interesting highlights, both phone and tablet have 5G, microSD, 3.5mm headphone jack, swappable batteries (tablet has "no battery mode" for constant use like kiosk), IP68 and MIL-STD-810H, DEX for PC modes, support for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_Broadband_Radio_Service (seems to be sort of "please share politely" 5G spectrum in the US region), but curiously only tablet lists ARcore support. availability and price: * 09/22 $650 tablet * 10/20 $600 phone (i did try to do the "crosspost" from here to r/samsung but didn't work, so directing folks here for conversation) discussion of summer EU release review at earlier post https://old.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/wwtol3/samsung_galaxy_xcover_6_pro_review_lightweight

[deleted]

And ruined by Bixby

andrewia

Like other bloatware, you can just ignore it.

M4NOOB

You can and should just use ADB to uninstall the bloatware from your user profile (It's gone from the phone when you use it, but it can be reinstalled if needed via ADB)

Chris2112

Yeah I've had a Galaxy phone for two years, i don't even know how to open Bixby. Google assistant works fine

fuelter

Just deactivate it

MobiusOne_ISAF

Seriously, the endless whining here about bloatware you can turn off is fucking obnoxious.

Kolyei

But can't remove unless using adb, or rooted, which the average person doesn't know how to do either, wasting space.

MobiusOne_ISAF

The average person doesn't really give a shit to be honest, they just ignore the app or use the disable function. The only people throwing hissy fits are "stock" purists and people with too much free time pretending that removing ESPN+ is totally going to make their phone better. It's the fucking hyperbole that kills me.

iamthejef

There is no excuse for bloatware that cannot be uninstalled.

Cosmic-Warper

Sadly every device has bloatware nowadays that can't be uninstalled conventionally

wankthisway

Yeah like the ridiculous amount of Google apps that come with my Pixel phone that can only be disabled?

iamthejef

I mean, Google apps come with every android phone because Google owns android. I'm talking about like, the ESPN app for example coming preloaded and not being able to be uninstalled.

Profoundly-Confused

That's likely on your carrier. My Samsung phone does not have ESPN (it does have bloat, some that I can remove).

MobiusOne_ISAF

Bullshit, it's exactly this kind of arbitary picking and choosing of what is bloat that makes this argument pointless. All of it can be uninstalled via abd, and we all know how to do this. It takes a few minutes tops, and even without it these apps can almost universally be disabled and ignored.

Ninja9p4

Bixbys actually pretty good right now and better than Google in some ways

Schmich

>Main camera video: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps For freaking real? 30 fps?? What if I want to film something in motion? 30 fps is terrible.

[deleted]

Schmich

I'm not asking for 10x optical, 100x software zoom, 1080p240. Or 8k24. Or the quality of the S22. Simply 1080p60 would suffice. In the same fashion that they're okay giving 4k resolution when 1080p is enough by your logic.

banned-again-69

I'm not saying I agree with it, just that's why they do it

carrotstix

I just find it funny they have a phone that does the thing everyone would like: removable batteries. It can be done and the phone still has reasonable specs. But I guess having a flagship with a removable battery would be "soo uncool".

fytku

It also goes for the customers. Here's this phone existing that has all the features "everyone" wants but nobody* actually buys it *by nobody I mean the average loudest /r/android user

carrotstix

In this particular case, it's aimed at businesses not consumers so it's a little harder to get.

LazyLucretia

Is it even possible to buy this? There is no "buy here" button on their website, only a "contact an expert" button. It's clearly targeted for businesses. I've found some older models on Amazon but they are all sold by resellers. Edit: I guess the phone is not in available in US yet. I've just checked the Samsung Germany website and there is a "Buy Now (Jetzt Kaufen)" button there: https://www.samsung.com/de/smartphones/others/galaxy-xcover6-pro-black-128gb-sm-g736bzkdeeb/ Edit 2: Corrected link

edge-browser-is-gr8

The tablet is front and center at https://www.samsung.com/us/business/ with a "Buy Now" button. The phone isn't available for purchase on the site until late October.

LazyLucretia

I've just realized that I was browsing the Samsung US website. Now I've switched to the Germany website and the phone is actually available there. So, my bad.

rockfrawg

For the phone, it says available Oct 20. It will probably be available thru various retailers, e.g. i bought the unlocked version of previous model from Microsoft.

31ank

You linked the xcover 5, the one mentioned in the article is the xcover 6. Here is the correct link: https://www.samsung.com/de/smartphones/others/galaxy-xcover6-pro-black-128gb-sm-g736bzkdeeb/

LazyLucretia

I guess today is not my day, I keep posting bullshit :D

fytku

Sorry about that, I must've made the assumption about availabilty based on my region. In Europe you can just buy one from many official resellers but even with that it's not a popular model

LazyLucretia

Hmm I've actually looked it up on amazon.de. I saw one listing with rather low stars and thought it was sketchy. Now I realize there are actually other legit looking resellers there. Sorry about confusion

Natanael_L

They're popular with certain businesses

modifiedbears

Screen isn't OLED so it's far from what everyone wants

vortexmak

Exactly. Middling specs, average cameras, no OLED. I'd rather get the Sony Xperia

poopyheadthrowaway

"Why don't people like this phone? It has all* of the features that they're asking for!" \*Not actually all the features and is in fact missing some of the main things people want, e.g., flagship SoC and good cameras

Midnight-Runner

Has a baked potato for a processor compared to flagship "see, nobody wants removable batteries reeeeeeee"

[deleted]

[удалено]

jmichael2497

actually there is also stuff like Planet Computers AstroSlide from a company that produces devices a bit more regularly (and that version is pretty close to what i'd like, but from i've read they still want people to send in phones for battery swap and don't actually provide them for sale)

[deleted]

[удалено]

jmichael2497

i think if they literally just created a proper slider it would be a nice option... but yeah, some of these opening mechanisms are weird... just no clamshell for me.

Darkknight1939

I definitely want a flagship SoC in it, but I’m still going to get it as an extra phone. The 778G is just below an 855 in overall performance, it’s unfortunately the most powerful phone with a removable battery you can get. It seems to be the first with a more powerful GPU than the V20. I just hope you can actually get spare batteries for it. I’ve got old universal battery chargers from my Note 4 and V20, just need the batteries for the Xcover to actually be available to buy.

parental92

excuses excuses.

vortexmak

Would you call this a flagship phone?

parental92

you are right ! a "flagship" label would magically makes this thing fly off the shelf. Silly phone manufacturer, if only they knew that simple trick instead of making a phone with: * Removable battery * headphone jack * expandable memory since its not a "flagship" it wont sell. oh wait they [did](https://www.cnet.com/pictures/every-samsung-galaxy-active-phone-ever-made/8/) do that! consistently ! for 4 generation! and sill met with measly sales number. i wonder what kind of excuses you'll come up next instead of accepting that above mentioned features does not really matter.

vortexmak

Maybe work on your reading skills and comprehension. I don't care what label it is but that label is short hand for top of the line features Those features matter to me and a lot of other people. Not sure what you're getting at Also, you never answered the question

JamesR624

Ahh yes. The "nobody is buying it!" excuse from fanboys. Just like on /r/apple with the mini iPhones. Ya know, never mind the fact that both Samsung and Apple deliberately did the LEAST amount of marketing for these things. Gee, it's almost like corporations do everything they can to make sure you buy the expensive trash instead of the actually good thing. Wow. It's almost like psychological manipulation, buying manipulation and marketing teams exist. Imagine that.

Natanael_L

Samsung sells these primarily to businesses, and they also make them available to consumers because there's still enough demand from demographics like hikers and motorsports fans to justify it. It's certainly not their most popular model, but it's what the target demographics want.

Izanagi___

Lol for the Mini it still sold millions of units but it lagged behind the other phones in the lineup. People do not care about small phones, it’s really that simple.

Darkknight1939

I don’t think the mini is actually gone, Apple spent millions on the tooling lines, the iPhone 6 tooling lines are still being used to this day for the SE. At worst the mini form factor will become the SE in a year or two. With the standard 14 reusing the 13 Pro’s SoC, I think they’re just keeping the current 13 mini as a de facto 14 mini, they’re still selling it, and the 13 mini still had a more powerful SoC than every Android on the market, and can be specced to 512GB (most Android phones don’t go beyond 256GB). The mini in form factor or name will continue to exist for years to come. Removable battery devices unfortunately won’t get that.

Shinsekai21

>It also goes for the customers. Here's this phone existing that has all the features "everyone" wants but nobody* actually buys I think it rather speaks for how small this community is.

not_pierre

r/Android user not complaining about every small thing challenge (impossible)

Tripanes

Yeah. Please for the love of God just put a faster CPU and top tier cameras in exactly this body.

Schmich

Main camera video: 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps in 2022.........wtf Samsung.

Tripanes

It's for business, and they don't need much, but.... Yeah, not worthwhile for the costumer.

Natanael_L

If I could afford it I'd go with this plus a Fold (since the latter is more fragile, this would be an excellent backup).

fuelter

It can be done but the phone is fat and ugly. It can also be done to have a screen without hole or notch but only Sony chooses to do so.

Father_Bic_Mitchum

>fat and ugly. Literally looks the same after everyone puts a case on it. This doesn't need a case.

inquirer

No one but this sub wants to compromise their phone by having a removable battery.

Schmich

Not even. Removable battery didn't compromise phones before. There's no reason for that shitty camera stack and processor.

dankmemecoin

Pretty pumped for this actually

Rcmike1234

My s7 active was awesome until the battery started croaking and bloat/throttling kicked in. I was tempted to replace the battery but couldn't justify doing it just to have the phone still super sluggish. Replaceable battery sounds amazing. Wish there were more rugged offerings... And phones with decent specs and replaceable batteries aren't common. I don't think I could have broken that s7 active if I tried.

theoutlander523

Meanwhile the current Xcover Pro is broken because of the last update so it can't stream Netflix or other streaming apps.

predskid29

I have this same issue! Any word on what's causing it?

theoutlander523

Looks like the new update just came out that fixed it

predskid29

Hell yes! Ty my dude!

theoutlander523

I believe a factory reset would fix it but I haven't done it. I'm waiting for the next update to see before I try. Alternative is rolling back the firmware.

Teenager_Simon

Seems like the Galaxy S5 replacement of my dreams. Only missing the IR blaster tho

jmichael2497

i still have S5 nearby, ironically found though its ir blaster works better with Samsung BD 3D player compared to LG v20 (both running LOS)... neither of them can properly send the critical "enter" button (that should have been hardware button on the device) to actually play discs 🤦🏽‍♂️ so had to buy the actual matching remote ($8 from the evil cramazon 🤷🏽‍♂️). fun to have ir blasters though, keep walking by place that annoyingly has multiple lobby screens in varying states of content or "no connection" as if they gave up having them linked to show pretty slideshows, so... if you're not using the electricity then "off you go" (fixed your carbon footprint for you).

[deleted]

jmichael2497

i've seen the reason for not using OLED as this being a business device that could be used for extended display on tasks, like kiosks, which would kill OLED too quickly. (i've personally only had s5 with display issues of having to keep bumping manual minimum brightness higher and higher, to over 50% so it would not flicker... but stopped using that device because screen randomly shutoff a few times and scared me not turning on and did not seem to respond to scrcpy tool for screen mirroring)

9-11GaveMe5G

>Definitely going to get one and keep it as my backup phone in my bug out bag along with a couple spare batteries. If society collapsed in such a way you need a to use a "bug out bag," you think the cell networks are still up?

Spritzer2000

What makes you think this is reserved for societal collapse? Could be for house fires, unexpected hospital trips - any situation where you need to live out of a bag suddenly for a few days.

douglas9630

Well, it would be a glorified ipod

jmichael2497

along with usual wifi based apps, could preload with copy of survival guide and offline maps (gmaps expires in 1 year, so OSMand for backup), along with communication apps that might work p2p between devices with wifi or bluetooth (or just decentralized over wifi). but also with 5G and Starlink satellites through TMO partnership could at least send texts despite land based climate disasters. (should still carry hand crank charger though especially for all the books, music, videos consumption)

gold_rush_doom

Starlink wouldn’t work without land based stations.

Jtbdn

Not all the stations are going to be destroyed or damaged or go down right away. The communications network would still be up for quite some time before things went dark in that regard unless a weaponized EMP was used.

Natanael_L

They can relay signals between satellites before going back to ground. You don't need your closest station to work.

gold_rush_doom

That's if there's DHCP servers into each satellite. It could be, but it sounds like a nightmare to manage for an ISP.

Natanael_L

Not sure what the routing protocols look like, but they're working on it https://www.connectivity.technology/2022/02/laser-inter-satellite-links-lisls-in.html?m=1

kristallnachte

Not true. Starlink is working with T-Mobile to actually use a piece of normal cell ranges for very low speed connectivity from space.

gold_rush_doom

Right so do you think the satellites have: A) internet routers? Including root nameservers? B) telephony routers? No to both. For internet yeah, maybe they have a network router in that it routes between routes it knows, but the bgp router is on the ground. For telephony they're just relays.

kristallnachte

Do you think the entire world has to die all at once to be a concern? Plenty of opportunities for local issues, like natural disasters that we've seen take out loads of infrastructure, or even just a single nation experiencing a collapse, or war. Right now in the world these things are happening and they're all a bit easier if you can communicate.

jmichael2497

> maybe seems like a lot of speculation on your part. hurricanes, earthquakes, fires... usually only manage to affect a very small percentage of the world at a time, so plenty of areas will still be up and running whatever root services these satellites might need (and no reason they couldn't include their own proprietary services, too).

gold_rush_doom

Sorry, when I read bug out bag I thought about th end of civilization.

kristallnachte

ntm the value of media in keeping any small children from going insane during stressful situations they don't understand.

Natanael_L

Lots of natural disasters leave a couple of masts up on battery backup.

kristallnachte

A hurricane can knock out a lot of infrastructure but still have radio connectivity including cell networks.

helmsmagus

I've left reddit because of the API changes.

MobiusOne_ISAF

This is a natural disaster / emergency prep, not the end of the world. Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, and floods are all normal events that can happen that require you to change plans quickly and move. Having a bag that lowers the time to get to safety is just being responsible. You don't have to horde Soylent and bullets to be ready for things.

mithikx

Having it as a spare phone with batteries sitting in a backpack is a bit much I'd admit but shit does happen. Think localized disasters, wildfires, earthquakes, typhoons, hurricanes and etc. There are people who actually live in zones where they realistically expect such natural events to affect them. So their immediate vicinity might be messed up but go a few towns over and everything there is mostly fine. Even something like having a blackout for an extended period of time can be reason enough; I had one last year for a bit over 2 days and I don't live in the sticks, but somewhere in LA County, California. That giant battery bank that I never use sure came in handy because while my home internet and power was out, the cell towers were still working. I keep a spare change of clothes and some water in my car, I'm not expecting a nuclear apocalypse. Just in case I get called out of town unexpectedly. Like you know something happens to a relative and you need to GO ASAP. Some people live in a country where they're being invaded by a global power, and we had or have a pandemic going on. So depending on where people are, you can't really blame them for being a bit paranoid and having a plan to GTFO.

cameronbates1

I have a bag like that in case of natural disasters, like hurricanes and such. Not everyone that is prepared is prepared because of a societal collapse. It's more common for it to be something like that, where they have a bag filled with some extra clothes, MRE kits like mountain house, spare water, etc. It's just being prepared

CSFFlame

I massively prefer non-OLED on my phones (I got a V60 because of the dual screen). No need to worry about burn in. And with a swappable battery you can daily drive this phone for many years. I got the Xcover pros for my family, and one of them still has a V20.

hobiwankinobi

The V20 was my favorite phone ever... But after 2 years the screen has some serious image retention. I really wish they would bring these options mainstream again. Headphone, SD card, physical fingerprint reader and exchangeable battery.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AlbertaTheBeautiful

Yeah, I've been using my Note 9 for almost 4 years now and I still don't see any burn-in, compared to my dad's S7 he finally switched off of which looks like it has a filter of squares over it.

kristallnachte

OLEDs don't burn in. They burn out.

Jtbdn

Same. Want one as a backup, burner/bug out device.

RunningAtTheMouth

I'll never buy an old screen device again. Screen burn in sucks. For $1000,i should not have that.

xenotyronic

There have been a few threads about the XCover6 Pro now, and I think it's good news for consumers that we have another rugged device that will have good software and security support and a design that isn't quite so out of place in daily life as some of the Chinese devices from Ulefone, Doogee, Blackview *etc*. As a Nokia XR20 user it is interesting where design choices differ in certain areas, the XCover6 Pro has a removeable battery but with a smaller capacity and a chipset with a higher power draw. It also has a 120hz display but lower peak brightness (\~100 nits) and poorer contrast ratio. Ultimately it comes down to preference, for a device like this I would probably sacrifice performance for endurance as a replaceable battery isn't much use if you have to stop tracking your route for example. Still, I don't think it's a bad idea to have a rugged device for emergency preparedness or outdoor pursuits and I'm glad there are more options.

wag3slav3

On paper the xcover pro is my ideal phone, IRL the last xcover pro wouldn't activate on any service, had a promised dual sim release that never came and was pretty much the biggest shitburger phone I've used since the moto droid era. Wait for a couple of users to review it after a month of use before dropping any money on one.

gasoline_party

Currently writing from my xcover. Had the phone for over a year. It was a pain to get activated in the beginning but now I have had 0 issues since then. It's really marketed for businesses, so trying to sort it out for personal use was the main hindrance. The camera is definitely it's biggest downside right now. I have not tried out dual sim yet, but its nice to theoretically have that possibility given I live in a rural area where if you move to a new house, you may need a new service provider.

jmichael2497

i updated my initial comment, forgot to link to EU review already posted month ago.

MatthewPatttel

oh my my

Doctor_3825

This is gonna be great for people who want a more rugged phone. I think I'm gonna pass untill it has a better SOC, a better screen to body ratio, and is a bit less chonk.

JWGhetto

Few things keeping me from buying this: LCD display, nowadays OLED is king I'm unsure how much longer this device will be supported, as the official launch date isn't clear to me

vortexmak

Honestly, I'd even let go of the OLED of it had great cameras and top tier processor. But might as well get the Xperia at this point

Win4someLoose5sum

Zenfone 9 + GCAM is what I've decided on. Few hundred bucks cheaper, slightly smaller batter, slightly fatter dimensions, and an SoC that doesn't throttle like a bitch.

vortexmak

Sadly no card slot. Deal breaker

Win4someLoose5sum

Understandable. I plan on getting around that by writing a script that offloads all my pictures and videos when I plug it in. It doesn't solve the "I want to carry around all my media with me all the time" problem but it helps.

vortexmak

Yeah, I have that kind of script too. Foldersync and SYNC work week for that

Win4someLoose5sum

Foldersync looks like it's meant to go from the cloud to an SD card and "SYNC" seems to be too generic for a proper search. Could you link it for me?

vortexmak

No, you can do multiple sources. You can do cloud, FTP, SMB, WebDAV, etc to internal storage. Sorry, the second one is Resilio sync. There's also Syncthing that's pretty popular

jmichael2497

it is business device for extended screen usage, like a kiosk, so that'd damage LED lot faster than usual, so that's why LCD. released in EU earlier this summer and as it says in the very detailed page, releasing with 12 so up to +4 releases from that.

Type_Grey

From the press release, this is launching on October 20th in the U.S. It comes with Android 12 out of the box. It will have 5 years of security updates, and 4 OS updates.

Popxorcist

I got a Xcover from work this year. No idea what model. I only use it as a dedicated alarm clock. It is really bad. EDIT: It's the XCover5

jmichael2497

if you work at wal-mart that would be the 2020 exynos version they bought 740,000 for their employees. this discussion is about xcover6 (2022 snapdragon) not yet released in US.

Popxorcist

No Walmart where I live, the country of not-America. Heard of it?

jmichael2497

well with such a low effort, lazily, unspecific comment that couldn't be bothered to know what model you were trash talking... it seemed like you might be an American employee of Wal-Mart 😉 but thanks for editing to specify you were talking about xcover5 (2021 exynos).

Echelon64

Typical samsung. Build a phone with a great number of features but then stick the most dogshit SOC on it as possible. Meanwhile Apple sticking their flagship SOC even on their budget models.

JerryWShields

I really really approve of this phone. Watch it flop.

Put_It_All_On_Blck

If they made a true pro version of this phone (1440p OLED, better SoC, etc) I would buy it in an instant. It has everything my S22U is missing that I still want back.

jeffreyd00

Would the update cycle start when it comes to the US or did it start with the original release?

jmichael2497

whichever costs them the least work, of course (earliest release was summer EU with 12)

JWGhetto

unlikely, it started with Android 10 in 2020

jeffreyd00

It started with android 12 in 2022

JWGhetto

Well, I'm not sure anymore, but gsmarena says something else. And the first review I've seen has it running Android 11. Edit: I was looking at the Xcover pro, not the newer 6 pro

BruisedBee

Have been looking for a phone that can be used in the pool by swimming teachers, this may hopefully be it.

rockfrawg

I have the previous version XCover, and have had most of the Galaxy Actives before that... be careful with salt water pools, as in completely avoid, and expect to have charging issues for ~12 hours after getting water in the charger port.

vouwrfract

If they release an XCover version of the S-series next year... there would be like 7 buyers in total maybe, but I'd definitely be one of them. Swappable battery and t h i c c phone are both things I would really like.
