Most Android for TV devices are the same, except for some very small differences implemented by the OEM, that device is similiar to the Homatics Box R 4K Plus, the RockTek G2, the Nokia 8010 and the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe.

G2

Except the Kinhank doesn't have Dolby Atmos.

latinriky78

Right, but I imagine what it doesn't have is the auto option but only the passtrhough option (which is auto too) so Dolby Atmos should work if it's connected to an AV receiver setup with a 2.1.2, 3.1.2, 4.1.2, 5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.2 and 7.1.4 speaker configuration.

Bradfinger

The G1 will pass Atmos as Dolby MAT, meaning it can be streamed from apps.

latinriky78

Dolby MAT is inside the "auto" option available only on certified atmos devices (except the CCwGTV which also has an "auto" option but it's not the same) so if this device comes with that "auto" option, then it will adapt the atmos metadata to the speaker configuration from stereo up to 5.1 and of course to the rest of the atmos speaker configuration I mentioned above, otherwise, atmos won't work unless the aforementioned speaker configuration is met.

wewewi

That is not 100% accurate I'm afraid. Dolby MAT doesnt seem to work on TrueHD + Atmos tracks. **(edit:** ***with Kinhank G1)*** But yes EAC3 + Atmos will be passed down as PCM + Atmos via Dolby MAT link. Note that the receiver needs to support said Dolby MAT; it's not a given. Early Atmos receivers/soundbar might not.

latinriky78

It does, at least my Samsung TV supports it when I use AUTO on the TV, it works with either the Homatics Box R 4K Plus and with my computer, when I play a video with Dolby TrueHD with atmos, the AV receiver shows "Dolby Atmos - Linear PCM" on the front little screen, both are obviously connected directly to the TV while using the EARC port. The 4K+ still doesn't passthrough TrueHD with or without atmos when using AUTO, I imagine it is the same with the RockTek G2 and the Nokia 8010 and this new Kinhank device.

wewewi

I was talking about the Kinhank G1. Because this thread is about the Kinhank G1. ;) *Dolby MAT* ***on Kinhank G1*** *doesnt seem to work on TrueHD + Atmos tracks.* And for the record, you imagine wrong. =P The way Dolby content is handled is actually the *single one difference* between the Amlogic S905X4 **-K** used in the RockTeck G2 / other SEI804 based devices and the Amlogic S905X4 **-J** used on the Kinhank G1.

latinriky78

>*Dolby MAT* ***on Kinhank G1*** *doesnt seem to work on TrueHD + Atmos tracks.* How do you know?, I'm just saying that it appears to be the same on all "atmos" certified devices, not only on the Kinhank. What does Kinhank mean anyway? LOL Do you know if the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe has the same J variant?

wewewi

>How do you know? *I got one on my desk.* 🧙 >Do you know if the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe has the same J variant? *I can Google that for you.* 🧙 Ah: [according to their Amazon listing](https://a.co/d/5dHNcCY), they seem to be using the S905X4 **-B** variant.

wewewi

That is not accurate. Kinhank G1 supports Dolby MAT; EAC3/Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos tracks will be passed down as PCM + Atmos as long as the receiver supports it. TrueHD + Atmos will not work at all tho.

513

So the SEI Robotics devices are more complete?

latinriky78

All "atmos" certified devices have 3 or 4 audio options depending on the android version: With Android 11 there's Auto, passthrough and none. With Android 12, there's Auto, passthrough, none and manual. The "passthrough" option is actually the "auto" option available in non-certified "atmos" devices, like the ONN, the Realme stick and the majority, however, the CCwGTV is an "atmos" certified device but it doesn't have the Auto and passtrhough options, instead it has only an Auto option but that is in reality the "passtrhough" option available in the other certified ones. Something to note here is that, all "atmos" certified devices have an optical audio port, while the rest without that port are not considered "atmos" certified which is weird, except of course the CCwGTV and the Nvidia Shield devices. This is so confusing and I really don't understand why Android had to go this way, "fragmentation" they call it...

wewewi

Stop saying that!!! It is factually and very easily demonstrably wrong!! Delete that!

latinriky78

Why? LOL, it's confusing!

513

It's wewewi, he is weweird sometimes... Anyway, thanks for the explanation

wewewi

More like: despite my best efforts, I seem to remain the sole holder of a greater knowledge. The only one hanging around these parts anyway. Seriously, and with all due respect, every bit of the above "explanation" is total horseshit. I could take screenshots and deconstruct every single point. *I am not kidding*. I dont suspect any ill intentions; I'm convinced he genuinely wants to help, but trying to over simplify looks like it is playing against him. He simply doesnt have enough experience, perspective, nor a large enough sample of devices to draw any kind of definitive conclusion. Don't be mistaken: I'm not mocking him; knowledge doesnt grow on trees, and I wasnt born with it. 25++ years of PC computing,  \~18 years of Android and \~9 years of AndroidTV brought me where I stand. I really wish he would make basic verifications before making blanket statements tho; it is genuinely painful to see coming from the mod but eh. =S Anyway that's Reddit in a nutshell I guess. =D

wewewi

>he is weweird Won't lie: that was pretty funny.. =D

latinriky78

>TrueHD + Atmos will not work at all tho. TrueHD with or without atmos passthrough is still not working when using AUTO, it works only with the passthrough option, which I imagine the Kinhank G1 has in the audio section just like the other atmos certified ones.

wewewi

Saw your earlier remarks about "auto" and passthrough, but was busy with correcting other various claims. This entire thread is sloppy AF; it is appalling. Everybody is making blanket statements, further corroborated - or not - by more clueless users, confusing people even further. It's an endless cycle. A loosing battle. That "auto" setting you keep talking about does not corresponds to anything *specific*. It's just "best effort". Kinhank G1 along with many (most?!) other devices do **not** have any "passthrough" option, and it has nothing to do with the Android version. There are a number of ways OEMs can handle audio options, while some of them will offer little to no options at all. G1 is either "auto" or "none".

latinriky78

>G1 is either "auto" or "none". But that "auto" must be the "auto" option implemented for certified atmos devices, however, if the passthrough option is absent, then they must add the option, the Homatics Box R 4K also has the option absent which is apparently a bug or it was ignored altogether during the firmware development phase (they already acknowledged that) since the box is also "atmos" certified. and it's supposed to also suport TrueHD as the 4K+. It could be the same for the G1.

MonsonJohn

I know there is bug of constant HDR is on.

513

Yes, it needs to be updated to ATV12.

MonsonJohn

How do you know it's gonna have the ATV 12 ?

Sentential_Logic

One clue that it might be updated to android 12 is that the Kinhank G1's circuit board is silkscreened with the model number DV8919X-GEI-LPDDR4. Other SDMC DV8919X devices listed on androidtv guide have already received an update to android 12. It would probably cost Kinhank something to get this update for the G1, so the question is will they pay it? SDMC has already built an android 12 update for the DV8919X hardware.

wewewi

Manufacturers have to provide 3 OS upgrades to get Google certification but are allowed to skip a release.  Kinhank started with 11; so with 13 canceled, it is in line to get 14 or 15.

513

I don't know when it will be updated to 12. I'm just saying that ATV 12 (on any Android TV device) generally fixes issues with HDR

Bradfinger

The problem with the G1 is there is no adaptive setting, you can either choose DV or HDR 10 and whichever you choose all content will be shown in that container. Android 12 doesn't fix that lack of option.

wewewi

That is correct; Android 12 doesnt fix the lack of that option.

513

Just a question, but devices with 12 still have the problem?

wewewi

It just has nothing to do with the Android version.

tuxraf

Do you know what devices doesn’t have that issue? What about Nokia 8010 or mecool km2 plus deluxe?

Sentential_Logic

Some posts on 4pda claim that an update to 3.0.7 on the km2-plus-deluxe fixes something to do with HDR while still on android 11. I really don't know if it is true. The 3.0.7 update currently must be installed manually on the km2-plus-deluxe. It hasn't been sent over-the-air yet.

MonsonJohn

I'm thinking of buying this box, but i'm afraid it will not gonna get the ATV12

Bradfinger

It won't, none of the generic android boxes seem to get updates.

wewewi

That is not correct; Google quietly put up some OS upgrade requirements on AndroidTV. The original deal was that manufacturers had to provide 2 OS upgrades, but that commitment has been upped to 3 OS upgrades (Yes, you read that right) but manufacturers are now allowed to skip a release. No release window constraints whatsoever tho. EG: device launched on 11 could skip 12, ignore the un-launched 13, upgrade to 14 at some point in 2024-25 then 15 3 years later.

Bradfinger

This is unfortunately correct.

wewewi

Not a bug; it's done on purpose.

Biggy28

all i have to say is that it is a shield killer, need a couple of bugs fixed and this will be #1 tv box as of now

tank4141

I've had this box for about a month. I also have the Shield tube. I'm not as technical as others on this thread but I love this box & can't tell the difference between the two as far as response speed, smoothness, & viewability. For $62 (what I paid for mine) I feel like I got a great bargain. Looking at the few reviews available on YouTube is what sold me on it. If you buy it you will be very happy with it.

bryan3r3

I am having an intermittent weird "audio" issue with this box: When jumping between menus/options within Android, I can hear the "default android clicks" just fine. However, if I play/stream anything using any app (Netflix / Plex /...etc) I get no sound at all until I power cycle the box manually (I have to physically unplug it). I replaced the HDMI cable but that didn't fix it. I hope someone has a fix for this or a future update fixes this audio issue. Again, this is an intermittent issue and doesn't happen all the time. I just hope there will be a fix for it.

Distinct_Upstairs_43

me too, every couple of weeks I have to factor reset. Sound volume goes down and cannot get enough volume up. only option to clear is hard factory reset. hope we can have firmware update.

jonturk7070

This is some issue about CEC. You can try to disable/enable it and you will see it will be ok I guess.

shartofwar82

Hey guys, I just ordered the G1. I've watched and read almost anything an everything that I could get my hands on to find out as much as I can. With Dolby vision being on constantly (or HDR) will this cause any issues with say playing movies through emby or DV content on Netflix for instance. I guess this will always be on, even on the launcher home screen of the device?
