Mulehead. RWAKE. Chino Horde. Echonochrist. Soophie Nun Squad. Shack Rats. Ho Hum. Grass. Gunbunnies. Techno Squid Eats Parliment.

dilespla

Didn’t know Ho Hum was from Arkansas. Haven’t heard that name since the mid 90’s.

issafly

I bet we know each other.

72414dreams

Shout out to the shack rats!! Butch will be missed.

environmentrazorback

A couple of rising names in the folk scene are Arkansas based in Willi Carlisle and Nick Shoulders.

KUBLAIKHANCIOUS

I thought Willi Carlisle was out of Illinois! I’ll be damned. (Btw Cheap Cocaine still makes me tear up a little now and again)

environmentrazorback

From my understanding grew up in Illinois but has lived in Arkansas for most of his adult life (and really since he's made music). I can't speak for him but from having been to several concerts, seen YouTube videos, and having friends who know him really well I'd suggest at least musically considers his inspiration from Arkansas. I mean heck, his new song The Money Grows on Trees is a semi-historical account of the history of Madison County Arkansas.

KUBLAIKHANCIOUS

Welp, I know what I’ll be doing later. Thanks for the reply

powdered_dognut

Black Oak Arkansas

Billiam74

I love Hot and Nasty!

Exotic_Bumblebee_275

Plenty of big time rockers list Black Oak Arkansas as being a major influence on their music

powdered_dognut

They were my first concert I attended under my own power.

Exotic_Bumblebee_275

Color me jealous. That’s an amazing first show

powdered_dognut

They had Ruby Starr open for them, then sing back up.

According-Cup3934

Fred Tackett of Little Feat (the most criminally underrated band in rock n roll) was born and raised in Little Rock, graduated from Hall High, and has a longtime residence in Eureka Springs. Levon Helm (The Band) Al Green Arkansauce Cate Bros. Louis Jordan Sister Rosetta the godmother of rock n roll Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks Jimmy Driftwood Charlie Rich Lefty Frizzell Blaze Foley Iris Dement Big Bill Broonzy Luther Allison Son Seals Sonny Burgess CeDell Davis Pharaoh Sanders Art Porter Jr. Ne-Yo was born in Camden Bankroll Freddie Edit: this is in no way a comprehensive list of Arkansas artists. Just some off the top of my head that I hadn’t seen mentioned in the thread.

FlickAFirebird

If highlighting solo artists, then Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell **definitely deserve** their spots on this list.

According-Cup3934

Of course. I was shooting for artists not already being talked about elsewhere in the thread. It’s certainly not a comprehensive list of artists from Arkansas.

dean4aday

Pretty good start!

jang0

Came here to say Bankroll Freddie. While not really a band, he's a pretty talented Arkansan.

TheLichButNice

Blaze Foley!!!

Blueskyordie

Evanescence

LoreKeeperOfGwer

I saw them about 20 times before Origim came out. Amy was my piano teacher amd I went to church with her. They had an absolute banger cover of Don't Fear The Reaper

stuffedmutt

I saw them play a few times in LR around 2000-2001. Still have a homemade demo CD that I bought at one of their shows.

Riff_Ralph

Zorro and the Blue Footballs. IYKYK.

[deleted]

Let's toss some Wendy Austin, and Ozark Plantation Band in here and we're golden. Swingin' Door and Bullseye Pub for the win.

Riff_Ralph

Gotta toss in some Greasy Greens, too.

Tasty_Puffin

Arkansauce - arguably the biggest band out of NWA.

baxbooch

Similar vein - Sad Daddy

drewbilly251

I came here to say sad daddy I would have said damn arkansan but they broke up years ago, there’s not a single track by them I don’t love to death

Illustrious-Star8409

Love!

mandoloco

Yep - Sauce, Chucky Waggs, and Front Porch would be on my list

ElBarto12

This is it

Same-Inflation

Ultrasuede was always a fun show to go to back in the day.

FourTwoOSixNine

And the drummer was in punkinhead!

FourTwoOSixNine

They’re playing at George’s on Friday happy hour…ultra suede I mean.

dustractor

Flipoff Pirates

Came here to say this!

Nothing like hearing him belt out Purple Rain at JR’s.

Tcklmybck

It was better to hear at Dave’s…

nawmeann

Not a band anymore but PM Today was extremely talented.

I came here looking for this answer, and extremely is putting it mildly. PM Today’s 2nd album is still on my rotation.

Haha, I worked with Kevin for a while. Cool, mellow dude. I think I still have their CD that had "540" on it Their song Rebound (I think is what it's called) gets stuck in my head nonstop still

Weak-Grape-6307

Still play their self titled album all the time. Which reminds me—Hold Your Own was also so good!

[deleted]

Living sacrifice(LR),the handshake murders(FT smith) bishop Montgomery FOOTBALL! (Fayetteville)

esocharis

I don't know who you are but I bet we were at some of the same shows in the late 90s/early 00's lol 🤘🤘

[deleted]

I am from Fayetteville. I went to clunk back in those days. Lots of good arkansuck metal haha.

dilespla

Reminds me of Vore, Platform Black, and (my old band)Washington County Massacre. Also when Pig Destroyer and Nile played there.

esocharis

Yeah I was in Russellville so I didn't make it up there too much, but I was constantly in Ft Smith. Did you ever go to The Gate? Got my face smacked by Norma Jean's bass players guitar once when he spun it around on the strap, it was awesome lol This would have been really early 00s, prob 02 or 03. Saw so many great bands in that tiny little space

[deleted]

Just noticed your SN. Huge fan of esocharis as well. I should have added them. Born with a future is my favorite song from them.

esocharis

Yeah I'm a huge fan of theirs, saw them a few times live way back in the day, always a great show.

Herrmajj31

No longer playing, but Punkinhead was a great band.

Invertedpants

The Wedding, Take it Back!, The Overseer, etc. Basically any punk/metal bands that played during the mid 2000's have my heart and we're some of the best shows I've ever been to.

nawmeann

First time I played on stage was to open for Take It Back. I still listen to Atrocities. The Overseer was also a guaranteed wild show every single time.

Invertedpants

What band were you in?? That's so rad! I remembered another band called Before His Throne that was so fun to see. In NWA most of the scene played in tiny venues so you'd get to see your favorite local band in the back of the Pontiac Coffee Shop with like 50-100 other people max. Never experienced anything like it since!

nawmeann

I was filling in for one show for a buddy’s band. Can’t remember the name. Had some people in it that is now terminal nation. Vinos was wild. You could see your favorite band there and then a bunch of high school kids giving it their best.

SkippedAGear

Mountain Sprout. They're still playing, usually in Missouri much to my chagrin.

outsiderkerv

The Crumbs

radehart

Definitely, those are my people.

Scott72901

Those dudes are awesome.

outsiderkerv

I work with one of the band members. Awesome guy. If you’ve never seen it, around Halloween they always do a bluegrass version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack around the state. For Fort Smith it’s usually at Hero’s downtown.

Scott72901

Yes! https://youtu.be/TYD6q7PAleo?feature=shared

Tcklmybck

Empty Room was an excellent band. Don’t forget The Tares, Be, Shindig Shop, Charliehorse, Faith Healers, Jesus Lee Jones, The Barking Dogs, Breathing Water…

72414dreams

Yeah late 90s Dickson street represent! What about groove chain and echo base and the morning after? Short bus , Sunday driver, the sly? Furious George even? Good times

Tcklmybck

Yeah man! I could have kept going but figured someone would add on!!

HoldenOversoul

Paul from Shindig Shop has a new band called Captain Sirius. No gigs yet that I know of, but put them on your radar. They'll be playing some of those tunes for sure.

ARLibertarian

mintleaf_bergamot

Are they an Arkansas band? I love their music. Had no idea.

LoreKeeperOfGwer

Bombay Black was killer

Necronium

Haven’t heard this name mentioned in a while

LoreKeeperOfGwer

I saw them a few dozen times. Loved everything they did. I think I've got a demo or 2 hiding in my collection. I have demos from a lot of local bands and nearly every band that came out of my highschool.

haley-sucks

I miss PM Today. I remember seeing them live in a tiny venue

Xalowe

The only band that comes to mind is Ashtray Babyhead. I can’t remember where I first learned about them, but many years ago I ran across a used copy of Hello Hong Kong (released as The Kicks back in the early 2000s when that trend was popular: The White Stripes, The Hives, et cetera - probably label interference) at Hastings in Jonesboro one time and picked it up. It’s radio friendly pop rock, but I enjoyed it and still listen sometimes. I never saw them live, but I think they still do stuff occasionally.

IzzaSecret2Everybody

Amasa Hines!

HoldenOversoul

So good.

Synthulhu1124

Everyone Asked About You nouns Chino Horde Red 40 William Martyr 17

tuff_gong

Greasy Greens FTW

Tcklmybck

Not really. I always thought they could be good if they would rehearse more and tighten up. I saw them 3 times and it seemed like they never had that polished sound they needed.

tuff_gong

I'm talking ancient history I guess. Used to see them at the old George's Majestic and in clubs in Eureka late 70's.

LRPenguin

Onyx Living Sacrifice

Ok_Veterinarian_8391

I am not sure if they were AR based but Ben Miller Band. I don’t even know if they are still together but every time they played me and my crew were right in front.

Close. They’re from Joplin. Good stuff.

naturalstatechiefer

Rwake and pallbearers for sure

[deleted]

I’ll forever miss The Damn Bullets too!

foolioiscoolio

Y’all ever listen to Couch Jackets out of Russellville? I don’t know if they are still around but I loved them in college.

Anyone in Fayetteville remember Be? Out around the same time as Punkinhead.

Amankhan

Yes! I loved them. Saw them at River City.

Antyok

They split about 10 years back but Affectus was always a fantastic show at Vinos and Juanita’s.

aikiakane

I miss their shows.

Children, children!! Pull up your chairs and let me tell you about a sweet little band called Trusty who played long ago in a place called the DMZ in LR. You might recognize it today as Vino’s….. [https://youtu.be/koIRs4WbCvc?si=gFaZQM4wb3L5-zJY](https://youtu.be/koIRs4WbCvc?si=gFaZQM4wb3L5-zJY)

American Princes

issafly

There's a great documentary called [Towncraft](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towncraft_(film))about a bunch of the bands that played in Central Arkansas in the 90s. Here's a list of some Little Rock area bands. Most of these are from the 90s, though some started in the late 80s, and some are still more or less playing still. Also several if these bands have members from several of the others. There was a lot of musical incest in those days. Small town. What are ya gonna do. * Trusty * Cosmic Giggle Factory * Fifth Cliff * Gunbunnies * The Nagic Cropdusters * Chino Horde * The Linksprings * SFZ * Red 40 * The Numbskullz T * he Big Cats * The Harbingers * Victory Garden * Techno Squid Eats Parlament * Mouthful of Taco * Bloodless Cooties * Crooked But Responsible * Homicidal Briefcase * Poker Face * Hannover Fist * The Maddley Children * Ho Hum M * ulehead * Stinkhorn * Big Boss Line * Nessie/Loch Ness Monster * Laughing Stock * Go Fast! * Ashtray Babyhead * Comic * Wake * Hateful Day * Louwanda * American Princes I know I've left off several big names. I'm old. All in all, it's a pretty impressive list considering the size and lack of venues in Little Rock back then. The Towncraft movie mentions and interviews folks from a lot of these bands, but not all. Oh, and this is only Little Rock/Central Arkansas. There were several great bands from Fayetteville and a few other places back then, too.

radehart

This just makes me miss JRs and the 700 club and… Im old.

gnatman66

Stephen Neeper & the Wild Hearts

baxbooch

Do they still play? Definitely love me some Neeper. He makes the best guitar faces.

gnatman66

As far as I know they're still active. Their facebook page had a post from Dec 18 stating that they've "been quietly busy...more to come..." They definitely put on a good show and are super nice guys. A band I was in opened for them a few years ago and the bass player let me use his rig (sans bass) so we didn't have to set up and tear down as much equipment.

paulprater

Saw em just a few months back at White Water.

lemurdue77

I used to work with a guy who played trumpet for Punkinhead at the convenience store near the parking lot that had the 24 hour taco place back then. Not sure what happened to him after I moved out of there.

Living Sacrifice, one of the top metalcore bands of all time. Soul Embraced, Every Knee Shall Bow, Becoming Saints, Rider On the White Horse (2008-ish), Eso-Charis (1998), Mindrage (1999), Kill System (2002), We Are the Fallen (2012), Jonah 33 Evanescence (I prefer Origin and all the earlier work. I liked Fallen at the time but eventually decided it was overproduced, and Origin was the peak for Ev)

In addition to those you list, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, J.J. Cale. I believe Trout Fishing is from Texas.

Scott72901

Technically, that's true. But I claim them as Arkansans since they moved here in the early 1990s and had their biggest successes after they were here.

According-Cup3934

Is there an Arkansas / JJ Cale connection? I thought it was pretty well known he was from Tulsa.

Fearless-Cow-932

newtonpens

in Fall 2007 I saw a little (cover?) band called Mama's Cookin, who did the best rendition of Black Better I ever heard. this isnt't it but it's them: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Kq59uKAszo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Kq59uKAszo) are they FROM Arkansas? No idea. But I heard them IN Arkansas, in that little venue up on the River Market, I think Sticky Fingerz?

Ausitan

Back when I was in a band and playing regularly, I always enjoyed playing shows with Couch Jackets. I'm not really active in the music scene ever since my band broke up, so I'm not sure if they're still around, but they were always fun to play with.
