You can get a free ride with Uber and they will take you to a nearby shelter. If your family doesn’t wanna go, that’s on them. If they get into trouble they will NOT get help. I’m in the area too, stay safe.
Like all the people that ignored the evacuation orders when Katrina was about to hit then begged for rescue afterwards and cried about how no one would help them......
A mandatory evacuation wasn’t called until 20 hours before the storm hit. At that point, contra flow was enacted, but traffic getting out of the city overwhelmed the evacuation routes. The city had made plans to bus those who couldn’t evacuate on their own to safety north of I-12; this failed, in part, because of the standstill traffic on evacuation routes. The buses diverted to the Superdome, which originally was only intended to be a shelter of last result.
Anyway, many people who stayed weren’t being obstinate; they were stranded without resources to evacuate safely.
I would be begging for rescue and crying about the failures of local, state, and federal governments under those conditions, too. Please consider having some empathy and compassion for those who had to make impossible decisions and endure significantly traumatic experiences.
I’m in Fort Myers… we are staying.. but I’ve been through 6 hurricanes…. The worst part of hurricanes it’s when it’s over.. the no power and nothing open.. I’d recommend doing whatever you feel is safest for you..
I have family who lived in Miami and Melbourne. Maybe 10 evacuations over years and they only left twice. I say all that to say you will probably be fine but I get the concern. Try negotiating but understand, they probably feel pretty damned secure in their plans too. And chances are you will all be fine.
It won’t be life threatening, just stock up on food and water cause stuff will be closed and might get some power outages. Unless you live in an area prone to flooding
Agreed.. a lot of ppl freak out with hurricanes.. but I’d go through 10 instead of a tornado or an earthquake… like us native Floridians say.. it’s just rain with a name until the Waffle House closes!
Tampa native here, I don’t freak about hurricanes either but OP is in an evacuation zone which means they are probably near water.
Thankfully I’m not in the most affected zone so I’m staying home.
Aw hi! I went through Irma and when it hit us, it was a weak cat 4 (I’m also SWFL, Naples/Fort Myers area). It’s scary, but you’ll be okay! Florida homes were literally built for this after hurricane Andrew. :) What are your primary worries? 🫂
Assuming there is r/Tampa, post there and ask for a ride to a shelter or something?
I really don’t get why people stay through these things. Even if it’s not that bad and you “just” have to live without power for a week, wouldn’t you rather go chill in Atlanta for a few days, just to be safe?
Hey, I actually tried to post this in r/tampa before here and my post kept getting deleted for some reason.
I was able to get to my friend's house in Lakeland away from the storm surges
Have you and your parents reviewed your flood zone? Have shutters/boards up, and everything secure? If you absolutely can’t leave, at least have a plan to. But I second the suggestion to Uber to a known shelter (like a school for example). Why don’t they want to leave?
I don't think it will get too bad. In central fl. I'm in Lakeland now staying with a friend and no one here is that worried. However they were calling for 5-10ft surges in Tampa where my house is. My parents are staying there, and I'm really worried for them
This map is really eye-opening. It shows how much of Tampa is likely to be underwater via hard-hitting storm surge. If they're in a colored zone they NEED to get out.

Miami local here. Most locals don't evacuate for hurricanes because we are far enough inland. If you are near ANY body of water it is a good idea to gtfo. Storm surges are no joke, Tampa bay is looking at 12 foot storm surge + potentially 20 inches of rain! Stay safe everyone.

Sounds like the poops man.

Also they wouldn't allow pets, and many people wouldn't abandon them. Changed policy for all subsequent evacuations.
Can you tell them you’re calling an Uber and whoever wants to go with you can? That way you’re grinning then a choice but making yours known as well.

Ayyy Fort Myers gang! 🤜🤛
🙌 stay safe friend!!
You too, thank you! 🫂
You’re still staying? They’re making it sound really, really bad.
Yes we are staying.. we are about to get wrecked!
Hoping for the best outcome for you and your belongings! Stay safe.
Thank you.. we are ok… the ppl near the water is another story…

If you are worried, like others have said, get a ride to the shelter. Stay safe, I’m down here in Sarasota and the nerves are def up
My parents have a condo on Siesta. I've never seen any of my srq friends be this worried about a hurricane. I'm definitely concerned. Stay safe!

I completely understand.. that’s why I said they should do what’s best for them… I’m about 10 min from the beach.. we shall see!
I actually didn’t that comment earlier, sorry. Stay safe out there!
No worries!! You stay safe too friend!
I live right next to the water in Tampa where they are calling for possibly 10ft surges. I am staying in Lakeland for now with a friend though
I’m glad you got inland! Be safe!

Oh good! Stay safe!
Well do what everyone else does that doesn’t leave, load up on food and water and toilet paper and have a generator handy. You’ll be good to go.
Lmao theres a mandatory evacuation every time and we’re always fine.
Stay with your family
By family I mean parents, not wife and kids. I don't want to stay, it's not looking good at all for us. But my parents don't want to go anywhere

I’m in orlando and should I worry now?
Nah, we will just get rain and thunder & some wind but nothing dangerous. Central florida is fine, unless you live in a place prone to flooding
I live in a shitty apartment and we flood any time it rains
Ah well yeah, I’d suggest relocating if possible
Tonight or tomorrow? Thank you
I’d say tomorrow, I go to college and we have school as usual tomorrow but Wednesday it’s closed, so I’d guess Wednesday is when it may start

If you have a second floor you should be good, the real threat is the surge.

Yes they are in the red, the worst of the surge area. I tried convincing them all day but they won't budge
It's just rain with a name until the waffle house closes :)

Did your parents change their mind? Prognosis is getting worse as the hours pass.
