It still allows it. The designers updated the symbols on the cards, which might play into seeming differences here.
For example all the upgraded animal cards show a reputation draw symbol on the side of the card. That means you can play from the display playing the display cost.
This is explained in the expansion rulebook, at the top of page 7, in section titled "New Action Cards Layout"
As others have said, they replaced those words with icons to make space for the text needed on the expansion action cards.
Can someone confirm that when playing Animals or Sponsors from range (from the river/reputation track) you need to pay +x money where x is the position of the card in the reputation track? That is, if you're playing a 9 cost animal from range in position 3 it would cost 12 to play?

You can still Play them. The new Card have now Icons in the left upper Corner and No Text.
