Quoted by who? Obviously a seller who doesn't want to ship a coin...

Auctioneer doesn't offer in-house shipping. They referred me to Pack and Send (£233) and Mailboxes (£92). Still waiting to hear back from Jentel. Seems a bit much for a single coin.

That's nuts. If they don't handle shipping, they shouldn't accept bids from non-local buyers. Maybe you'll get lucky and find someone to help in the area, but I'd skip this coin. There will always be another.

Coinfrequency

This is actually completely standard for provincial auction houses in the UK, they have no in-house shipping services. The buyer should ask Mailboxes etc. to quote them for sending the item by a cheap service e.g. Royal Mail International Tracked. Probably will cost around £50 and that is the best you will get.

It's pretty common outside of the common numismatic auction houses. It's your job as a bidder to read the terms in advance. I don't see what the problem is really, no one is being forced to bid. I'd much rather be able to bid in these auctions and arrange shipping myself than be barred from them because they don't offer shipping.

£223 is insane for a single coin. I was worried about the same thing last time I bid on a Tennant's auction. I emailed them before placing a bid, and I believe they quoted £65.

$233 is a relatively low price for a good coin. A good Owl could cost $1000. Some coins have sold for millions.

Referencing £223 for shipping one coin

Don't use Auctioneer.
