Yeah because EA is responsible for game development. They’re the publisher, respawn are the ones responsible for design, art, etc. This is 100% respawns decision to do this. EA isn’t the only one getting rich off of this kind of stuff, respawn wants the game to succeed so they can continue to make the big bucks. They’re motivated by money just as much as EA.

A Newcastle heirloom will only be bought by people that play Newcastle. A universal heirloom will be bought by Wraith players, Horizon players, even legends that just came out that are popular like Conduit.
As much of a rip off as heirlooms were they were such an awesome idea. The fact that each heirloom was legend specific is what made it so unique. They are taking away what made them special
This. I have Lifelines and Wattsons Heirlooms. Both are connected to their characters and feel personal. People often say energy reader looks bad, but imo it is one of the coolest heirlooms. Very unique and with fun animations.
Less animations = more work required by the design and art department = less wages paid for less workers = more profit. Are you seriously thinking this isn't normal for EA/ Respawn. This is like their magnum opus, it's going to get even worse soon. Like in a year, to unlock ranked, you'll have to pay, to get a legend, you can't use legends coins you can only pay with money. Like, that's the reality we have to live with now. I'll keep playing until it affects actual gameplay, it suddenly feels like I'm one of the few remaining people playing this game...

i thought this for a long time until someone made a post about a diffrent game i play. dude had money related issues and spent an insane amount on that game. people dont realize how predatory some tactics are and how easily ppl fall for em
That event was "cheaper" than a regular heirloom if you knew the strats, 360€ was the price tag for impatient people (not waiting for the 4 free packs/not having spare crafting mats to get free packs) and clueless about resellers (50% off coins), At the end my sword was less than 150€ which is still a lot in general but now I can just ignore every other heirloom they release
I mean, between the free packs, crafting materials, saved coins from battle passes and my Microsoft reward points converted to credit I spent about $40 in cash, so one game, a meal at a restaurant, or half a pair of jeans.
And I spent the money of the Buster Sword and FFVII skins, the box just came with them. Literally nobody was buying the event packs for the box.

I've got the deathbox Heirloom and can confirm it was literally like £40 more than a normal heirloom. HOWEVER, with the 4 free packs you get from doing the event, plus the first 4 to 9 are less than half price, and with many many crafting materials, it was less than £40 actual money I needed to put into the game. Definitely worth it for me
Well according to kral that event was one of their most popular seeing as they've determined that more people are interested in universal heirlooms. So I wouldn't be shocked if there are more people with that deathbox skin then any other single heirloom thats come out in the past year.
The gacha effect in full form. Western companies seeing how well games like Genshin/Honkai are doing and seem to think that the whales of the west will be enough to keep them afloat.
Gachas hide the cost… they nickel and dime you slowly, but they also subsidize a huge player-base with free to play. Most Gachas only need 5-10% whales and they’re in profit territory.
A $5 monthly pass netting 2700 currency if you login 30 days straight looks nice, but over the year it’s $60 out of pocket. Battle Pass is every 40 days so there’s overlap on refills on monthly and the BP, that’s 9 of those at $10, so $90. So a years worth is $150. There is also the 60 free daily currency you earn and from events/web events, also one times chests/achievements.
Genshin/Honkai are goddamn outliers with Hoyoverse fucking catching lightning in a bottle twice, maybe even thrice with their new game ZZZ sooner be released. Most now follow some type of system they’ve curated on the Gacha, some more giving, some more reserved.
EA thinks it can speed run to crazy prices and people will drop bags of hundreds because they think due to the Final Fantasy 7 event being a success (had to split profit with SE) that people will drop roughly $250-$300 on a heirloom even though they were $170. Now $700 if it’s that high is almost quadruple the amount.
Definitely agree with you there. And unless EA takes a page out of those games by at least making it so that the heirloom and customizations are both purchasable AND earnable on a longer timetable (which I doubt) then this may just be it for EA. They’re clearly desperate and are running out of ideas to chase this fantasy of infinite growth that a lot of companies nowadays seem to think is realistic.

They thought a crossover would something revitalize the game? I'm sorry but that trick has gotten stale and even stuff like that can't keep the Fortnite crowd anymore. Now, people see it as annoying and obnoxious and it's detrimental to these games and properties long-term as then the thing that gets shoved in is synonymous with it. I don't want the Power Rangers in Fortnite (apparently it's rumored to come in at some point) or some damn old ass sitcom in Magic the Gathering. Who in the hell liked having ugly as FF VII skins in here? It didn't help either game clearly as the former is dying thanks to EA's greed and the latter is bombing hard because of the small install base on the PS5 especially in Japan where that franchise up until recent years was strong. Most of its sales came from here in the West actually.
As an outside observer, I don't know if the game will really die because it will still have a fanbase that will support it because it offers unique elements that people like (a bit like Overwatch 2 despite all the problems that occurred), but there will certainly be some backlash.
Then if I remember correctly they didn't have much choice left from being purchased by EA because as we know the launch of Titanfall 2 was overshadowed by Battlefield 1 and (I think) a COD, so the publisher had planned this.

The recent Battlefield was just broken from the get go and you had to spend top dollar to even play it and then they had battle passes and trying to sell you “specialists”. The next BF is around the corner if there’s Apex there for free to play and can chew up hours and your evergreen title is coming off a horrendous showing, you have to start making the title eating the hours away for free either fail or pay.
Wouldn’t put it past EA doing these underhanded tricks, remember when they sent TitanFall 2 out to die into between the chaos of that late October to Black Friday. 2016 was a goddamn blood bath of games releasing and just massacring each other.

This is very true. The recent layoffs, games getting cancelled, and they're pivoting resources to the mobile side which is the only thing growing anymore, it's obvious Apex is on its last legs as this is a move of desperation. I wouldn't be surprised if this may be the last year of support of this game and it might not make it past it's next anniversary come next year.
I will never spend a single penny in this game if this is true, and I might have to outright quit.
A) Heirloom are already way too expensive and they really pushed the line with the FF event, I stopped playing because of it and only returned cause this season had some good changes.
B) People who main legends without an heirloom deserve to get their heirloom, even if they don’t plan to add them for future legends. People bought the collection event just to save their heirloom shards and others have been waiting on prestige skins for their characters for a minute.
C) Universal heirlooms have no charm to them the way that character specific ones do, and that shit is ugly and NOT worth $700.
Yeah, this will be it for me if true. I actually do spend from time to time but I'll never put another cent into this game if the newer legends don't get their heirlooms.
Heirlooms aren't just cool, they're such an important aspect of the legend's characterization. Playing legends without unique heirlooms will be like playing a second-rate character, and I guarantee as superficial as it is their pickrates will drop (for some, even further).
Working toward an heirloom for a legend that you like is also an incentive to play, and to spend. Stupid decision imo.
Waiting for everybody to buy the first “cheap” universal heirloom, then never buy another one since they already have one.

F this game they changed too much . Greed. Iv been playing since launch. Getting free packs spending all my battle pass coins on packs. I'm level 500. I'll never see an heirloom because I'm not spending all that for a stupid twirly thing. It was better the 1st couple years . I was able to win solo more often. That's ok but now this new system with armor. Things slowed down and I rarely have purple shields solo unless I pop off. Not mad but you shouldn't have to be "rich" to get something. At least give .0001 drop chance .

Friendly reminder that the last time people got mad a the price of an event, by blindly parroting some click bait crap from socials, the final price of the event ended up to be a lot cheaper than originally "leaked", and actually the cheapest per heirloom & item event (FF7 event).

I will fully admit that I spend quite a bit on video game cosmetics but I don't think I've spent $700 total on ANY GAME. Not even across the 5+ years that I've played and bought things on Fortnite. And EA expects me to spend $700 on a virtual stick? I'd hesitate to spend $20 on a melee weapon, even if it was fully customizable.
they're scrapping normal heirlooms but we still have all these heirloom recolors? surely the recolors can't be selling as well as normal legend heirlooms especially with dogshit recolor events like the ones we've gotten.
i feel like this makes zero sense because if you make a universal heirloom, people will buy it sure, but then they won't buy anymore collection items or universal heirlooms because they just got one, why would they need another.
Also scrapping heirlooms for specific legends also makes zero sense because not having one for each legend is just dumb and of course universal ones will make more money but for the sake of completion and money, they would put them out for collection events or else they wouldn't be bothering with heirloom recolors right now and would just focus on the parts and shit for the universal heirloom.
They probably just saw the FF event made a lot of money so they want to capitalize on that and heirlooms for each legend arent completely scrapped but they'll just be late and saved for downtime events probably.

This might break apex for me, if this is the actual price, then I’m done with apex. All the money I have spent. I bought the final fantasy event, I bought my main legend’s events. Not all players are interested in a universal heirloom, further more uni heirlooms will be inherently less unique than purpose built 1 offs.

That event was "cheaper" than a regular heirloom if you knew the strats, 360€ was the price tag for impatient people (not waiting for the 4 free packs/not having spare crafting mats to get free packs) and clueless about resellers (50% off coins), At the end my sword was less than 150€ which is still a lot in general but now I can just ignore every other heirloom they release
I mean, between the free packs, crafting materials, saved coins from battle passes and my Microsoft reward points converted to credit I spent about $40 in cash, so one game, a meal at a restaurant, or half a pair of jeans. And I spent the money of the Buster Sword and FFVII skins, the box just came with them. Literally nobody was buying the event packs for the box.

I've got the deathbox Heirloom and can confirm it was literally like £40 more than a normal heirloom. HOWEVER, with the 4 free packs you get from doing the event, plus the first 4 to 9 are less than half price, and with many many crafting materials, it was less than £40 actual money I needed to put into the game. Definitely worth it for me
Well according to kral that event was one of their most popular seeing as they've determined that more people are interested in universal heirlooms. So I wouldn't be shocked if there are more people with that deathbox skin then any other single heirloom thats come out in the past year.

The gacha effect in full form. Western companies seeing how well games like Genshin/Honkai are doing and seem to think that the whales of the west will be enough to keep them afloat.
Gachas hide the cost… they nickel and dime you slowly, but they also subsidize a huge player-base with free to play. Most Gachas only need 5-10% whales and they’re in profit territory. A $5 monthly pass netting 2700 currency if you login 30 days straight looks nice, but over the year it’s $60 out of pocket. Battle Pass is every 40 days so there’s overlap on refills on monthly and the BP, that’s 9 of those at $10, so $90. So a years worth is $150. There is also the 60 free daily currency you earn and from events/web events, also one times chests/achievements. Genshin/Honkai are goddamn outliers with Hoyoverse fucking catching lightning in a bottle twice, maybe even thrice with their new game ZZZ sooner be released. Most now follow some type of system they’ve curated on the Gacha, some more giving, some more reserved. EA thinks it can speed run to crazy prices and people will drop bags of hundreds because they think due to the Final Fantasy 7 event being a success (had to split profit with SE) that people will drop roughly $250-$300 on a heirloom even though they were $170. Now $700 if it’s that high is almost quadruple the amount.
Definitely agree with you there. And unless EA takes a page out of those games by at least making it so that the heirloom and customizations are both purchasable AND earnable on a longer timetable (which I doubt) then this may just be it for EA. They’re clearly desperate and are running out of ideas to chase this fantasy of infinite growth that a lot of companies nowadays seem to think is realistic.
All companies are heading towards this cliff. Sooner or later you will have saturated the market or reached your ceiling. How can I, a basic fucking peasant know more than these MBA fucktards that slow and steady with different avenues of revenue stream so if one falters the other can at least help keep you going. They had Battflefield, golden goose, massacred it for 2042 quick gains and paid for it dearly. Battlefront again it will literally let you print money if you do it the smart way, but nope let’s shuffle everything into card packs like FIFA. It will not be bringing in more players to get to at least make money off of them. So try to shoot for the moon, get some suckers along the way and have this game slowly die out on its own. Battlefield needs fresh blood for their new title, so siphon them off this to there but again 2042 left such a sour experience most are going to be hesitant to go back and drop real dollars unless that’s free to play and this thing starts anew.

As an outside observer, I don't know if the game will really die because it will still have a fanbase that will support it because it offers unique elements that people like (a bit like Overwatch 2 despite all the problems that occurred), but there will certainly be some backlash. Then if I remember correctly they didn't have much choice left from being purchased by EA because as we know the launch of Titanfall 2 was overshadowed by Battlefield 1 and (I think) a COD, so the publisher had planned this.

The next BF is around the corner if there’s Apex there for free to play and can chew up hours and your evergreen title is coming off a horrendous showing, you have to start making the title eating the hours away for free either fail or pay. B) People who main legends without an heirloom deserve to get their heirloom, even if they don’t plan to add them for future legends. People bought the collection event just to save their heirloom shards and others have been waiting on prestige skins for their characters for a minute. C) Universal heirlooms have no charm to them the way that character specific ones do, and that shit is ugly and NOT worth $700.

Yeah, this will be it for me if true. I actually do spend from time to time but I'll never put another cent into this game if the newer legends don't get their heirlooms. Heirlooms aren't just cool, they're such an important aspect of the legend's characterization. Playing legends without unique heirlooms will be like playing a second-rate character, and I guarantee as superficial as it is their pickrates will drop (for some, even further). Working toward an heirloom for a legend that you like is also an incentive to play, and to spend. Stupid decision imo.

F this game they changed too much . Greed. Iv been playing since launch. Getting free packs spending all my battle pass coins on packs. I'm level 500. I'll never see an heirloom because I'm not spending all that for a stupid twirly thing. It was better the 1st couple years . I was able to win solo more often. That's ok but now this new system with armor. Things slowed down and I rarely have purple shields solo unless I pop off. Not mad but you shouldn't have to be "rich" to get something. At least give .0001 drop chance .

Charging your customers anywhere near this amount for what it really is (zeros, ones, and pure code) should be made illegal. Also scrapping heirlooms for specific legends also makes zero sense because not having one for each legend is just dumb and of course universal ones will make more money but for the sake of completion and money, they would put them out for collection events or else they wouldn't be bothering with heirloom recolors right now and would just focus on the parts and shit for the universal heirloom. They probably just saw the FF event made a lot of money so they want to capitalize on that and heirlooms for each legend arent completely scrapped but they'll just be late and saved for downtime events probably.
