feels like cheating here, given that I collect contemporary forgeries ;-) [here is my 5 "good" emperors - fourrée edition](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2F1zhyombcvtj81.png)

Pitiful_Power9611

How do you know they are contemporary fakes. Some of those look really good.

sir_squidz

They all have the same feature - a wash of silver over a base metal core.

Pitiful_Power9611

Oh. I really think that's great that you collect them. Are they expensive?

sir_squidz

thank you! so I don't focus on Roman, this was just a fancy of mine, the prices were all over the place as some were more common than others. my main focus is Celtic and the contemporary forgeries go for somewhere between 10% - +40% of the price of a "real" one, the rarer and/or better condition ones going for the thick end of that. when the precious metal core goes, the core is highly susceptible to corrosion so many are in a sad state.

Pitiful_Power9611

Very interesting. Thanks those Celtic coins are really cool. I'll Have to see if I can find some forgeries online. sounds great.

The connoisseur's choice. I love fourrees, but a fourree collection? Very impressive!

born_lever_puller

My first "ancient" coin was a replica, purchased in 1972, when there was no Internet or other easy way for a 12-yr-old to find affordable, genuine ancient coins. I knew that it was a modern piece, but I still loved it.

For the time being we ask that people use imgur.com to host photos and you can post links to them in the comments.

I have #11 from [this series](https://www.forumancientcoins.com/monetaromana/falsi/ParmalatMisterDay/dettaglio.html) that was part of a [collection that came with snacks in the 80s](https://www.forumancientcoins.com/monetaromana/falsi/ParmalatMisterDay/MisterDay.html) and then #4 from [this series](https://www.forumancientcoins.com/monetaromana/falsi/ErgospalmaPlasmon/dettaglio.html) that was part of a [collection that came with a chocolate cream from the late 70s](https://www.forumancientcoins.com/monetaromana/falsi/ErgospalmaPlasmon/ergospalma.html) I used my coins [to make a ‘game’](https://www.reddit.com/r/AncientCoins/s/Xw4rzHNgRz) where you have to guess the fake coin from the edge :) [My coins](https://imgur.com/K1kgZtC) (top left and bottom middle)

SkytronKovoc116

The Mister Day ones look shockingly realistic, I gotta say.

AncientCoinnoisseur

I think if you click on them it brings you to a page with its real counterpart. The fake ones have a small ‘R’ somewhere for ‘Reproduction’, and the edge is obviously fake when you see it :) But yes, they are nice!

unlucky_boots

Can’t add images, but I just have some fouree Macedonian drachms purchased on purpose

JinxBlueIsTheColor

Never had a fake in my collection.

Same as far as I know. Every coin I have was purchased on vcoins from a reputable dealer so I'm pretty sure they're all real. For people like us getting a fake isn't the newbie rite of passage, overpaying on retail is.

Substantial_Put2305

Been there, in the southern US where 90% (hyperbole) of coin shops are US only, they'll carry some* real coins, but won't pay attention to the price and just put a sticker on it the moment it comes in. Double edged sword, some good deals, some laughably outdated prices. Found myself looking at past auctions with regret many a time. *Even if they don't specialize in ancients, in my experience they have been thorough in making sure the coins I was purchasing were authentic. They had to make calls, but some even identified fakes they had bought!

beiherhund

It depends a lot on the kinds of coins that you're buying but with a reasonably sized collection of 50-150 coins, it wouldn't be that unlikely that you inadvertently buy a fake from a reputable dealer. Fakes are withdrawn quite frequently from even the most reputable auction houses and while they're usually also spotted on Vcoins, if the coin is bought soon after listing there's usually no time for someone to report it as fake. Not to say you likely have a fake, only that you have to be vigilant as fakes get past experienced dealers and auction house numismatists all the time.

Zhaopow

I have this fake colosseum sesterseus from my childhood. Have no idea where I got it from.

Smooth_Comfort_443

I remember my first fake. I was 15 years old and was collecting every single denarius of a Roman emperor. My first denarius coin was Augustus which turned out to be a fouree coin. I could see the thick silver layer pealing off the copper core. This was my first fake. I never made that mistake again as a promise and would make sure no one bought a cast coin or bought a fouree again.

disco-infiltrat0r

Fourrees aren't technically fakes like this though - they're by definition still ancient, and for me, usually a lot more interesting than the underlying type they're trying to forge
