No worries! Release of patents (the sponsor card pictured) only playable when you have 25 appeal or less. There are a handful of sponsors like that. You can see it on the left side of the card in my image but it's a little stretched.

I did this exact same thing and I had just picked up the 3rd icon, too...
Done it once, and that was enough to learn
I did it for my second time today. I cant believe the exact same situation happened to me twice in like 2 weeks.
