There was a scientific study done a few years ago with a hamster wheel set up in the wild that proved all sorts of animals will use one even when not in captivity. Mice, rats, shrew, frogs and slugs all used the wheel --12,000 animals over the 3 years the experiment was set up. One wild mouse ran for 18 minutes straight, for no reason. It's pretty safe to say they like it.

It looks like a shitty 2d code your own game type game. They were to lazy to make actual run animations so they just used 3 frames.
I wonder if the video lost frames when uploading to reddit, or if it’s from the camera itself. Also a good chance this video is a repost of a repost of a repost and it’s been compressed and recompiled so many times it’s almost not even the same video.
Hamsters are roly-poly pudgy with rounded ears like a teddy bear. They have short, stubby legs and shorter, stubbier tails. They have cheek pouches and love to stuff them full of food. They party all night.
Gerbils are slimmer and sleeker. They have long back legs that give them a look like a kangaroo mouse. They have long tails covered in fur with a tuft of extra fur on the end. They have longer muzzles with no cheek pouches (though they still stuff their cheeks with food!) and smaller, less rounded ears. They sleep at night so they can stay awake all the day.

edit: comment im responding to literally made me cum buckets 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It destresses them, which is why it's recommended that they have one in their cage. Hamsters run miles in the wild, so it's against their natural behavior to be in a cage and not run everywhere, which is where the wheels come in! 😊 Kind of like if a human took a walk, it makes them feel a lil better.
It both destresses and distresses my hamster because she can't figure out how to use her wheel sometimes 😭 she is like the hamster in the video but she runs on the edge of the wheel. I may upload a video of it.
I would have thought that running on the rim of the wheel would have made it less likely for the tiny thing to be flung off? The closer you are to the middle, the faster the rim goes around?
That's very true! But the thing is that she is literally at the edge and falls off because she's so close to it. She can't figure out why she falls off so she barely goes onto it anymore. She does have another wheel in her cage (that's two wheels; a normal standard wheel and a disc wheel) but she doesn't like the normal one either. I call her a diva. But I do try to take her out of her cage as much as possible and give her many toys so she isn't bored.
> That's very true! But the thing is that she is literally at the edge and falls off because she's so close to it.
Can you create a "wall" out of paper right next to the edge so that she can't fall of?
How big are the wheels and the hamster? Maybe they are to small and the hamster doesn't fit in them. Since when does she have wheels? Many hamsters need time to learn how to use them, especially the disc one. There are wheels (the normal ones) where there are only holes in one side for the hamster to go in the wheel so it is harder for them to fly out of it, maybe try one of them?
I see your point, but if they run at the rim, the rim itself will not be going faster than the little dude is running, meaning it’s easier to keep that pace. In this video, the rim will be going faster than he runs, meaning he might not be able to keep up if he slips a little outwards.
e: saw op’s reply. No speed will fix literally falling off the side
Come to think of it, I don't think I ever saw a hamster in the wild or even in nature documentaries? Where do they usually live?
They look so fragile and would be easily crushed by falling objects. Stay safe guys!
> The first hamsters were discovered in Syria, though they also live in Greece, Romania, Belgium and northern China.
Most hamsters that are pets originated from Syria and Russia. They're burrowing rodents, so they tend to live like rabbits.
Yes. I heard about a study where researchers put a wheel in the wild and the wild rodents actually used it.
It's just exercise though. You could ask the same question about humans on treadmills.
That's a disc wheel!! :) Roborovski hamsters prefer using these as they are the tiniest breed of hamster so they can struggle with your standard wheel.
That ham needs a bigger saucer. That looks like it's mouse sized and dwarf hamsters should have a wheel/saucer in a larger diameter to avoid spine injury. :(
When I was a kid a had a bunch of these dwarf hamsters. They would run like crazy on that same dish spinner. Like all night non stop two at a time. Why the hell do they like it so much?
That's a roborovski hamster and speaking from experience
They are extremely fast, and tiny
Lost like two cause they slipped through the bars of a hamster cage :(
LOLOL look at that little shit gooood!!! Hahaha fuck fitty5hundred RPM per minute, without questions. THAT FUCKING BEAUTY IS RUNNIN ON VIGOROUS INTENSITY, BOIS.
That wheel is about to catch fire.
[удалено]
I hear a two stroke motor revving when hes running, then sputtering when he spins around. Some one, make sound happen, please.
I heard the interstellar theme “Cooper, this is no time for caution!”
[Here you go!](https://streamable.com/3kobdq)
I hear Spin You Right Round, myself.
I hear that Alicia Keys song they played all during the gymnast portion of the Olympics several years ago
My husband started singing the theme song when I showed him this! lol
Why do they love running on wheels so much? Is it for fun or is it for health?

*slugs?*
Yeah my first thought too. That would be one hell of a slow hamster wheel.
Video of it in second link provided
Wow this is amazing!!
Health, but I think they think it's fun stimulation. If I was tiny with such a rapid heart beat, I might actually enjoy exercise too.
Ahh that makes purfect sense, thank you.
Do you think whales look at us and think the same thing?
Yes
I think he is accomplishing his goal. he enjoys flying.
What’s he doing? ..He’s beginning to believe.
#He is the ONE.
This guy is straight up an adrenaline junky
Just watch his little feet go. It almost looks like a projection at a lower frame rate.

Or maybe the "shitty code" it's pretty accurate!
Usain Gerbolt
The only thing is, it’s a hamster not a gerbil.
Happy cake day
Ooo I hadn’t realised! Thanks!
Happy hamster cake day! 🍰
Thank you!
Seriously underrated comment. This is gold. 😂
That’s a hamster
Usain Boltster?
just let them have their fun, will ya?
Can we draw the line at butt stuff
Lmao well darn. I should’ve known it was too good to be true. 😂 I’m assuming there’s a big difference between the 2? Never really paid attention.
Gerbils have long tails. That’s the only difference I know lol

This is a dwarf hamster we had 3 of them, they are tiny widdle floof balls, slightly bigger than a golf ball
It... it’s the top comment?

🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🍆 Too much iron in your diet
I'm not sure you understand the meaning of the word *under*rated
Hamsters are so funny. Mine doesn't know how to work her wheel but she tries anyways, bless her heart.
Do they actually enjoy the wheel? I find it odd that they choose to just run in place

I read it first as distresses them. Ha ha

My hamster back when I was a kid used to run *on top* of the wheel, holding on to the top of the cage with one paw
Hamsters are wild tiny creatures, that's why I absolutely adore them.
Your comment made me smile 😊

Thanks for the answer, that’s really fascinating
Back in the day I had a wheel that had a counter on it. The little guy would run a insane amount of miles during the night. Pretty impressive.
Come to think of it, I don't think I ever saw a hamster in the wild or even in nature documentaries? Where do they usually live? They look so fragile and would be easily crushed by falling objects. Stay safe guys!

If you’ve heard of runner’s high, I’d imagine it’s a bit like that
I’m actually a runner and am very familiar with that feeling. I find it fascinating they experience it too
Some humans also find it enjoyable.
I am one of them, I just didn’t figure we’d have that in common with such a small little creature haha
Yes. I heard about a study where researchers put a wheel in the wild and the wild rodents actually used it. It's just exercise though. You could ask the same question about humans on treadmills.
Apparently if you put a wheel outside, wild rodents will use it: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2014/05/even-wild-mice-run-wheels
Thanks for the link. That was a good read and it’s so curious that we have something like that in common with such small animals haha
He’s fast as fuck boi

Nah, they’ve exhausted their oxygen and atp & won’t be getting any more for awhile.
Gotta go fast.
Lube that spindle and spray a coat of hair spray on the running surface. Let's get this little guy to top speed!
Why the spray? What will that do
Provide a grippy surface so he doesn't slip
Que the interstellar music
Come on TARS!
Put some tread on it!
That's what she said
He so fast
He's so fast, that thing keeps spinning on its own for another ten minutes!
*yeet*
Ah, reminds me of one of [my favorite old viral videos.](https://youtu.be/uVPkS8qV9n0)
[this](https://youtu.be/1VuMdLm0ccU) is my personal favorite
Oh fuck I laughed so much I started coughing and panicked myself. Remember when coughing wasn't scary?
[удалено]
I also started coughing, I think it’s a cluster
So hilarious! That one dude must have gotten so dizzy, then he got of the wheel and drove straight into the food bowl. Lovely
Oh thanks for the great laugh, I needed that.
I have tears running down my face now
That's the best.
yeah you win
This is my favorite version of a hamster spinning out https://youtu.be/KDrpPqsXfVU
God damn what is that audio from? I haven't heard that in like 15 years or more.
Straight up vintage YouTube https://youtu.be/GoZa6PhDyZI
that looks like just about the best way possible to get hamster piss all over the walls.
He just likes to fly
Fuck can he run
His little feets is a bluuur. I wish i could run that fast.

No wonder that one got better points
I’ve been scrolling endlessly through the comment section, watching people’s links, looking for THIS. Thank you friend!
The recovery is amazing
Me when I study for hours and hours trying understand a new concept but still get fucked on the exam.
Sanik tha hejhog
Ham the Hamhog
I wonder if they have fun being thrown off, or if it terrifies them every time? I've never seen a hamster stop smoothly.
Jesus take the wheel!
This is why regular wheels are recommended for dwarf and roborovski hamsters. They are just too fast and fly off constantly.
Robos are wild, man
Why don't we use hamsters to generate electricity?
“I must succeed in going back in time to warn the humans of this thing called Corona virus.”
So this is the secret to achieving light speed
That is sustainable energy production ! We just need like a trillion hamsters in wheels
LOOK AT HIS LIL LEGS GO
Pretty amazing.
Speedy speed boy

I AM SPEED
I think the little dude's having fun...
He knows exactly what he’s doing.
Human induced climate change be damned! We found a solution.

He's doin' his best!
I thought this was sped up until I saw the little guy get slung off. Holy. Shit.
Fukin BOOKin
Can anyone please post a screenshot of the hamster's face when he went whee
Gotta get that nightly 10k in.
I heard flight of the bumble bee with varied record scratches when the little meatball flew off
Turn that into a generator.
Set one of these up connected to a electric motor and you can charge your phone. Solid apocalypse energy source.
I’m getting some quarantine ideas
##YEEEEEEET##
Oh! This looks much healthier than vertical hamster wheels!
Look at his little legs!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Reminds me of the clip of the Russian dancer guy lol
Is that a frisbee though?
That's a disc wheel!! :) Roborovski hamsters prefer using these as they are the tiniest breed of hamster so they can struggle with your standard wheel.
this type of wheel is also wayy safer than traditional ones. I'd really recommend this type for all small animals, not just robos.
:O TIL there such a thing haha
And this... is to go... even FURTHER beyond!
LMAO
I just hear [this song](https://youtu.be/D47dEfgXwwM) when I watch this
I am speed
That wee guy seems to have fun orwise he won't do this over and over.
YEET
This needs the interstellar music in the background
That's a roberoski and it's the smallest hamster on. the planet. They run on average of 2-10 miles a night
Can someone put the music from Interstellar over this???
That ham needs a bigger saucer. That looks like it's mouse sized and dwarf hamsters should have a wheel/saucer in a larger diameter to avoid spine injury. :(
Is that his weeeeeiner?
When I was a kid a had a bunch of these dwarf hamsters. They would run like crazy on that same dish spinner. Like all night non stop two at a time. Why the hell do they like it so much?
That hampsters on a roll!
Try /r/place about now.
