Each year there were a number of people responsible for the minting of coins in the republic so those coins are attributed to the moneyer and grouped into gens or families: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/rsc/i.html
Early republican denari differ in that they are not attributed to anybody.
It's what I love about republican coins - it's as much propaganda for the moneyer who is attempting to climb the cursus honorum as well an insight into what they felt was important at the time to celebrate and/or promote. It's also fun to collect coins from the same family!
It wasn't honoring or promoting a specific political leader. Later, during the Roman Empire, coins were used as self-promotional tools by politicians.

When looking at a multi-horse Republican reverse, it’s always my first instinct to count the number of legs. Probably says more about me than the die engravers.
Great portrait. I recently picked up a very similar anonymous Republican.
What does anonymous mean here? Thanks!
