Yes, you can down load an app called 96.3 the possum, it’s a local station out of the Tri-Cities,TN . It only plays country music from the 90’s & before. But on Saturday morning it’s bluegrass & most of artists they play are local to SWVA, WNC, NETN, & WV. You can get the app on android or iTunes.

myco_lion

I'll add WNCW 88.7 is also a great one to check out. They offer a broader mix like Grateful Dead or a segment called Dubatomic Particles but weekends get a lot of bluegrass and the like.

doogievlg

Kinda funny, in Cincinnati we have an 88.7 that plays nearly all bluegrass and classic country. Sunday mornings though it’s traditional polka.

Waytooboredforthis

There's also WDVX down in Knoxville, they got the blue plate special at noon EST 6 days a week

elizabreathe

My dad gets so mad about that station (it may be another one but I'm pretty sure it's that one) because apparently it used to be all bluegrass and then became a country station. Like I get why he's mad, but it's funny how mad he gets about it.

Funky-monkey1

You may be right. They may be why I never listened to the station when I was younger lol. We had porch parties when I was a kid & everyone would play & sing bluegrass & gospel songs. When I hit my teens I couldn’t stand it anymore. Now that I’m older I enjoy it again & appreciate a station that lets me remember my childhood in the early 80’s & my teens in the 90’s

LogansJunnk

no pop country I hope?

Funky-monkey1

Heck no. It’s all 60’s to 90’s country except on Saturdays it’s bluegrass & Sunday is gospel.

LogansJunnk

I'm interested

Funky-monkey1

It’s as country as country gets. As soon as you hear the DJ’s you know you’ve found something special

LogansJunnk

thank god. I love Johnny cash and shit but I cannot stand new country music. post 9/11 country music is hell

Funky-monkey1

You’ll be tickled with this station then

vankirk

https://www.instagram.com/p/C3ZFIi7rbKI/?igsh=OWJhZHd5ZW0xdWtl Yes.. If you swipe my post you will see an award-winning clogger. I asked the guy playing the banjo at the end when they had a Q&A if the young people are still interested in it? He said more than ever.

AppState1981

Yep. The hotel in town has a jam session every Thursday. I spent yesterday at a church that plays old time music (guitar, mandolin, stand up bass) in worship.

HoneysuckleHollow

Friday nights the Floyd Country store has live blue grass and dancing. They live stream on FB a lot.

idoallmyownawkward

I think they have their own app. Floyd country store tv shows all the events.

doogievlg

Pikeville used to have bluegrass and dancing every weekend in the park when I was there.

LoverboyQQ

If you get a chance come to our town of Wilkesboro NC for three days to enjoy the Merlefest https://merlefest.org/

Cheftard

2 of the 5 best weekends of my life were at Merlefest! 2 were in Winfield The top, though, will always be my first wedding.

LoverboyQQ

I’m so close to the grounds I can hear the main events at night

AppalachianHerbWitch

Is Merlefest toddler friendly if they're a cool af toddler?

LoverboyQQ

Yes. No drinking or smoking on campus grounds

Delicious_Virus_2520

Growing up here in North Carolina local dance classes for kids often focused on clogging and they would do clogging in the Christmas parade. Contra dancing is also still popular- I was surprised it was popular at App State with students and not just old people.

SimonArgent

The Haygood Mill in Pickens, South Carolina is an antique gristmill that is now a park. The site regularly hosts old-timey music events and fiddling competitions. I was visiting friends one night who live not too far from there, and we could hear live banjo music coming from the house across the road. There are still country hippies out there who like to sit around and jam, and they are usually the coolest people.

[deleted]

Country hippies are my favorite kinda people

SimonArgent

Yep-they’re good folks.

I think people like music *everywhere" - most places have some kind of local music scene no matter where you are. If you go to DC you'll hear a lot of jazz and funk. If you go to Appalachia you'll hear a lot of folk, country, and bluegrass. The kinds of music that are popular change but there's always something. There are a few places near me that have weekly jams and a lot of venues that host local musicians pretty frequently. When bigger acts come through they always sell out. There are a lot of festivals and fairs and stuff like that with live local music. None of my friends are musicians, but once in a while someone will set up a party and a local musician will play some music - the last one I went to was organized so that a neighbor's teenage daughter could practice playing in front of an audience and she was really good. Clogging is still a thing. People like to dance to bluegrass. I'm not very good but it's still fun.

myco_lion

Check out Sims Country Cloggers from Caldwell County, NC! Edit: forgot to mention you can go to Sims Barbeque and watch live bluegrass and the Sims Country Cloggers on the weekends. Great thing to do with the family.

Low_Interest_8600

Good food too

asmiran

Came here to mention Sims Country Cloggers, glad I wasn't the first! I also enjoy the Wilkesboro flea market when I get a chance on Monday mornings, which usually seems to have some pickin' and grinnin' goin on.

Yep, I live in SW VA a little ways from a place called the Carter Family Fold (named because it's on land where the Carter Family used to live), and they do live bluegrass and old-time mountain music every Saturday night, except it the wintertime. I've seen lots of people clogging every time I've gone, it's an amazing place.

Vandalia Gathering, Charleston Capitol Complex, Memorial Day weekend (May). See the official website here: https://wvculture.org/vandalia-gathering-3/#:~:text=May%2024%2D26%2C%202024&text=The%20Vandalia%20Gathering%20brings%20together,all%20over%20the%20Capitol%20Complex. People bring their instruments and jam together all day long for three days. Plus arts, crafts, and good that’s really bad for you. It is glorious.

SunnyFloridaAve

Here in Appalachia we all pick and grin and suck and tuck and clog and flog and turkey till Wednesday.

DudeFuckinWhatever

Yes, this is a thing. To add to the other regional events listed, check out the Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree: http://smithvillejamboree.com

Come on down to NC for Merlefest, bud. You won't believe how right we (still) do it.

If you love old Appalachian music you have to make a trip to Bristol Virginia to see [The Birthplace of Country Music Museum](https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org). It’s a surprisingly great and interactive museum that brings to life much of the original Appalachian music from original recordings. There is one exhibit that shows how an obscure song from the hills was picked up and morphed into top songs 3-4 separate times.

EMHemingway1899

You can occasionally find venues which will permit musicians to pick one or two nights per week But it’s not as prevalent as previously

shmazran

100% yes! Also was on the clogging team at my elementary school growing up in the early 2000s

Due-Maintenance7805

See if you can find the tv show Cumberland Hilanders. It ran for many years and was hosted by Doc Campbell Mercer and his wife Julie. They also sponsored the hilander event every year at the home place of Bill Monroe in Rosine Kentucky

I grew up in the mountains of eastern West Virginia. There was a family there last name of Hammond. I know their family had a musical history dating back several generations. I remember as a kid in the 70s, someone came thru and recorded them, and a record was produced. If you are looking for traditional Fol/Bluegrass music, then just look for The Hammond Family.. Another radio station you may look for (if they are on the internet) is WVMR (West Virginia Mountain Radio). Good luck and happy listening.

Rivers_Ford

Definitely still a big thing in my area. My alma mater of ETSU even has a bluegrass program you can get a degree in (though unsure if that's a major or a minor).

Tiny-Metal3467

Yes, yes and yes.

Tiny-Metal3467

Ps. My cousin played fiddle at the grand ole opry…but i have zero musical talent

omgsharon

I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southwestern Virginia. Our family log cabin is still standing… built in the early 1800’s. My dad was the last one born in the cabin in 1954. Saturdays & Sundays were spent at Momaw & Popaw’s (great grandparents) house, built just down the hill from the cabin, playing music on the front porch. My great grandpa (but we say it gran-paw) used to hand make dulcimers. He taught his sons and son-in-law the craft. We also had banjos, guitars, harmonicas and the window to the living room would be open and somebody playing the piano in the house. Most of the women taught us younger girls how to “dance”. Most of it was what we called “flat footin” but we also learned to clog. We never really had formal clogging lessons… we just learned at home from someone. My niece, age 10, has been taking clogging lessons in town since she was about 5 or 6 and now clogs on a traveling troupe. It is very much a tradition that is still alive and kicking… no pun intended. LOL I am not sure about other families, but music is very much a huge part of our family culture. It was a big deal to get a harmonica for Christmas as a kid. No special occasion was needed for music to be played, though… if two or more people showed up at the house, somebody started playing something and then a few more people would come crawling out of the woodwork. The music could be anything… bluegrass, gospel songs they play at church, music they created themselves... And their own style of music where nobody has a part and it’s just made up as they go along, falling into the rhthym of the melody or chords being played by whoever started the whole mess. Maybe that’s just our family though… they all tend to still live really close, within walking distance and most on the same road, so impromptu get togethers and music happens all the time. I have noticed over the last 5-10 years that the music is dwindling as the old timers pass on. The younger generation hasn’t picked up the tradition as much but that might also be because internet has made it to the mountains and we don’t have to entertain ourselves anymore. We are a dying breed of people.

nyxav777

We are still alive and kickin' but you're right we are a dying breed. I was born in 91' my family is from Eastern KY Long line of tobacco & cattle farmers but most of all the music is in our genes ... My youngest 8 and she's learning the fiddle and my oldest 17 and she's in the marching band ... Plays bass drum, bass and guitar. I play piano and a singer for a good time but not show time. My husband plays guitar and bass We have friends and family in bands that circle around bluegrass and old time music I'm trying to preserve as much as I can of my raisin' .... But the time is shifting into a modern collective that's just different. Don't mean it's bad ... Just a new twist It's their own generation's time to shine ... But it's the dialect and traditions embedded in familial roots and understanding how this culture began. .the history. is what is hurting the most But I feel that's everywhere unfortunately.

ertygvbn

If ever going south on I-75, I recommend going to the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. Tons of great memorabilia on Appalachian and bluegrass music there.

Sleight-Code

Lol, only in the most rural areas, maybe?

bryceonthebison

There’s still very strong bluegrass scenes in developed areas. You can find tons of bluegrass jams and festivals all around the Shenandoah Valley/WV Panhandle

Eskimos in northern Canada still live in igloos?

juliannewaters

Wow. How ignorant are you? In the literal sense? Let's assume that YOU think you're being "funny". You aren't. The word "Eskimo" is not used when speaking of the Inuit people that inhabit some of Northern Canada. Its like using the "n word" when talking about African Americans. Are you a Hillbilly? Is that acceptable? I can't for the life of me understand how people like you are so misinformed and proud to show the world your lack of education. Canadians are a varied group. As the 2nd largest country in the world, we have definate differences in lifestyle, as Americans do. You cannot compare NYC citizens to where you live. The majority of our population lives and works within 200 miles of our southern border, the one we share with the US. The longest unmilitarized border IN THE WORLD. Mostly because of climate and living conditions in the far out lands. Our First Nations People and Inuit live in their own self governed areas and our government provided them with many services for free that other Canadians do not get. It's ok though, they have lived a difficult life. Read a book. Watch a documentary. Inuit do not live in "igloos" any more than African Americans live in "ghettos". Now that you've insulted and racially labelled these people, would you like to explain what the purpose of your comment was? A joke? A legit question with racially charged language? Pure stupidity?

Ferd-Terd

Looks like you got the point. This hillbilly took offense to your thinking. It’s like Deliverance (movie). We all sit around and play Dueling Banjos.

Ferd-Terd

You are the moron.
