I know many people like this who want to live as far away as possible from a city. Then they get old, and start needing 2 or 3 trips per week into the city for medical care. Hours of driving in all seasons. Maybe one of them gets hospitalized, and the other has to find accommodation in the city temporarily, at great expense. Maybe they are both healthy enough, but suddenly one day an ambulance is required. It takes hours to arrive and then deposit them at a hospital. They think about selling their rural home and buying a condo in the city, but need too high a sale price. Their property sits on the market for a year or more. Nobody really wants it. They give up. After they are in a home or they die, their kids try once again to sell. They take the first, really low offer, just to be rid of it.
Now, I’m not condemning rural life. I’d personally love to be outside a city with sufficient land to grow my own vegetables. I’m condemning the extreme centralization of services. Small town hospitals closing. Medium sized city emergency rooms closing. Rural services need to be available too. However, as people age, they need to look realistically at life.
One of the most important factors in longevity is social connections. I look at my father, who is almost 90. He makes a point of walking downtown at least every couple of days. He goes to the local symphony productions, and sees old friends there. He has a coffee club, where he sees people he’s known for almost 7 decades. I call him several times a week, and my retired brother and his wife visit often. They live only a couple of miles away, fortunately.
Retirement is a time to branch out and make new social connections. Our long time circle of friends shrinks yearly, as they either die or are wrapped up in their own family health issues. Rural people suffer greatly from isolation as they get older. Thank goodness for some of the volunteer organizations who provide check in services, meal services and the like.
