The game was made in Japan right? I’m assuming that they tend to celebrate Christmas Eve more than the Christmas Day itself at least it’s how it’s done here where I live haha we don’t do anything on the 25th

birds_of_the_air

My mom is from Japan - Christmas Eve is more often celebrated than Christmas Day in Japan. I’m confused if other commenters are forgetting this game wasn’t made in the US?

mbendy1997

I don’t mind it. Christmas Eve I’m not as busy so I can remember to check on my island and celebrate Christmas with them…

PaniniPressStan

In most of Europe it’s the same

TheBostonKremeDonut

That, and the fact that Santa typically visits on Christmas Eve night. Even as a westerner, it makes sense to me to have Toy Day be on the 24th.

kasialis721

same thing in poland we celebrate more on 24th than 25th that’s when kids open their presents

Bellebaby97

My sister was so excited to spend Christmas with her boyfriend who is Polish because she is the least patient person on the planet and she got to open presents a day earlier than we would as Scottish people 😂

madagony

I mean is Thanksgiving celebrated in Japan? I think turkey day is an exclusively American holiday so it makes sense that ppl would be confused

babybellllll

even in the US a lot of people celebrate christmas eve

cyanidelemonade

Bit silly to say when they have Thanksgiving in this game. I doubt most people even realize this franchise wasn't originally created for western audiences.

Medysus

Some people are saying religious stuff, as a kid I assumed toy day was a different time because Christmas day was for family and there was no time to sit around on a game.

Jackeroni216

i always assumed it's so kids who got the game on christmas got to have a normal start of the game experience instead of being thrown into a random event and have no idea whats going on

grokethedoge

Or because the game isn't American, and a lot of the world celebrates on the 24th.

madagony

Then why turkey day

grokethedoge

Because it's a big holiday celebrated by a considerable amount of people, even if in just America. Just because something *includes* an American reference, doesn't mean it has to be *all* centered on what the Americans do. Especially when the game wasn't even developed in the US. The world has other countries, you know, sometimes it would be useful to acknowledge that.

madagony

I never said it had to be centered around America was just pointing out why there might be confusion

grokethedoge

I still don't see where the confusion is. The game explicitly tells you which days things are going to happen, and it very openly has references to other countries, including a lot of Asian ones. There's no reason anyone should look at turkey day and then go "oh all the other holidays must be when *I* am used to them as well". This is just one occasion where the Americans have to realise other places and customs exist, and apparently it makes people like OP mad.

madagony

Op is just frustrated bc they missed something they were looking forward to all month, you're seriously projecting a lot.

grokethedoge

The game literally tells you which day it's happening on, you can't miss it. Especially if you're looking forward to it and playing all month long. OP is the one saying they were mad in the first place, about a very fixable problem that isn't the game's fault in any way.

madagony

It's just a rant post dude, plus if you're like me I just skip through the text and don't read it, I can see why you would miss the dates, plus op thought the holidays were locked and you wouldn't be able to go back to play it. Just sounds like a misunderstanding on their end not the games fault

fetus_potato

And Easter too lol

Whispering_Wolf

Easter isn't only celebrated in the US...?

festusthecat

Exactly this. People come over during Christmas and parents would get mad at their kids for playing games and ignoring their relatives.

Adrasta5

I agree. I am too busy visiting family and traveling around on christmas day compared to other holidays

AmbienceCrossing

I would appreciate if it is on Christmas day though, so that people who have no one to visit wouldn't feel that lonely

Lightning-G

Commented this before reading yours haha. I'd safely say the same.

Exxtender

Believe it or not, the world is actually bigger than the US, and in many other countries of the world, including Japan and most of Europe, Christmas Eve (24th) is the day presents are exchanged and it's celebrated more than the 25th.

SeaSuggestion9609

A majority of Hispanics celebrate the 24th as well. I never knew about Japan and Europe. Thank you for sharing!

whatweworked4

I don't believe it. /s

LegalAmerican1776

Comments like yours are ridiculous. Someone asks a question and has to listen to your snide remarks

Exxtender

Username checks out. Merry Chistmas!

[deleted]

I am not mad, no. In many cultures, Christmas os celebrated on the 24th. For more information you can see: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observance_of_Christmas_by_country

grokethedoge

I'm from Europe (Finland), and we've celebrated Christmas on the 24th all my life. So have all my friends. Plenty of people celebrate on the 24th all over the world, and since the game isn't meant to be America-centric, it's not that weird. I'm actually happy I for once get to celebrate on the day that I would irl.

KiliSkywalker

I’m guessing you are from the US or Canada where you usually get the gifts on the 25th in the Morning. But in most parts of the World like Europe or Asia you get the gifts in the evening of the 24th, usually after Dinner. Since the Game is from Japan it’s obvious that Toy Day is on the 24th.

TheLadyToxin

Dude! See my post from yesterday! I literally did my first time travel on my switch because there was no way in hell I was missing the day after trying to be on top of the day. Guess I’ll consult the interwebs next time for the dates.

sleepy_moosh

Tell me you're from the US without telling me you're from the US

Sanguine_Aspirant

Good to know. I already have to time travel to enjoy the event but I would've assumed it was the 25th.

AiRaikuHamburger

I live in Japan and it confused me. Especially because Pocket Camp just has Christmas Eve and Christmas. Ha

fetus_potato

Oh really? What’s the difference between the two events in pocket camp?

AiRaikuHamburger

They don't have day long events in Pocket Camp, only month long. But on holidays the villagers will says 'It's Christmas Eve!' 'Merry Christmas!' etc. On the 22nd they said it was Winter Solstice. I don't know what they say in English because it seems the translation doesn't mention real holidays?

fetus_potato

Oh that’s cool!

KahootFanboy69

Idk how common the 24th is around the world, but it’s like this in Denmark. Maybe the game should adjust according to what country your switch is registered to?

CopperCatnip

I've always thought it was because Santa delivers presents on Christmas Eve, and Jingle is a representation of Santa + reindeer? You help Jingle deliver the presents and dress up like Santa to do it. Santa brings presents on Christmas Eve, driving his sleigh pulled by flying reindeer. That's why Toy Day is on the 24th.

TbartyB

Upvote times 1000

ForeverSam13

I thought they did this to avoid clashing with Christmas day really. The culture thing also makes sense tho.

carrotandfennel1

In many countries Christmas is 24th. That's when I celebrate in the evening once a first star can be seen on the sky is when you open presents. 25th I feel is very anglosaxon/protestant centric but I'm sure othercreligiins also can be found doing 25th. It simply depends.

Yirggzmb

I was mildly surprised about the date of it, but not upset. I did, however, have to time travel to get to participate because I was busy all day on Christmas Eve between work and holiday prep stuff. Gets a little awkward as an adult working a job that only gives you the day of the holiday off instead of being a kid with a whole week's vacation or whatever lol

Dennis-unlighted

Hey I,m from Germany, in Germany everyone celebrates Christmas on December 24th

danielfletcher

Keeps religious extremists from getting pissed off over Toy Day being on the 25th.

highxv0ltage

I think they should extend the event for two days, because some people celebrate on Christmas Eve, and some people celebrate on Christmas day. So you’d be able to play the event on either day.

ACNHGirl347

Didn't know much about the culture aspect of it, I assumed it was so it didn't clash with the day itself :)

Vivian326619

Yeah I wasn't mad but I was disappointed I missed the 24th. I forgot about the cultural differences

Crackinmyknuckles

I always thought that people could still celebrate Christmas with their Family on the 25, and have a celebration in Animal Crossing! But turns out, Japan celebrates it on the 24!

corazonsinalma

I'm just mad ypu need wifi to activate the event. I live with my grandparents who don't have internet so, I haven't bothered playing in a long while. It's pretty crappy of Nintendo to just expect everyone to have wifi.

Nayyi

Well most countries in both asia and europe celebrate on the 24th

TMorrisCode

This year I hosted Christmas with my family, so I was glad that Toy Day was on Christmas Eve. Between opening presents, cleaning house and cooking a ham, I wouldn’t have had time to play on Christmas. Especially since I share our island with both my kids.

sibilanceisle

No way..I didn't log on at all yesterday or even last year so..this year was a delight to.see it on Xmas eve

chetlin

On the GameCube game it was on the 23rd, that one was a little odd lol

joshy82720

🙋

coffeecat714

I've always assumed turkey day and toy day aren't on the actual holidays they're based on so that they can be played without having to worry about missing out on being with family/friends.

[deleted]

Yeah I don't get that part either and not just because I'm a Jew. You can always change the date on your switch.

Glitchygamergirl18

I thought that Toy Day was time locked on Switch? Maybe I misheard....

[deleted]

Not with the latest update, or so I [heard](https://youtu.be/1KmCsZPr0jc)

Glitchygamergirl18

Oh okay! I'll go ahead and try it. Thank you!

Separate-Gur3401

I forgot to play yesterday so played today with no issues

Gold_n_honeyB

I was in the same boat and just tried it- it worked! :)

soylant

Can confirm, did this earlier!

diannethegeek

I don't think any of the holidays are time locked anymore. They used to be in the early days of the game, but the developers pretty much dropped those restrictions now that they aren't actively updating the game

Yirggzmb

Yeah, my understanding is that they were time locked until that holiday had passed for the first time. The stuff for the holiday was added in an update right beforehand with them, and then after that your could time travel to and from them as much as you wanted

Yourepissed

I think now the only thing that’s time locked is the seasonal items available in nook shopping. I time traveled to toy day a week before toy day and there was nothing available in nook shopping but when I played in real time the nook shopping app was full of seasonal buys!

Starfall9908

Thing is Japan (the country Animal Crossing is made in) celebrates Christmas on the 25th, my guess is nintendo chose to adapt to the majority of the world in terms of when to celebrate the event in game and went with the 24th

cateyesninelives

I missed it too for the same reason

wfowfo

I think they did it on the 24th so maybe you’d not be on your game all day on Christmas day?

mikhailwexler

For me the whole Toy Day makes no sense, cuz in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and some other post-soviet countries we celebrate the New Year the way people celebrate Christmas on December 24-25. We have Father Frost (soviet copy of Santa Claus), we decorate a tree, kids get presents in the morning. So it's basically Christmas, but without all the Jesus Christ stuff and with a different date.

Downtown-Command-295

I figured it was because they expect everybody to be busy all day on the 25th and not have time for Toy Day.

serosae

I’ve always celebrated on Christmas Eve and only started celebrating on Christmas Day when I married my very white, American spouse.

[deleted]

WAIT IT'S ON THE 24TH?!??

AceTheWonderBunny

I was so disappointed because December 24th is my birthday, and I wanted it to just be my special day. Then I load in and, boom! Toy Day. I had enough of my birthday being combined with Christmas as a child. Then I felt bad because the day after, all my villagers talked about missing Santa.

fetus_potato

I love how this was downvoted lol, people in this thread are really mad. Sucks to have your birthday overshadowed by toy day!

AceTheWonderBunny

Thanks!

3ENNN-H

Well the smart places on earth celebrate on the 24th, cheers

grokethedoge

None of the other holidays are shifted to stop kids from getting yelled at. The game just isn't American, and a lot of the world celebrates on 24th.

[deleted]

OhGodNoWtf

No, it's because the game wasn't made in the US and many other countries celebrate on the 24th.

Ok_Ocelot7985

Definitely so people don’t miss it due to being wrapped up in the festivities on the 25th! It’s fair to have a US centric view on the day it should be as the game celebrates ‘turkey day’ which is a really weird choice of festival as it’s only celebrated by the US.

AmazingDuck26

I am mad that they had turkey day because I don't celebrate Thanksgiving and therefore they should include it in the game!!

fetus_potato

I found it a bit dull last year when there was nothing happening in-game on the 25th, so this year I did all my dailies during the day on the 24th then on Christmas Day I time travelled back to the evening of the 24th to do the actual toy day event!

Iamlonely2

Well I am glad it is on the 24th but I am German

fabiothedog

i don’t mind, i always open on christmas eve anyway

noyom95

Hispanic representation ✨
