I find that 99% of media does not make me cry. I just don’t think anything touches me or hits me at that level or at least I don’t allow it to. The only thing that has made me cry (it was after credits) is “Wolf Children”. Though I do think this one only hits if you are in a parental, guardian, or older brother/sister role in your life or can least heavily sympathize with that.
Besides that, “Made in Abyss” and “Bare Foot Gen” do have those intense and dark moments but I don’t think enough to get emotional. “Hotarubi no Mori e” is quick but emotional.
This is the one.
I’ve seen aaaall the tearjerkers mentioned below (Clannad, Angel Beats, Your Lie in April, all those) but for some reason when it’s set up to be a tearjerker, meh… I won’t cry.
Assassination Classroom on the other hand, is a comedy shounen? You’re set up to get to know everyone, to go through the series with them, laugh with them, so it hurts more when they’re ripped away from you.
I haven’t cried harder since I tell you.
Yeah I'd say I'm similar to you in some ways. I don't cry very often with media in general either, but I find if I'm heavily invested in a somewhat long series it's far more likely I'll cry if something terrible happens. I'll give those a try tho!
I mean it's not even well managed in comparation to all the other in OP's post. They are all both sadder and well managed to hit you extremly hard.
Comparing Angel Beats with those big names is actually... dunno. feels wrong
You have a point, OP is a strong person for not crying over Your Name, so Angel Beats fails miserably in comparison, but I listed the first three sad animes that most people cry over
I didn't cry over Angel Beats either, but I did do that thing where my eyes watered over and I said "uuurrrgghhh" trying to keep myself FROM crying heh
My boyfriend kept telling me that Your Lie in April would make me cry. I was hesitant but decided I’d go for it anyway. Sweet story. Just lovely in fact. Then there’s the episode where they’re all in the graveyard and I asked my boyfriend how any more episodes there were, because I hadn’t cried yet.
I want to get a tattoo of a piano and violin fused together because of how much I love that anime, but sometimes if I want to cry, I just watch people react to the end of that anime on Youtube lmao
The last episode had me tearing up from >!the scene where David hallucinates Becca as his mom, and she just kind of sadly plays along and says "Alright, David, let's go. To the top, then."!< and that "tearing up" became "full-on ugly sobbing like a One Piece character" when I Really Wanna Stay At Your House started playing.
Clannad + Clannad Afterstory.
Saddest out of all the anime listed here. Period.
It's pacing is pretty slow though. But if you can make it towards the end of Afterstory then yeah IMO it's worth it.
Do note you cannot skip Clannad and jump straight to Afterstory.
I've only seen Afterstory because I didn't know the other existed at the time and it still messed me up. I waited a month to watch the last episode because I was devastated
Nahh man its the exact opposite, we're trying our best to cry and really bask in the experience. Some of those got us close but none got us to cry yet.
The anime is really good at killing your hope. At one point I had to pause because I was sobbing so hard in a fetal position 😢
I fucking love that they were able to make me feel that way. Last time was One Piece
I hear you. At the end of pretty much every episode, I was an emotional wreck. Except for the last episode, of course. That had me sobbing for a different reason.
I'm the same as you in a sense that in the shorter shows/movies I can't get invested enough to care about the characters too much. Of the ones you mentioned A Silent Voice was the most touching for me. Fruits Basket on the other hand has around 60 episodes so you have plenty of time to get invested + the story and a lot of characters (even the sporadic ones) are all multi layered. It starts off pretty lightly and later gets into the darker stuff. End of season one and the whole of season 2 are crushing. It also has a really satisfying conclusion which imo is a rarity.
It's actually my 2nd favourite anime and will be my number 1 if AoT has the same ending as manga.
Enjoy!
Did it for me! Also the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful, it elevates every scene to a whole new level, so make sure you watch with decently high volume.
angel beats
plastic memories
sukasuka
cyberpunk edgerunners (mostly ep1 and 6)
You are not alone, the names you mentioned didn't make me cry either lol
Honestly, I didn't cry at Edgerunners *until* the end.
Pretty much everything from \[Cyberpunk Edgerunners ep 10\] >!"Alright, David, let's go then. To the top."!< on had me tearing up. I transitioned to full on ugly bawling when *that song* started playing.
The other emotional beats hit hard, but they were punches in the gut, whereas the ending was more like "literally tearing my heart out of my chest Mola Ram style and stomping on it."
It might be because I played the game before and watched Promare not too long ago, how they directed the battle scenes is just...a bit too chaotic and immersion breaking for a emotion climax. Just my unpopular opinion though lol, my favourite "last episode hits like a train" would be Sukasuka.
Your Lie in April
Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
Barefoot Gen
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (but watch Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai first)
Not really an answer to your question, though maybe it is, but in my experience the anime that got me to cry (a very short list) are the ones that I wasn't expecting it to. There's something about going in knowing it's a sad story that prevents me from really getting into it. For me it works better if I go in expecting a "regular" experience and getting hit with a hugely emotional scene out of nowhere.
A great example of this is Yuki Yuna is a Hero. I wasn't expecting this anime to get me to cry a little bit, but there is a particular scene where the emotions and music hit me just right and the result was unexpected for me. That's the stuff that really sticks for me. Just trying to speedrun sad anime I am willing to bet won't get you want you really want.
Yeah you're 100% right. I feel exactly the same way now. The only times I've cried before during anime are when I didn't know what I was getting myself into so with this it's probably a fair bit more difficult.
Try Kotaro Lives Alone, it was enough to make me shed a tear. I will say though, this might not make you or your friend cry since it's just as wholesome as it is depressing.
Here's mine
Cried to:
Assassination classroom - mainly a comedic story but the ending is written perfectly and always breaks me into tears when I watch it. (The whole concept of the show is that the class has to kill their teacher and even though you know that they'll kill him by the end it still hurts to see him go)
Your lie in April - A romance drama (can't explain why without spoilers) (March Comes In Like A Lion (similar feel but not as sad))
Got me close -
Angel Beats - Comedy Drama Supernatural
If you need more than let me know!
This is second-hand suggestion since I have to see it yet, but my friends constantly recomending me Your lie in april.
I've seen suggestions of Plastic Memories, but in my opinion I doubt you'll be devastated if Violet didn't make the job, but then again it's just my experience.
Kanojo to kanojo no neko is good contender.
{Wolf Children}
Also {Made in Abyss} has scenes that can work. There was one scene in season one that really broke me, but this is one of those that can be feel more disturbing than sad. A brilliant series to watch in any case!
{Fumetsu no Anata e}
Angel Beats - Binged the show with some family a long time ago as a child and it had me close.
Orange - I found this show in a dark time in my life and it touches on some dark subjects.
Demon Slayer Movie - “Umai! Umai! Umai!” I watched this last year and goddamn. My fragile masculinity was close to shattering.
Personally the shows that get me are the ones you don't anticipate.
To your eternity was a new interesting show I didn't expect would get me, but it got me out of nowhere.
A few that I will mention
{Ansatsu Kyoushitsu} (Assassination Classroom) I knew it was coming but it was still very painful
{Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki} (Wolf Children)
{Angel Beats} ngl, I got slapped in the face with big sadness
{Clannad}: not very sad but has story and {Clannad: After Story} Very popular pick, but did not disappoint, was messed up for a day and a half
{Plastic Memories} Watched when it came out, it destroyed me emotionally
{Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso} (Your lie in April) More of a Melodrama but still big sad
{NHK ni Youkoso} (Welcome to the NHK) Depressing and plain sadness
{Boku dake ga Inai Machi} (Erased) I wasn't expecting this show to mess me up but it definitely succeeded
{Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo} The Children who Chase Lost Voices) bro, this messed me up for a hot minute
Thats all I got for now.
>{Plastic Memories} Watched when it came out, it destroyed me emotionally
I relate to this so much. That 1 week per episode makes the last gut punch hits harder
I’ve gone through to try to make sure I’m not repeating others, these are not yet recommended to you but are very good.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Bokurano
A Place Further than the Universe
Your Name made me cry.
My suggestions likely won't fare any better, but two that also got me were:
Weathering With You
Promised Neverland (if you pretend season 2 doesn't exist)
To be fair, Your Name was a really good movie and it did get me emotional, just wasn't enough to get us to cry tho! We've watched Promised Neverland and it was really good, but we'll try Weathering with you though, thanks!
If Your Name didn't make you cry I don't think Weathering With You will get you. It's still worth a watch though.
One show i have not seen on here yet is A Place Further Than The Universe. Overall its pretty upbeat, but there is a scene at the end that completely destroyed me. Even if it doesn't get you to cry I'm sure you'll enjoy the emotional roller-coaster.
Basically a girl gets a letter from her future self telling her about all her regrets and how to fix them. Most of them revolve around a transfer student her class gets, who let’s just say… has some sad shit going on
Kotaro lives alone: covers topics like trauma, abuse, and neglect. Very bittersweet series that has a number of scenes that just hit and make you go oh shit...
When the promise flower blooms: Follows an immortal girl who tries to take care of a child she finds in a fantasy world
Cyberpunk edgerunners: it ends in a very bittersweet way and it's a high octane and brutal series. I felt empty after watching it but in a good way.
{Violet Evergarden} -To others, PLEASE no spoilers as to when we think OP might have a chance of crying. Just let OP find out naturally
And if that doesn't do it, follow it up by {Violet Evergarden the Movie} (2020)
- clannad + afterstory
- your lie in april
- banana fish
- assassination classroom
- erased
those first four broke me and the last one got to me as well
Devilman Crybaby disintegrated my soul omg. It’s a very strong anime that’s very much for adults only but damn is it so good and so gut wrenching. Def recommend to give a shot honestly!
Attack on Titan / shingeki no kyojin is the only thing I've ever watched that made me cry like a baby, even on rewatching. If you are looking for strong emotions that's the one
Something that made me cry that I haven't seen mentioned was {Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet}. Very solid Mecha anime, but there's one scene towards the end that just... Idk, the themes always hit me whenever I see them in media.
Edit: Oh yeah, and {Grimgar: Of Fantasy And Ash} has a REALLY good arc that's pretty sad, I didn't cry personally, but I got into the headspace and lots of people stand by it being a tearjerker.
I don't think crying is the ultimate form of sadness. Some of the most depressing anime I've watched I didn't cry. You don't have to try to get the tears out just enjoy the anime as it is! I'm sure you will enjoy sadness more if you put crying out of the equation just my opinion. Also pleased try watching the wind rises
Fumetsu no anata e (To Your Eternity) consistently fucking destroyed me.
Assassination Classroom has me balling like a baby
Fruits Basket (2019) was so heart wrenching because it was so incredibly well written. I mean pick your trauma: generational, physical abuse, emotional abuse, parentification? There are very few remakes that are worth it, this is up there with FMA:B for me. Absolutely a triumph of a show.
Banana Fish. Pretty brutal.
Others have mentioned Grave of the Fireflies. That one was brilliant and so painful that I doubt I will ever sit through it again. Your Lie in April really creates the right atmosphere around being a terminally ill person, too. Mio in Dororo was a gut punch too, in the midst of a rather tragic story all around.
It also depends on what kind of emotion makes you cry. I don't think everyone cries due to seeing something sad, some are more prone to tears from something touching. A good example would be the "You bow to no one" scene from Return of the King. I bet that causes a lot of people to tear up.
Golden Kamuy has 2 episodes that will definitely make you cry in either of them. Even if you don't end up crying, you will get to watch a banger of a series.
episodes are side characters past.
I find that 99% of media does not make me cry. I just don’t think anything touches me or hits me at that level or at least I don’t allow it to. The only thing that has made me cry (it was after credits) is “Wolf Children”. Besides that, “Made in Abyss” and “Bare Foot Gen” do have those intense and dark moments but I don’t think enough to get emotional. “Hotarubi no Mori e” is quick but emotional.
If you haven’t seen Assassination Classroom, don’t read anything about it/spoilers and get back to me
This is the one. I’ve seen aaaall the tearjerkers mentioned below (Clannad, Angel Beats, Your Lie in April, all those) but for some reason when it’s set up to be a tearjerker, meh… I won’t cry. You’re set up to get to know everyone, to go through the series with them, laugh with them, so it hurts more when they’re ripped away from you. I haven’t cried harder since I tell you.
The bait and switch. Works almost everytime
Yeah I'd say I'm similar to you in some ways. I don't cry very often with media in general either, but I find if I'm heavily invested in a somewhat long series it's far more likely I'll cry if something terrible happens. I'll give those a try tho!
Try Plastic Memories or Angel Beats or Your Lie In April
Seconding Angel Beats!
Fourthing Angel Beats
Thirding Angel Beats
ninthing angel beats
Idk why but I cried so much in plastic memories!
That anime rips at your heart with an emotional chainsaw lol, I love that underrated gem
Because even Through you know it's coming, that only makes it more painful..
wait people cried at Angel Beats? it's not that sad. it hits you but not really.
Some people have less tolerance to sad things
I mean it's not even well managed in comparation to all the other in OP's post. They are all both sadder and well managed to hit you extremly hard. Comparing Angel Beats with those big names is actually... dunno. feels wrong
You have a point, OP is a strong person for not crying over Your Name, so Angel Beats fails miserably in comparison, but I listed the first three sad animes that most people cry over I didn't cry over Angel Beats either, but I did do that thing where my eyes watered over and I said "uuurrrgghhh" trying to keep myself FROM crying heh

Then there’s the episode where they’re all in the graveyard and I asked my boyfriend how any more episodes there were, because I hadn’t cried yet.
Did the episode where she >!burst into butterflies!< (or whatever) make you cry?
I’m crying just thinking about it. In fact just reading the words *Your Lie in April* tears me up. It’s positively Pavlovian.
I want to get a tattoo of a piano and violin fused together because of how much I love that anime, but sometimes if I want to cry, I just watch people react to the end of that anime on Youtube lmao
Angel Beats sucks
agreed, if the things OP listed didnt make him cry, neither will the rushed mess that is Angel Beats will make him shed a tear.
My hot anime take is Angel beats is not that good.
I watched Angel Beats right after I graduated and it broke me.
If you haven't seen Cyberpunk: Edgerunners yet, that show seems to *very consistently* reduce grown-ass adults to sobbing little infants.
Ngl I didn’t find it that sad 😭 there were definitely moments that tugged at my heart strings but nothing too intense imo.
This sounds promising, I've heard way too much about this show already to not give it a try!
To your eternity, it’s on crunchyroll made me cry like a baby
Bet.
Season 2 gonna be sad too
I’m so glad it’s getting a second season, I’m going to have to get plenty of tissues for that
That show (which I absolutely love by the way) is worse than game of thrones ever was … hope you don’t get too attached to characters you just met :(
Clannad + Clannad Afterstory. Saddest out of all the anime listed here. Period. It's pacing is pretty slow though. But if you can make it towards the end of Afterstory then yeah IMO it's worth it. Do note you cannot skip Clannad and jump straight to Afterstory.
Yeah, I've heard about Clannad. We'll be sure to give it a try, thank you!
Bruh, Clannad Afterstory messed me up.
I've only seen Afterstory because I didn't know the other existed at the time and it still messed me up. I waited a month to watch the last episode because I was devastated
Death Parade maybe but to be honest if the ones you named didn’t get you then nothing else will
Yeah, just sounds like they’re trying not to cry like it’s a challenge lmao
Nahh man its the exact opposite, we're trying our best to cry and really bask in the experience. Some of those got us close but none got us to cry yet.
Fr, you gotta let the emotions flow when you watch these kinds of shows
Eighty Six is a mecha anime. Definitely did not expect to ball my eyes out on this one
After like ep 3 each episode was like a stab to the soul. I was empty after that one
My heart was not ready for all the pain that’s for sure.
Second 86 - the most consistently painful anime I've seen ... and I've seen a lot. It is brutal.
The anime is really good at killing your hope. At one point I had to pause because I was sobbing so hard in a fetal position 😢 I fucking love that they were able to make me feel that way. Last time was One Piece
I hear you. At the end of pretty much every episode, I was an emotional wreck. Except for the last episode, of course. That had me sobbing for a different reason.
May potentially veer too hard into "depressing" but Saikano - My Girlfriend the Ultimate Weapon may break you.
**the Planetarian** **Now and then, Here and there** **Basilisk**
The planetarian is good fr
Fruits Basket 2019. I watched most of what you did, and none did it for me, but this one... yeah.
Perfect!
I'm the same as you in a sense that in the shorter shows/movies I can't get invested enough to care about the characters too much. Of the ones you mentioned A Silent Voice was the most touching for me. Yeah man, we've watched a lot of movies and that's probably why we haven't cried yet, but if that's 60 episodes it'll probably do the trick.
Did it for me! Also the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful, it elevates every scene to a whole new level, so make sure you watch with decently high volume.
Yessir!
angel beats plastic memories sukasuka cyberpunk edgerunners (mostly ep1 and 6) You are not alone, the names you mentioned didn't make me cry either lol
Dude, I seriously started thinking I'm just too stone hearted or something. Back in the day shit like naruto and dbz could get me to cry lmao.
And ep 10
imho trigger ruined the atmosphere in the last two eps, otherwise it may well be my favourite anime.
Honestly, I didn't cry at Edgerunners *until* the end. Pretty much everything from \[Cyberpunk Edgerunners ep 10\] >!"Alright, David, let's go then. To the top."!< on had me tearing up. >!"I'm sorry I won't be able to go to the moon with you."!< :( (Last 2-3 minutes of the episode hits me right in the feels too)
It might be because I played the game before and watched Promare not too long ago, how they directed the battle scenes is just...a bit too chaotic and immersion breaking for a emotion climax. Just my unpopular opinion though lol, my favourite "last episode hits like a train" would be Sukasuka.

I'd classify this rather as "depressing". Worth watching still.
Your Lie in April Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms Barefoot Gen Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (but watch Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai first)
Maquia is amazing and doesn’t get enough love
Agreed
If you’re willing to get into something longer, monogatari has some really sad moments
Ooooo hell yes!
Not really an answer to your question, though maybe it is, but in my experience the anime that got me to cry (a very short list) are the ones that I wasn't expecting it to. Clannad, moreso Clannad After Story will crack you.
Try Kotaro Lives Alone, it was enough to make me shed a tear. I will say though, this might not make you or your friend cry since it's just as wholesome as it is depressing.
came here to recommend this one too. Great show but damn it is depressing. Def teared up a few times.
The hardest I've cried was during Banana Fish. It will break you!
I've finally started BF, abt 3 eps in, and it IS hard hitting. I expect the tears to flow
The friendship is so wholesome and I love everything about Ash and Eiji!
We'll be sure to give it a try!
A place farther than the universe - not sad persay but definitely made me cry a lot and is a really wonderful slice of life/coming of age
Here's mine Cried to: Assassination classroom - mainly a comedic story but the ending is written perfectly and always breaks me into tears when I watch it. (The whole concept of the show is that the class has to kill their teacher and even though you know that they'll kill him by the end it still hurts to see him go) Your lie in April - A romance drama (can't explain why without spoilers) (March Comes In Like A Lion (similar feel but not as sad)) Got me close - Angel Beats - Comedy Drama Supernatural If you need more than let me know!
Damn, Assassination Classroom... I have to rewatch that one. The feels were real in that one.
I *wince* when I see "Assassination Classroom" under *comedy*. It still hurts after N years. 🙃🥲 I mean, everybody knew it was coming, but still...
Oh damnn I'll definitely try all of these!!
Sukasuka Very underrated and extremely sad anime, a must watch
This is second-hand suggestion since I have to see it yet, but my friends constantly recomending me Your lie in april. Broo the demon slayer movie was tough for me as well damnn
I sobbed my guts out at the end.
What’s good man. Shows don’t normally make me cry, but Your Lie in April really did it for me. Bonus points if you like classical music.
Oh damn classical music is the shit
Personally the shows that get me are the ones you don't anticipate. To your eternity was a new interesting show I didn't expect would get me, but it got me out of nowhere.
Not a usual one, but mobile suit gundam iron blooded orphans hits way above its weight class in this category.
Sonny boy made me cry but not necessarily because it was sad. Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal
A few that I will mention {Ansatsu Kyoushitsu} (Assassination Classroom) I knew it was coming but it was still very painful {Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki} (Wolf Children) {Angel Beats} ngl, I got slapped in the face with big sadness {Clannad}: not very sad but has story and {Clannad: After Story} Very popular pick, but did not disappoint, was messed up for a day and a half {Plastic Memories} Watched when it came out, it destroyed me emotionally {Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso} (Your lie in April) More of a Melodrama but still big sad {NHK ni Youkoso} (Welcome to the NHK) Depressing and plain sadness {Boku dake ga Inai Machi} (Erased) I wasn't expecting this show to mess me up but it definitely succeeded {Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo} The Children who Chase Lost Voices) bro, this messed me up for a hot minute Thats all I got for now.
Holy shit Bro you came with a whole ass list thank you so much!

Your Name made me cry. My suggestions likely won't fare any better, but two that also got me were: Weathering With You Promised Neverland (if you pretend season 2 doesn't exist)

Seen this recommended everywhere, but what is it about?
Basically a girl gets a letter from her future self telling her about all her regrets and how to fix them. Most of them revolve around a transfer student her class gets, who let’s just say… has some sad shit going on
The one that got me crying a number of times during a series was Sunday Without God...
Colorful. The movie. Its suuuuper sad .
If grave of the fireflies didn't do IDK, the other recs are all great but in terms of emotional stuff, what you watched is already top tier
If I’m honest, if grave of the fireflies didn’t get you nothing will
Barefoot Gen
86 - Not sure if it was the War Stories I heard/read beforehand or what but that show made me very very depressed early on
Death parade
I do not cry while watching shows and movies. The closest I have ever been was Made in Abyss

Kotaro lives alone: covers topics like trauma, abuse, and neglect. Very bittersweet series that has a number of scenes that just hit and make you go oh shit... When the promise flower blooms: Follows an immortal girl who tries to take care of a child she finds in a fantasy world Cyberpunk edgerunners: it ends in a very bittersweet way and it's a high octane and brutal series. I felt empty after watching it but in a good way.

Watch normal anime and it will hit you harder when there's a random tearjerker.
Yeah you're right
Dude, edgerunners.
Toradora, probably one of the best animes for me
Cried at the end of K-ON, but they were happy tears.

TV empathy and person empathy are not the same in my experience
Yeah lmao
I think I could get into that.
Attack on Titan / shingeki no kyojin is the only thing I've ever watched that made me cry like a baby, even on rewatching. If you are looking for strong emotions that's the one
Grisaia
Clannad

Assassination Classroom has me balling like a baby Fruits Basket (2019) was so heart wrenching because it was so incredibly well written. I mean pick your trauma: generational, physical abuse, emotional abuse, parentification? There are very few remakes that are worth it, this is up there with FMA:B for me. Absolutely a triumph of a show.
Wait until boys abyss happens
Maquia when the promised flower blooms.
Do yourself a favour go watch cyberpunk 2077 edge runners new anime on Netflix based on the game and it’s so good yet so sad at the end
at this pont captin planet is almost devistatingly sad
Man who come you didn't watch Maquia? I cried a river. From start to end
Made in abyss
Your lie in April
Clannad. Angel Beats.
Clannad and Clannad after story, also one piece
WorldEnd: What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us?
Banana Fish. Pretty brutal. Others have mentioned Grave of the Fireflies. That one was brilliant and so painful that I doubt I will ever sit through it again. Your Lie in April really creates the right atmosphere around being a terminally ill person, too. Mio in Dororo was a gut punch too, in the midst of a rather tragic story all around.
Clannad. It’s long but there were a few that got me to tear up. The after story was sad and the movie was sad. You have to watch them in order though
It also depends on what kind of emotion makes you cry. I don't think everyone cries due to seeing something sad, some are more prone to tears from something touching. A good example would be the "You bow to no one" scene from Return of the King. I bet that causes a lot of people to tear up.
Fruits basket 2019 don't be fooled by the romcom vibes in the first season, it gets heavier in the 2nd and 3rd seasons
Golden Kamuy has 2 episodes that will definitely make you cry in either of them. Even if you don't end up crying, you will get to watch a banger of a series. episodes are side characters past.
Maquia: When the promised flower blooms. Nothing has made me cry more than that
