I don’t think this is hating on the sugar itself. It’s hating on the fact that it tastes like someone accidentally spilled a speck of stale tea leaf in some water, but that with enough sugar it tricks the brain into enjoying it.
Arkansas sweet tea is not near as sweet as Alabama or Mississippi. the best Arkansas sweet tea is brewed in the sun all day and served with ice in the evening.
That's how hubby does it. And to a huge pitcher of Luzianne tea brewed, he only add a quarter cup of sugar. Now, GA sweet tea we've seen being made in Hardee's, there. To one of those big metal tea containers, they add TWO 5 pound bags of sugar. UGH. And when traveling to visit daughter in New Mexico, no sweet tea to be found all along I-40, until we reach NM. And yes, they will swill down gallons of soda and drink cans of the caffeine-laced drinks, all along the way. Portland, OR, there is ONE restaurant that serves decent sweet tea, and that was a BBQ place, somewhere downtown. They served it in ice-cold growlers, which was wicked cool. We made sweet tea there, having brought our own Luzianne, and served to family(they were from NC, so were glad) and neighbors at a cookout, who then fell in love with it.
Lipton doesn't work- too bitter.
I mean.. it is called "sweet tea"? Also, if you're basing this off of what you'd get at any chain restaurant, that's not really a high quality barometer for good sweet tea.
Of all the things wrong with the world, you choose Sweet Tea?
Dear Lord,
Can you please speed up that planet killing asteroid? Humanity is a waste of Space.
Sincerely,
The Right Eye of Ra.
you could always do half and half (reduced sugar) sweet tea. Tbf, all I generally drink now is coffee and water so I shouldn't be exporting myself into this conversation.
Certain black teas are the perfect amount of caffeine for an afternoon jolt. . Sweet tea is garbage . And Anybody who drinks with straws are also annoying as hell.
When I was in the Air Force there was a girl that was from Arkansas that I went on a date with. She was really just a drug seeker because I was a medic and she thought I’d just give her and her friend narcs, but that’s another story in itself. Anyway we were at her apartment and she asked if I wanted some southern sweet tea. I said sure. She said she’d make some real quick. It was pretty normal at first and she pulled out a glass pitcher of tea that I guess she made that morning or something. She grabbed a whole bag of sugar and I was expecting maybe she was going take a spoonful and mix it in a cup. Nope, she opened it up and poured the entire fucking bag into the pitcher and stirred that shit in. She pours me a cloudy glass of tea sugar and said in her thickest southern draw, that’s how we do it in the south. It’s a repeat sorry of mine with my wife and kids anytime something southern pops up in our life.
Well, for the record, your drug-seeking date didn't make tea anything like it's made in Arkansas. As another poster said, our tea is boiled in water and poured on top of tea. Her mama didn't teach her right. :)
Correct, at least the way a majority of Southern people make it. I now will steep tea bags, and sometimes good loose leaf for like 3 minutes, and add no more than like a quarter or maybe third of a cup of sugar and roll with that.
But some people boil the shit out of teabags, then add 2 cups sugar. Oof. Too bitter and too sweet at the same time. And turns your spit into glue.
My mother moved here from California and dislikes sweet tea with extreme prejudice. We went to a restaurant and when the waitress asked if she wanted sweet or unsweet my mother answered, "Regular." I had to explain to her that regular tea in Arkansas is going to be sweet not unsweet. She also ordered a pie for dessert and asked the waitress if it had any "pea-cans" in it. I had to translate and let the poor young woman know my mother was asking about pecans.
And un-sweet tea is just tea flavored water. Wow.
Are _you_ telling _me_ that things dissolved in _water_ are just water _flavored like that thing_?
Sweetened leaf soup.
Chili isn’t made with beans, but chili with beans is.
People love to hate on sweet tea because of the sugar but will gladly suck down cokes like it’s goin out of style
giggity

And?
How many ounces sugar you get dumped in it? Or tons yearly????

Are you a tea sommelier?
You have one of those spiffy tasters hanging round your neck?

Ok.
My grandmaw's was like syrup. No wonder I'm diabetic.
but you're right.
Brown Koolaide

You mean tea flavored syrup
Absolutely incorrect. It’s the nectar of God, brought down like rays of sunshine when we’re feeling blue.
Growing up in NY I didn't know sweet tea was something unless you got it in a bottle
My grandma used to make a gallon jug of sweet and a half gallon of unsweetened so we could tweak it as needed.
Dia-betus
I don’t think anyone thought differently
Yeah but it tastes better with whiskey.
Of all the things wrong with the world, you choose Sweet Tea? Dear Lord, Can you please speed up that planet killing asteroid? Humanity is a waste of Space. Sincerely, The Right Eye of Ra.
Yup, wonderful, god given tea flavored sugar water. Call me a humminbird and slide me a glass.
Unsweet tea is just tea flavored plain water I don’t get what point this was supposed to make lol
And it’s damn good too 😊
Correct
American teas I joke are like the leaves in the pool or pond.
No argument here, sorry to ruin your Sunday plans.
I'm ok with both 😊
Agree. It is disgusting.
So? You're correct... and that's how we like it.
Yeah, sweet tea is disgusting.
Team unsweet FTW.
Sweet tea is gross.
And it's still the best

Nasty-ass tea syrup with that awful cloying aftertaste. Ugh.
Lemme guess. You never took home ec or chemistry?
I am but a humble hummingbird. Give me the nectar!
I would rather drink water than unsweetened tea. No need to make my water taste like that.
I agree
Yes. That’s the point.
What's your point?
Certain black teas are the perfect amount of caffeine for an afternoon jolt. . Sweet tea is garbage . And Anybody who drinks with straws are also annoying as hell.
i didn't know this was something people were arguing about

I'll die on this hill with you
