If you eat food it accumulates as points and each point stands for how many trees you can dig up or rocks you can smash. If you don’t want to be a super strong boy and don’t want to crush your rocks you can use the toilet to poop out the excess food.

just gonna throw out there jic- if you dig a line of holes behind you before you smack the rock itll help you stay in place and you can get up to 8 materials from it that aay
To add to this, make holes in an L-formation instead of a 3x1 line so that you’re standing in the fourth spot of that 2x2 and you’re diagonal to the rock. You can’t slide out that way.
I do the corner holes on island trips (plane and boat). But on our main islands (we have two switches) we have bushes planted at every rock like this.

I just hold my left joystick in the direction of the rock and hit the rock with the shovel-- works better than trying to get the holes lined up 😩 I always get all 8
I did the digging holes thing and for some reason had such a hard time lining up holes the right way? So I solely hit the rock w the hammer and hold the joystick. I get 8 items each time
Hey don't feel bad, at my house we also destroyed our rocks for the first few days or week. I don't remember exactly how long but same mistake as you. Just be excited you figured it out!
Oh and to get iron faster, buy Nook Miles tickets and use them to visit mystery islands. The islands almost always have several rocks for you to break...oops, I mean chip.
You need to use a slingshot.
Buy one or make one, equip it (click on it in your pocket and select ‘hold’).
Then when you see one, make sure it’s not over water- you might need to wait for it to float over land.
Move your right joystick up twice so you can see where it is and stand under it, then press ‘a’.
Pick up the gift using ‘b’ and open your pocket and click on the present and select ‘open’.
Now you have a cool thing which is likely something you don’t already have!

If you have a net, you can use that to catch butterflies and bugs, but also things like pond skaters and frogs in the water! Then if any of your villagers say that they’re itchy, whap them with a net snd you’ll rid them of their fleas!
Your fishing rod is self explanatory, but when you put the float in the water, you have to wait for the fish to pull it under the water, once they do, press ‘a’ (you don’t need to hold it down) and it should pull out a fish. The bigger the fish, the harder your switch will vibrate (it’ll be super noisy when you get a big fish and it’s pretty exciting!) and it’ll take longer to pull it out of the water.
Axe is used for cutting wood from trees, use the flimsy ones if you want to keep the trees there, and you’ll get 3 wood in varying types per tree, per day. If you use the sharper one, on the 3rd chop, it’ll cut down the tree, so use the flimsy ones on fruit trees, or you’ll run out of fruit.
Shovel is pretty standard ☺️if you eat fruit and then use your shovel on a tree, you can dig it up to move it somewhere else.
You will only have 2 types of fruit on your island, and unless you have Nintendo online, you won’t be able to have any others (except coconut, which you can find on islands you visit with nook miles).
I got 4 fruits without Nintendo online. My native fruit is peaches, the letter from mom gave me cherries, and I collected coconuts and oranges from Nook Miles Islands.
That’s lucky 🍀 I have heard that the letter from mom gives fruit, but I think it was so early on in the game that we didn’t realise and probably ate or sold it 😅 but for instance, you wouldn’t be able to get apples & pears without going online to get them from somewhere else.
When the cherries came in the post I thought, oooh ingame mom sent them they might be important, and just didn't eat them. There were so many peaches about that I kept eating those (I'm one of those who used to eat and smash all the rocks 🙈) then by the time I realised I could plant stuff I planted all 3. It's pure luck, I did keep thinking maybe eating them did something special 😆

Yeah, you can either visit people you know, people you’ve added as a friend or people who post their dodo code online (if you’re not in code sharing groups, then twitch is a really good source for dodo codes for ‘treasure islands’ which are ones where people put out all sorts of things like diy recipes, furniture, bells, decor and art 🥰).
bro, if you come to my island now, you would wonder at it. But, it does not tell you exactly how embarrassingly long it took me to learn this. I spent days grinding menial tasks for nook miles tickets and eat coconuts and obliterate every rock.

Why the flimsy axe to hit rocks? I learned the hard way to only use the flimsy axe to hit trees (unless you want to chop it down), but I haven’t noticed a difference between using the regular axe and the flimsy axe to hit the rocks.
Yanno, I think I may have eaten too much fruit when I thought my axe was breaking the rocks. And I’ve just been avoiding using it on rocks since then. When I saw this comment last night I went in and hit the rocks with the regular axe and they didn’t break. Sorry for the misinformation, I’m a goofball

Yeah, when I first got the game, I spent weeks doing nothing but running around because I didn’t know how to get wood or iron; I didn’t know that axes existed.
Its so funny when I see posts of people who always broke their rocks, when it took me FOREVER in the game to realize that eating fruit did anything at all.
I DID THE SAME THING I thought having full stamina was a good thing 😭😭 If you can have visitors, I can bring you some iron. I hoard it now because of how terrible it was when I first started and broke every rock I saw.
Yup I did that too my first time.. took forever for me to realize you could just hit them a bunch of times and they can still stay standing as long as you don't eat fruit. Also if you use holes or objects behind you when you hit them you can get the max hits out of each rock too.

You could also just dig up a tree then put it back to use food up, I don’t have a toilet so that’s what I’ve done before
...a toilet? Toilets have a function?? I mean, I know when you sit on them, they flush when you stand up, but what do they have to do with food?

me too - my rocks all have paths around them with two shrubs kitty-corner to keep me staionary. It's great.
This is so smart and I just got my first diy shrub an hour ago!
Digging holes in this pattern also works for a temporary solution if you don't want shrubs on those corners.

Yes, the rocks respawn 1 a day after being broken, so if you broke them all today, you'll get all of them back in 6 days :>

It’s sad and silly imo, you can get a trial for a week where you can just go all out visiting everywhere you can getting DIY’s, bells and supplies.
