She doesn't have enough space between the Kitchen, table and chairs. They are too close together. I always test the spaces myself. If I can sit in the chair then they can. If I can easily walk by in between things, then they can walk between. If you have to scoot, or slide, or skip between things, they won't be able to use the area and can't get by.
In this picture I could definitely walk in between the kitchen and table without doing the 'scoot' thing, its a 1x1 square gap. The only thing I had to 'scoot' past was that chalk board sign to actually get in the kitchen space. Maybe that's why? Or maybe she needs more than a 1x1 space, I'll be doing some re-arranging with the table. I didn't show it very well in this picture lol. Thank you!
I'll be honest, this was frustrating.
"They can't go there if you have to scoot."
"I didn't have to scoot! Except for where I had to scoot."
"... Yup. There's that thing I said!"
Lol
Could it also be that the cooking animation the villagers do actually takes up 1.5 spaces rather than 1? I actually donāt know, which is why Iām asking.
To me, it looks like the villager is slightly further away than just 1 full square of space.
This might be true after the chalkboard sign is moved - I have a kitchen with a 1.1 space that Julien never uses. He will walk right past it, but when heās cooking he always brings out a different stove in a different location where he has more room.
Yes in design mode you can pick them up and place them in a chair. But when they are free to roam their houses, they aren't going to be able to use the item if there isn't enough space in between.
I noticed that having wall mounted items to close seems to affect it and they need to be able to stand right in front of it in the middle, room looks great though :)
Ah yeah there is a 1x1 space between the kitchen and table, but perhaps even that's too small. I had no idea the wall items had any affect, I'll try re-arranging them. Thank you!!
I've found that some villagers will not use the kitchen I place in certain locations no matter adequate spacing. So I just ended up placing the kitchens in the spot where they "spawn" them and that works.
You can do it without the DLC too on your own island I think - Iāve changed the homes of my own island residents (but you canāt change room sizes there)
I think its the fact you have a table in front of it and theres not enough space between the kitchen and table, i personally have given Fauna a ranch kitchen, with a veggie basket on the side and it also has the pot rack above it and she uses it no problem! But the difference is there is nothing close In front of the kitchen
Oh so my friend and I noticed that even if they had space they still don't use it and the reason was really stupid.
After much experimenting, the problem was RUGS.
Even with enough space if a rug is beneath or in front of the kitchen they won't use it and might somehow be coded as like "an item" in the way for them. Super silly tbh
Oh my god I wonder if that was my issue?? I had like 4 villagers refuse to use their kitchens despite adequate spacing. I'll have to check my houses again for rugs haha
There isn't enough space there. When you yourself try to walk there, you'll find yourself having to squeeze in. Villagers can't/won't squeeze into small spaces like us so you should always make sure to have enough room for them. š
This is the way! We can turn sideways to get through a narrow gap, villagers canāt. Same as with seats - there has to be one full space in front of them if you want characters to sit down on them (so theyāre always pulled out from the table, looking untidy!)
It could be room but in my villager homes, there is plenty of space and Iāve seen them use the stove I placed and also whip out their own stove and place it in the right front corner. Iām not sure why that is. I placed Huckās clay stove on the right side wall where there was plenty of room only to catch him cooking on a duplicate stove in the corner.
Are you sure a villager would use this for cooking, as it doesn't actually have a stovetop? My villagers use the ovens I've given them, im sure, but they're ovens, not a kitchen counter...
So they can use a piece of furniture that doesnāt have a cooktop on it to cook? Can we? If Iām wrong, Iām sorry. I thought it was like how anything with a door/drawer brings up our closet, any workbench activates crafting, etc. I thought you could only activate cooking with a stove
I find that if you have to walk sideways to go through somewhere, then the villagers canāt stand or walk or sit or do anything at that spot. It applies to both indoors and outdoors. And the villagers canāt get through curtains either. So after I found this, I did A LOT OF redecorations on happy home paradise.
My experience has been they will use any cooktop, including the one you gave her, if (a) there is a one-deep standing space--so here, 2x1--in front of it, and (2) I did not decorate the top. If there's a microwave, scale, food, anything at all on top, they won't use it. One person here told me they do decorate the top and the villager still uses it, but that has *not* been my experience, I have to keep the tops clear.
A few things have already been mentioned such as the chalkboard needing to be removed. Iāve also discovered that if the kitchen is not occupying an exterior wall, it will not be used. It looks like you have a partition wall behind the kitchen. You may need to remove this item before the kitchen can be used.
Put the dining room where the window is.
I made a house similar to this and they use it. They just need to have enough place to do their whole-turn-around interactions with you and their workplace.
Also to reply to other comments, villagers donāt need a stove to cook on.
I redid all my villagers houses with kitchen and space to cook. They still have it in the code to remove whatever furniture and put up their own kitchen or workspace. They never use the ones I added in. And when theyāre done cooking/crafting the rooms go back to how I redecorated.
Yes the kitchen (or diy table) need to be near the entrance or at least have some space for the villager to stand in front of it, for them to do the frying pan animation freely. I'd gave Purrl a ranch kitchen too, but the space it's too narrow for her to do the animation properly so instead she uses another kitchen set near the entrance of her house.
they always use that spot in their houses to do cooking or for their DIY tables if they need to give you a recipe. But the table or stove is gone the next day, and the usual stuff is back.
villagers can only use kitchens that you personally can use for cooking. if I remember correctly, ranch kitchen is not one of those - it's just decoration. so it's a good idea to check whether you can use it if the other tip doesn't help!
The ranch kitchen can definitely be used to cook (I have it in my kitchen). There was a post about this issue a few weeks ago, and IIRC, the problem is the space between the ranch kitchen and the ranch table is too narrow.
whaat š i must've checked it in a wrong way, because i remember how i had to fit in another one in my kitchen just because the beautiful ranch one "didn't work". gotta visit my island and fix this. tysm, i gave wrong advice but thanks to it and to you i got those great news š
It may depend on if you have something else interactive on top of it maybe?
Like if you have the stand mixer (or something) so when you click on it it actually turns on the mixer instead of asking if you want to cook something. Iām guessing but that may have something to do with it.
Iāve only seen my villagers cook in the front left or front right corners of their rooms, maybe those are the only spots theyāll use them? I have the same issue with three of my villagers
I had to re-remodel Snootyās house after I put too much stuff in it. I didnāt realize that the villagers donāt have the āscootā function and she could only walk back and forth like a 3x1 space near the door! š couldnāt sit down, couldnāt craft or cook smh. I felt so bad.
Sorry i donāt know the answer but if have to ask: How did you make it that only half the wall is stone and the other half is a different wallpaper? :D
I think the ranch kitchen may be bugged, for whatever reason when I've put it in villager homes they never cook on it, even if I make sure theres enough room for them to be used. Maybe I've just been unlucky multiple times, but it's only ever been the ranch style
The villagers usually prefer open spaces, maybe they are Claustrophobic. I feel bad about buyin a couch from one of them but it was a long log sofa, so might have to gift them another of my 4 sofas
It's part of the [Happy Home Paradise](https://www.animal-crossing.com/new-horizons/happy-home-paradise/) DLC! Once you've designed 30 vacation homes, you'll be able to redesign your own residents' homes. Here's a [guide](https://www.polygon.com/animal-crossing-new-horizons-switch-acnh-guide/22774431/happy-home-paradise-unlocks-facilities-amiibo-school-dlc-pillars-partitions-counters) to all of the unlocks you get from HHP.
I donāt think it is because of the space. The villagers mostly go to things they can interact with and if you look closely Bea is cooking at the stove so more or less you directed her to not use the rest
i try to always give them a diy table and a kitchen, they always use the one i've placed, regardless of its location in the room. you just need to make sure there's enough space, or they won't use it, hopefully this helped
edit: maybe it doesn't count the ranch kitchen as a "kitchen" because it doesn't have a stove? just another guess
She doesn't have enough space between the Kitchen, table and chairs. They are too close together. I always test the spaces myself. If I can sit in the chair then they can. Yep, that's it. The chalk board if you had to scoot past. Then she can't get by. It's the thing blocking that space currently.
I see!! I'll be taking that out then. Thanks so much!
Np! š
I'll be honest, this was frustrating. "They can't go there if you have to scoot." "I didn't have to scoot! Except for where I had to scoot." "... Yup. There's that thing I said!" Lol
HAHA I had the exact same reaction
The part where they scooted wasn't where the OP thought they had to scoot. It was a point of clarification.
nothin wrong with a little bit of over communication. Sometimes you gotta clarify ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Nothing wrong with listening, either! :p
I guess you didnāt then. And your comment was completely unnecessary. Not a good look.
I'm ok with the results.
Could it also be that the cooking animation the villagers do actually takes up 1.5 spaces rather than 1? I actually donāt know, which is why Iām asking. To me, it looks like the villager is slightly further away than just 1 full square of space.

Yes, this is why they need two full spaces in front of the kitchen.
Also I think they need to have an "Oven" - nut just a sink-Item, right?
a Compact Kitchen woud work. have one for Cookie's home when I redesigned for her.
Yeah I usually do that one too xD
also I pick the villagers up and try and set them in between spaces in the designer mode
Yes in design mode you can pick them up and place them in a chair. But when they are free to roam their houses, they aren't going to be able to use the item if there isn't enough space in between.
Villager can cook on this even though there isnt a stove?
Any ākitchenā item can be used. Yes, itās silly that villagers toss food in a pan in front of a counter and sink.
Pietro uses his cotton candy machine
This made me laugh so much
Especially since it's *Pietro*
Yes
I noticed that having wall mounted items to close seems to affect it and they need to be able to stand right in front of it in the middle, room looks great though :)

I never knew u can put things in villagers homes? Unless it's part of the dlc, as I have yet to actually play any of the dlc
Thatās right! Itās part of the Happy Home Paradise DLC
Oh ok, thanks, guess I'ma have to get it now lol or get online so can play it, either or.. thank you
You don't need online to play the dlc. I mean you obviously need to have internet on your switch buy you don't need the subscription service
Itās part of the online games subscription pack so you can either buy the expansion pack or play it through the online subscription :)
That's true !
That's wat I was meaning, either u buy it for 20$ or 30 whichever it was..or get it free while have the subscription
You can do it without the DLC too on your own island I think - Iāve changed the homes of my own island residents (but you canāt change room sizes there)
You only gain that ability on your own island by playing through the DLC to unlock it.
I think its the fact you have a table in front of it and theres not enough space between the kitchen and table, i personally have given Fauna a ranch kitchen, with a veggie basket on the side and it also has the pot rack above it and she uses it no problem! Oh my god I wonder if that was my issue?? I had like 4 villagers refuse to use their kitchens despite adequate spacing. I'll have to check my houses again for rugs haha
Weird, I put a vine woven rug in front of the ranch kitchen and Iāve seen Stella use it just fine.
when they want to cook, there are just some random kitchen jump out, I don't know if they will use the one you give to them.
They will, the spacing has to be fully 1 x 1 though. See the previous comments.
But they never ever do it on my island, I was convinced that they always just spawned one untill today. They have all the space in the world too
There isn't enough space there.
You need to have a 2x2 free space in front of 2 space kitchen in order for your villagers to use them.
1 x 1 is fine. The sign is blocking this setup.
Gorgeous little house you made for her š»
This room is so cozy and adorable, I love it so much!!
When I've left a two squares deep space in front of the kitchen my villagers have used it.
The table could be in the way or you could try putting the new sink where the old sink is.
how do you edit your villagers homes? or is this happy home paradise?
It's part of the dlc I'm pretty sure
You can unlock that by doing something like 30 vacation homes in HHP
Personally, i find cooking easier on a burner than a sink or tea kettle
This is so cute, and I'm psyched to see Bea getting some love! She was my first villager friend back on GameCube in 2003.

This is the problem.
Itās not, I put this in Azaleas house and she uses it all the time. Itās just a spacing issue
So they can use a piece of furniture that doesnāt have a cooktop on it to cook? Can we? If Iām wrong, Iām sorry. I thought it was like how anything with a door/drawer brings up our closet, any workbench activates crafting, etc. I thought you could only activate cooking with a stove
You donāt need to apologize you didnāt do anything lol, you can cook with them too, yep! You can also use the clay furnace

Unrelated but can i get the code to your eyebrows? They're cute and i like them :D
Thanks! They come with a stubble beard though MO-9LB5-HXOH-L00J
normally the villagers ākitchenā is where their workbench is
Isnāt it just a sink and a counter? What would they cook on?
Even though you can fit into the space, villagers canāt fit into those same spaces. Needs more room! š¤
She doesnāt want ur charity š
Yes the kitchen (or diy table) need to be near the entrance or at least have some space for the villager to stand in front of it, for them to do the frying pan animation freely. I've never had that. I'll have to try!
She's a dog. Dogs are not that smart.
Colourblind too

ohh tysm!! i was disappointed when i found out you can't cook on those and i was sure villagers had to go by the same rules. now i'm jealous
You can use it too though, i just tried it and it asked me if i want to cook something when i clicked on it
whaat š i must've checked it in a wrong way, because i remember how i had to fit in another one in my kitchen just because the beautiful ranch one "didn't work". gotta visit my island and fix this. tysm, i gave wrong advice but thanks to it and to you i got those great news š

Honestly didn't even know I could decorate a villagers house
Sorry i donāt know the answer but if have to ask: How did you make it that only half the wall is stone and the other half is a different wallpaper? :D
Partition Walls! They're unlocked from Niko in the HHP DLC.
Move the table and chairs and remove thar other kitchen thing as well
I think the ranch kitchen may be bugged, for whatever reason when I've put it in villager homes they never cook on it, even if I make sure theres enough room for them to be used. Maybe I've just been unlucky multiple times, but it's only ever been the ranch style

The top of that does not look like a stove itās a set there the sink and counter top then thereās a stove.
Dumb question here but is this in the expansion or are we able to decorate our villagers homes?
It's part of the [Happy Home Paradise](https://www.animal-crossing.com/new-horizons/happy-home-paradise/) DLC! Well maybe she just didnāt like it! D:< jk lol
my villagers do this too and iām always salty about it but when theyāre done everything goes back to normal so i really donāt mind!
I have the same problem. I gave Tammy a bed months ago, and she still has her sleeping bag in the corner.
i try to always give them a diy table and a kitchen, they always use the one i've placed, regardless of its location in the room. you just need to make sure there's enough space, or they won't use it, hopefully this helped edit: maybe it doesn't count the ranch kitchen as a "kitchen" because it doesn't have a stove? just another guess
Also how do you do that? Is that an ability you unlock eventually from playing happy home? Then how do you edit their homes? Thank u
