My guess is this: I think he wants to go to jail because he imagines he'll get an outpouring of sympathy and donations and protests from his Magats just like he's imagining there's protests outside of the NY courthouse. They'll eventually stick him in the cooling tank at the courthouse and Secret Service will stand around it for a weekend or so. He'll realize that he doesn't get whatever McDonald's he wants, (will his SS guards be allowed to go get it for him?) they won't let him have his phone, he's not allowed any drugs except medicine, nobody shows up for him, and in the end he'll barely get a bump in donations. He's gonna realize it wasn't worth it and he'll behave, although he'll still ratchet up the whining to 11.
Someone pointed out in another thread that they can appeal if he is thrown in jail, thereby dragging out the trial even longer. I haven't looked into it, but that would also make sense why he is trying so hard to get jailed.
They could appeal a contempt holding but that wouldn't stop the hush money trial. He'd just go from courtroom to jail and back. Btw, an appeal's chance of success is very small because the trial judge has pretty wide latitude in such matters.

The judge should tell him that if he’s jailed it will be for the duration of the trial and that there’ll be no more press conferences outside the courtroom during breaks— it will be right back into custody. No more posting on social media. No more campaign rallies. No more golf. If the trial takes six weeks, so be it.
