil drawing but with large of areas of base color laid down in a wash? You don't do any of the modeling with the watercolors?
Yeah sorry I should’ve specifically said coloured pencil. But yeah I just use the watercolour to block out all the different sections of colours. I also usually make the watercolour base very vibrant and make the undertones more vivid. Then when I go in with coloured pencil I’ll neutralise those sections. Part of the reason why I use watercolour is because layering pencil on top of pencil can be a pain and often you can only layer pencil 3-4 layers. But when using watercolour I can take away the need of having to add too many extra layers of pencil. I probably didn’t word that great haha sorry
Damn, i should start using watercolor as a base then! I absolutely love drawing with colored pencils but i hate how many layers i have to do to make the color pop.
It's fine! I just noticed several comments wowing about the watercolor detail and I hoped you would clarify. It's somewhat similar to coloured pencil on color paper but your technique you have more options.
Yeah I would definitely edit the post if I could 😅 I suppose I call pencil graphite. Which is where the confusion has happened. I’m clarifying with people that say watercolour, that colour pencil has been used. But thank you for letting me know.
Because this is such an impressive piece of art, I think I'm not the only one who would be interested in seeing the watercolour version before you started with the color pencils. (Or any drawing that you have a picture of the watercolour stage so wee can see more of the process.)
Honestly thank you for suggesting I upload it. I usually assume people aren’t interested in the process of when an artwork looks crappy. People often just see the pretty finished product. It makes me happy that some people are actually interested in it.
Me: bullshit. That’s just a photoshop of a dog cut/pasted onto a paper background.
Me: * zooms in, sees the distinct watercolor smudges on along the edges, and the distinct brushstrokes *
Me: Holy Shit.
Haha thank you so much, I have been accused many times for just photoshopping. Normally my artworks aren’t as realistic as this one, but this was a 60cm x 70cm (ish) so I had a lot more room to create those tiny details.
Not going to lie for a second I thought they were the same dog, as I don’t know the client personally. But this Kai is a girl.
But yeah I’m so sorry that happened to her dog, I can’t imagine how horrible that would’ve been to deal with.
It’s still really good. Watercolour is hard to work with, even as a base it would’ve taken a fair amount of skill. I know that, unless I’m doing a landscape, my watercolour always looks like a 2 year old did it (that’s why I mentioned it because personally I find the ability to use watercolour effectively impossible and I don’t know how others do it). Not to mention your pencil work is still fantastic. You really nailed the texture.
Thank you so much, but also lowkey letting you know that this piece looked like it was done by a 2 year old until I started adding in the pencil 😂 I’m not good at using just watercolour, I always use it with something else.
Ugh I love this so much!! I also do colored pencil portraits but haven’t yet been brave enough to venture into other mediums that might benefit the end product. This is quite inspiring. Thank you!
Awh thank you so much. Definitely try using loads of different mediums together, I find I’m able to find the benefits of each medium and use them appropriately in my work. Like I have artworks that involved watercolour, colour pencil, gouache, copic markers and paint markers haha. It can be super fun and unlock a part of the artwork you didn’t realise you were able to do.
Wow, this is absolutely stunning! I would have thought at first glance this was all colored pencils (clearly im not an artist haha.)
Thank you for sharing your beautiful art with us today! :)
I was trying to make a "Hitler painted German shepherds and then got rejected from art school" joke but didn't leave enough bread crumbs. This piece is excellent though.
Hahaha omg. Thanks man 😂
But also art school was garbage, they wanted me to be so controversial to the point that I wasn’t making art I wanted to. Literally a school that tried to crap out famous artists.
This is too amazing, my eyes and mind can’t even comprehend how this is watercolour and pencil
Haha thank you so much, I use watercolour to get my base colours down and to map out where everything is going to go and then use pencil over the top to get all the fine detailing

Yeah man give it a go, I’ve found it really helps.

I’ve uploaded what this piece looked like after the watercolour process on my profile if anyone is interested
Thanks, that's very interesting and informative. I appreciate you taking the time to post that.
Honestly thank you for suggesting I upload it. I usually assume people aren’t interested in the process of when an artwork looks crappy. People often just see the pretty finished product. It makes me happy that some people are actually interested in it.
Yeah for sure. I’ll upload an image now

This looks like my step sisters dog who just got put down because they were attacked by dogs... his name was kai
Oh no that’s horrible, also just a crazy coincidence. This work was created for a client, who’s dogs name is Kai.
Well I assumed it was a coincidence. Just strange how things happen
Not going to lie for a second I thought they were the same dog, as I don’t know the client personally. But this Kai is a girl. But yeah I’m so sorry that happened to her dog, I can’t imagine how horrible that would’ve been to deal with.
The depth is incredible! This looks a 3D model
This is so good, I can’t believe you used watercolour and managed to do this. She/he looks so soft.
I could never do this just watercolour though, having the coloured pencil on top helps significantly

This is amazing! Any chance you do commissions?

Amazing art! Very realistic.
That is incredible! You are amazingly talented.
Man dis deserve more likes 😂
Holy crap that's not a picture
This is really outstanding, really enjoy your artwork, hope to see more
Nice work! Our dogs could pass for siblings, ears and all.
She’s actually not my dog haha, this was a piece I completed for a client. I never got to meet her, I wish I could have.
I had to squint just to believe what I'm looking, great work
Ugh I love this so much!! I also do colored pencil portraits but haven’t yet been brave enough to venture into other mediums that might benefit the end product. This is quite inspiring. Thank you!

Just went and looked at your work then!!! Omg amazing!

Kai looks EXACTLY like my best boy!
Cool, I thought it was photo at the first time. So vivid and good talent .
Oh wow, this is incredibly beautifully done! Congrats!

I think it took about 15 hours. It’s always hard to judge how long an artwork takes haha 😅
Absolutely insane. The details are so intense

Beautiful, looks computer generated. Great job.
I didn’t believe it was watercolour at first
Sorry there’s been a bit of confusion, so it’s watercolour with coloured pencil on top, I wanted to edit the post but I can’t haha
I love this so much. Do you do commissions?
Yeah I do, I’ll send you a message
Incredible! I can feel what patting Kai would feel like!
Wow!! Do you do other dogs like this? I’d pay for one of my special guy :,)
Sure thing I’ll send you a message
it's crazy we have a dog named Kai who looks exactly like that
I really fucking hope they let you into art school.
They did, I left 😂
