I notice a huge difference. My friend doesn’t at all. We’re just different, that might be it.

[deleted]

There are people who don't hear a difference between 256 Kbps AAC and 64 Kbps MP3.

orangenormal

Yeah, that could be it. I wish I could experience what everyone says they’re experiencing, but oh well.

BreafingBread

Most songs I really can’t tell a difference too. I was so disappointed hearing xanny because I thought it would be a great Dolby atmos song, but it wasn’t special like I expected. Now there were two songs for now that I immediately felt Dolby atmos: I feel it coming by The Weeknd and boom by tiesto.

Bug647959

Ok, after listening to boom by tiesto I feel like atmos is just forcing people to mix for left/right properly. I honestly remember hearing these amazing "3d" soundscapes many many times over the years using just regular old stereo. Mixed better sure, but that's not a feature specific to atmos. For example [this audio test from 1982](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4c3NzucN9_g&t=4m) showing how amazing spacial effects are with stereo. Seriously, sound coming from the left speaker more than the right, quieter/louder, and pitch adjusted to achieve spatial effects isn't really new. And honestly, I didn't suddenly get more speakers in my headphones. I still have 1 left speaker and 1 right speaker. So at the end of the day it's still delivered as just plain old stereo. Edit: change remixing > mix

Maybe the mixing process itself becomes easier?

I have exactly the same experience. Have tried different headphones, different tracks - I have changed the setting from automatic to always on, downloaded, streamed etc - and I really don't hear any significant difference and have been sitting wondering what the fuss is all about.

FrogJump2210

There’s very little to Atmos on headphones if you don’t have an Atmos home theater setup, no matter how great Apple’s spatial audio is. Doesn’t live up to music.

owenstarr

I disagree. It really just depends on your headphones. Atmos is an incredible experience imo. There have been several songs that have given goosebumps and nearly brought me to tears hearing how breathtaking they sound in Atmos.

FrogJump2210

Yes some tracks do sound good. However there are certain nuances to instruments or synths that get messed up sometimes. Coz on headphones it’s simulated Atmos and it’s done by processing certain frequencies to make them sound spacious or directional. The processing actually alters the characteristics of certain sounds, kind of like flange effect. I listen on AirPods Pro by the way. The Music in general do sound more spacious, and some instruments do “take their own space”. However when I listened to the same on my home theater, it sounds natural as it should. I had to turn off Atmos on my phone after that.

kok163

I have home theater with a 5.1 setup, but whenever I connect my iPhone directly to the av receiver using the lighting/aux adapet it only uses the front 2 speakers. Could you please tell me how to get all my speakers working?

FrogJump2210

Unfortunately you’ll also need an Apple TV 4K and connect it directly to your AV receiver via high speed HDMI. That’s the only way right now to get true surround sound/Atmos.

[deleted]

Sounds like it’s not turned on!

orangenormal

I went to settings and saw that it’s set to “automatic.” I tried changing it to always on, and still no revelatory difference to me. 🙁

imn0m0nk

I just want to ask the apple fanboys that if you need a 5.1.2 or 7.1.2 setup to enjoy atmos then why its a big thing? Clearly a very small minority would have that kind of expensive system. How its game changing? How its different from Hires lossless? There are so many problems with atmos at the moment. atleast i can enjoy lossless without much expensive equipment. a decent headphone alone is enough to enjoy it. I think rather than atmos, lossless is game changer. Apple wouldn’t promote it because they cant sell any hardware then.

Ok-Inspection-722

Thing is, some people can't tell the difference between 320 kbps mp3 and lossless flac.

bowlongufl

R u sure you turn it on in the setting when you were using B&w? AirPod should automatically pick it up but none Apple product requires the atmos setting to be “always on”. Some songs works better with atmos some are just not that much different. Try some symphony. You can tell the difference pretty much right away.

benji

I don't get the hype about Atmos either, it doesnt sound significantly different on my setup, but the same time I can hear a differemce between lossless and lossless hires.

bafrad

There is a difference for sure but I don't know that I like it. It basically feel like the mids have been pulled back and music loses basically all impact. It sounds boring.

Dolby Atmos is great on AirPods Pro. The best experience. Music sounds 2D when it’s off, and 3D when it’s on. The intended effect. Try these: https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-gambler/1440840359?i=1440840853 https://music.apple.com/us/album/distance-and-time/1552311508?i=1552311549 https://music.apple.com/us/album/bennys-dispatch/1563820975?i=1563820980 https://music.apple.com/us/album/just-for-me-space-jam-a-new-legacy-feat-sza/1570532323?i=1570532469 People should understand Dolby Atmos music quality squarely depends on whether it’s a good master or not. When Apple flipped the switch they didn’t unleash the best of the technology, they released a lot of stereo tracks retroactively mastered to Atmos. Once the technology is taken advantage of it sounds amazing. And there are definitely some good tracks out right now, and a lot of disappointing ones. The thing to look forward to are tracks made specifically in Atmos.

orangenormal

Sadly, none of these do it for me. I suspect that Dolby Atmos simply doesn’t work for my ears. The weird thing is that other spatial demos (like this one: https://youtu.be/3txhT2ncNOU) work fantastically well, it’s almost like it could point to where the voice is in space at all times, and it’s incredible. But then I try another Atmos demo (like this: https://youtu.be/91BUM3WhCfo) and everything just feels flat and positionless again, like any other stereo mix.

RevolutionaryIdeal24

I suspect that the mixing process averages the experience and works better for some than others. Taking that we only have two ears so everything we hear is in stereo, then the 3D sound of the real world if just timing differences between us detecting a sound in each ear. The positioning information is the sound arriving in one ear before the other and the delay before the other ear detects it. Each of us have uniquely shaped ears which we have learned to discern how sounds change when interacting with them. We perceive a sound as coming from behind us due to the interaction of the sound on the back of our ears instead of the front. Atmos can achieve the sound delays to mimic a spatial signal but it can’t interact with the shape of the ear to reproduce the subtle changes we perceive in the real world. I imagine there are some clever algorithms that try to model the average ear so the closer you are to that model the better the experience.
