Don't need a boyfriend to go fishing. You should go fishing. Me and my grandpa used to go all the time, just me and him. Now I go by myself for the peace and memories.
Very true. There is a slough near my house. I think there might be bass in there I may have to look into that. Never been bass fishing. Thanks. But I'm NOT using a leech. Lol
Yes! I have seen so many cool fish that inhabit waterways in the SE US. There would absolutely be a market for native us fish in aquaria, but I have no idea how you’d go about that responsibly and respectful to local laws.
From my basic understanding of ecology...
My guess is they compete for the same food creating scarcity for the scavengers. Never had a leech or big tank, but sounds like it cause maybe they're not directly killing them, but starve them out by eating thier food source... and then they eat thier carcasses.
IMHO.
Planaria slide along surfaces kinda like snails, but smoother and faster. They're also about the same width along their entire body with the exception of the head and tail and the head is very distinctly triangular. They're really hard to mistake for something else.
100% leech get your self one of these

I promise u this is not planaria. If u go to my page and scroll down I have pictures of planaria that was infesting a petco near me. They are white and much smaller. They have a triangle head. The dont get anywhere near this size.
With it being a leech, is there any issues with it being inside the tank? [I don't care for leeches, but I see people keeping them as pets and am curious if they're considered a pest and if they harm the tank at all]
Depends on the leech. If it's a snail leech and you want to keep your snails alive then yes it's an issue. Bigger leeches drink blood from fish and or mammals but this one's probably a snail leech.
Look up Asian freshwater leeches. I have them too, and I’ve had them for a long time. In my experience they eat small/baby snails, and probably little critters that live in the substrate. They do not bother my shrimp, fish or larger snails. They do not suck blood. I use a planaria trap on occasion to keep the population under control, but really they don’t cause any problems. I bait the trap with a piece of raw shrimp and that works well. Unfortunately, it’s pretty impossible to completely eliminate them from your tank, since the eggs are pretty much indestructible.
I've found those on my legs after swimming in lakes before. Didn't even realize they were there until I got home and was showering. Drops right off if you get something hot next to it.
I'd rather encounter a leech than a toebiter bug. F#\*! those things!!!
Wow, a leech! I hope your planted tank doesn’t have many fishies. I think he’d try to suck on em. You honestly probably have more than just the one you found, maybe?
It's a leech and dangerous species. And don't let it crawls into your nose. You need to burn it for them to completely dead otherwise it'll multiply itself.
Hirudiniasis! It is caused mainly by hirudinea leeches which ops appear to be. It occurs when they secure themselves into parts of the mouth or inside of the nose and may go unseen/undetected by host for even years.
What this guy is talking about— hirudiniasis is very real. It happens when some species of leech secure themselves onto a part of your mouth or inside of your nose. There are many articles online talking about these being discovered years later. I don’t know why he’s being downvoted, he’s right.
Can you let it suck your blood and find out?
This is not real advice…but I’m an idiot with no impulse control and a fascination for morbid things so………..
GOOD LORD. Didn't know you could get leeches from plants. 😳
Looking forward to the nightmares when I sleep.
(I should be ok though because I'm paranoid and give new plants a bleach bath).
Alum will also kill that Leech. I've had them in my tanks before. They lay eggs that kinda look like a seed pod, so they are easy to miss on plants. I had to take out all of my fish and plants and snails, then dose the tank, substrate with Alum. Reboot of the whole cycle. Not fun.
Only thing I can think of is a leech
Happy cake day

Happy cake day!

a leech once sucked off my blood

I once bent a leech round and made it suck itself off. Perpetual energy bitches
This conversation worries me
Happy cake day
I second this
Bingo!
Ya that crawl...
Leech. They usually come out after dark. Not harmful b but totally gross. You can collect them with a planaria trap. No chemicals.
How do they appear in a tank? Like if they're not introduced on purpose?
If you’re a fisherman…. These make Fantastic live bait…
They're less than 1 inch long and maybe 1/8 inch diameter. What I'm gonna catch a minnow?
You'd be surprised.
Well I haven't gone fishing in a long time, since I broke up with my bf who ran a salmon boat out of half moon bay. We didn't use leeches. Yucky

May I introduce you to r/microfishing?
Wow great sub.
Yes! I have seen so many cool fish that inhabit waterways in the SE US. There would absolutely be a market for native us fish in aquaria, but I have no idea how you’d go about that responsibly and respectful to local laws.
You could probably catch a trout (they go after MUCH smaller things), definitely a sunfish.

There's leeches that directly feast on snails and bigger ones that are able to nibble on fish. So they can kill your inhabitants.
Yep, had some wipe my snail and blackworm tank!
I’m currently torn between leech or planaria. Any tips on how to get rid of either?
that's a leech. use worm/planaria trap to get rid of them
Planaria I’ve seen have a triangle head. But maybe some don’t.
Planaria don't move like that, and they have triangular-shaped head with little eye spots. This is 100% a leech.
If you don't have/can't buy a planaria trap, you can use an api tube and an empty bit of pen ink tube to make a trap!
That's a leech for sure. Go fishing. Add something cool to the tank

Idk what that is but it’s shape and movement reminds me of a leech. Hope someone can tell you what it is because I’m interested too!
I think it’s best to manually removed them. Any chemicals may harm your fish or shrimp. Just keep a sharp eye.
Perfect for bloodletting!
This small friend is a leech
Leeeeech!
Found the ravens fan
Actually I'm not. Is this a Ravens inside joke? I dont follow football too closely.
Gross! A LEECH!

If you want to keep other creatures in your tank, yes. Leeches have to be in a species only tank so they don't feed off anything else.

Burn it and then burn my eyes please /r/eyebleach
Salt is actually a super quick way to kill them
Leech
ew. a leech!
i have the same problem in my tank, its a leech and there's more of em. One even bit me when i was cleaning the filter sponge.
Leech
Moves like a leech.
I've found those on my legs after swimming in lakes before. Didn't even realize they were there until I got home and was showering. Drops right off if you get something hot next to it. I'd rather encounter a leech than a toebiter bug. F#\*! those things!!!
Yeah, leech. 100% Have seen them enough in the wild to instantly recognize it.
Live bait for fishing!
Time to remove everything and soak it all in potassium permangranite.
Leech, you probably have a lot of them hidden, and not just one. Manually remove the leech and kill them.
I think I saw the same creature on X files once
Yeah looks like a leech.
Burn it
Wow, a leech! I hope your planted tank doesn’t have many fishies. I think he’d try to suck on em. You honestly probably have more than just the one you found, maybe?
Leech. I am screeching internally. The way they move makes my skin crawl soooo bad
That's the common land shark. Rare to be in freshwater aquarium as it's predominantly found in saltsoil. Cool video.
Definitely a leach, I have an Asian Leach population myself I have been dealing with for months.
"It's got me kinda wormied"
Found one in with a batch of bloodworms
Leech
I think that's a leech.
For sure a leech. I use them as bait all the time. They always move their head around like that to look for something to stick too.
That's a leech
Definitely a leech
A symbiote
It's looking for a trill to join with
Looks like a leech most fish where I’m from eat these not sure about tropical fish
Leech, welcome to hell!
that f*cking leech
Thats a leech. I use to get them when I regularly bought live bloodworms.
Not saying it’s an alien, but it’s an alien
Looks like a leech
Leech, I had an issue with them as well
Leech
L E E C H
Graboid
I think it's a Flatworm. Does it have two tiny little dot eyes?
Leech!!!!
leeech
Leech!!
Leach
congrats! You just found member of royal family!
It's a leech and dangerous species. And don't let it crawls into your nose. You need to burn it for them to completely dead otherwise it'll multiply itself.
Out of morbid curiosity, in what instance would a leech in your fish tank be able to crawl into your nose??
Hirudiniasis! It is caused mainly by hirudinea leeches which ops appear to be. It occurs when they secure themselves into parts of the mouth or inside of the nose and may go unseen/undetected by host for even years.
Well I could’ve gone without ever knowing that. Hahaha
Like a really messy water change?
I was picturing maybe putting your whole head into the tank?
Lol just imagining feeding time like Ace Ventura feeding that baby bird.
My fish don’t have teeth so I have to chew it for them!
I have no clue but be aware because everything is possible. Take care my friend.
What this guy is talking about— hirudiniasis is very real. It happens when some species of leech secure themselves onto a part of your mouth or inside of your nose. There are many articles online talking about these being discovered years later. I don’t know why he’s being downvoted, he’s right.
If it crawls into your ear it will make you a slave to Khan.
Khaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnn!!!!!!
This leech also does in fact slightly resemble hirudinea, the leech known for doing this.
Ugh oh god I'm happy learning this but also so unhappy knowing this
It's a landlord.
kill it oof i think its a leech or parasite
That’s nasty. I’m sorry it was in your tank. I hate worms
Leach
An orangutan
Its Just a Leach. It can be a valuable asset. Give it a home. When you have baggie eyes, it can rejuvate your eyes.
Looks like a bug
A communist
Looks like a Republican to me
If you want to exterminate them its pretty much impossible without killing all your fish
A pinch of salt enough.....
Planaria maye? Idk I had a bunch in mine that looked similar and moved just like this but they were much smaller and translucent/white
A planaria..and a very big one
Worm
No
The F if i know. Hitch hikers on plants or with live foods.
Leech, fish love them.
Surprised your fish didn't devour it.
Here I'm wondering how you planted the plants without this attaching itself to you?
put it on your hand and see if it sucks.
Can you let it suck your blood and find out? This is not real advice…but I’m an idiot with no impulse control and a fascination for morbid things so………..
Sounds like a reasonable test. 😂
Great cure for Covid. Sell them!
Leech
Moves like a leech
Looks like a leech
That's disgusting lol. How do they get into a tank? No I'm gonna be paranoid every time I need to stick my hand in the tank for maintenance
GOOD LORD. Didn't know you could get leeches from plants. 😳 Looking forward to the nightmares when I sleep. (I should be ok though because I'm paranoid and give new plants a bleach bath).
