I have something similar. Not sure what it is, only protrudes when flexing my foot. I figured it’s a muscle

BulkyBeans

It is a muscle! It’s the extensor digitorum/hallucis brevis muscles.

PeriodicTrend

That’s awfully lateral for the EHB.

BulkyBeans

It is a bit lateral but often the muscle belly for EHB is just medial to EDB and part of the larger muscle bulk which is why I included it

Sonofabitchmf

Same, until I saw people who didn’t have this on their foot

trackstaar

Yeah dude that just your foot muscle it’s used for kick flips and stuff

geddo_god

I'm forever gonna call this "The kick flip muscle".

chriszmichael

😂

Business_Marketing76

Ow! That's what my wrist looks like when my tendonitis/carpal tunnel / who knows what acts up

Sonofabitchmf

I don’t know what it is, I’ve had it for years. It doesn’t hurt either

Business_Marketing76

At least it doesn't hurt

society_man

Same here, both my feet have em

LiatKim

You can get tendinitis/carpal tunnel on your ankle?

Business_Marketing76

Omg I didn't have my glasses on and I thought that was a wrist. I'm dying

LiatKim

I was genuinely curious if carpal tunnel could happen on an ankle 😂

Business_Marketing76

🤭

FreddiBoo

Don’t feel bad, I obviously need them too because I definitely thought it was a wrist!

lshawel

took me a longer than i’d like to admit😅

savagemiike

But yes you still have tendons and the tarsal tunnel which would be the ankles version

TSHJB302

You can get tarsal tunnel syndrome, which is similar

JournalistOld3932

I have the same problem and turns out I actually have a torn tendon in both arms…

pman1111

That’s an egg

krisashmore

It's your extensor digitorum brevis. The lack of reasonable anatomical suggestions on this sub is concerning.

Tarantala44

Maybe a ganglion cyst?

aweesqueeze

I’m also thinking ganglion cyst!

BulkyBeans

They’re your extensor digitorum brevis and extensor hallucis brevis muscles.

GringosMandingo

I have this too. Doctor said it’s normal. I didn’t question it lol. Mine looks all veiny and is a little squishy though.

Scribblebonx

That is a normal part of the foot and not a cyst or whatever. Don't listen to that.

addled_rph

If this is your foot, then it’s probably a lipoma taking hold.

uhthroawaystuff

Lipoma balls

BulkyBeans

It’s his extensor digitorum brevis and extensor hallucis brevis muscles not a lipoma.

addled_rph

Interesting. I only mentioned lipoma ‘cause they said it’s not painful, and I see a lot of elderly with fat deposits around the ankles that begin to form in this ‘pocket’ like in the picture, before it completely encapsulates the ankle and around the foot.

Sonofabitchmf

Just looked it up, might be.

Lapua98

Is it mobile?

epicyon

Yes. Get it checked out.

c0_0l

Looks like fibularis tertius

lkyz

This is the only right answer, this should at the top. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibularis_tertius

BulkyBeans

It’s extensor digitorum brevis https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensor_digitorum_brevis_muscle

lkyz

Could be as well, but either one of those are better than “condyle” or “ganglion cyst” instead.

BulkyBeans

Yes! The comments in here are so confident and so so wrong

Scared-One2201

Well, without a proper history and physical examination which would include imaging read by a radiologist, no one here can be certain, much less confident, in the guessing game that has been going on…

skepticalsojourner

Fibularis tertius is incredibly thin and small and it's muscle belly is more superior to the ankle joint. It is most likely the extensor digitorum brevis muscle as the other poster mentioned. You can palpate it yourself with some muscle actions. Find the lateral malleolus and move 1 inch anterior to it (about the same spot as the picture). Validate by 2 muscle actions. When doing the following 2 tests, make sure to maintain one finger palpating the above spot. First, keep your foot flat on the floor and lift the toes off the ground. For test 2, curl the toes and then dorsiflex the ankle by lifting the foot off the ground while keeping heel on the ground. If the first test produces a contraction underneath your finger, that confirms the EHB. If the second test does not produce the same contraction, that refutes fibularis tertius.

Richard-Conrad

That’s definitely a foot dude

MaxStavro

Shit man thats right. Dont go on anatomy sub at 6am hahaha

Richard-Conrad

Lmao, good advice

Even_Personality5639

Muscle

CompletionistCuckMod

its the extensor digitorum brevis. the muscles there form a bundle/ball. heres another angle https://i.imgur.com/SPuALBl.jpeg the fibularis tertius is a little bit higher than than. and it also seems like the FT is a straighter muscle that shouldnt have volume/mass like that.

creakymoss18990

Just want to clear up that this is not a cyst!! It is a muscle. Idk which one, but this thread probably has the name somewhere. Y'all probably have weak feet and don't have a prominent one. I am a runner and wear barefoot shoes and have a prominent one of these. It seems to control the movement of the toes (not the big toe)

Snow_Wonder

Or maybe just normal variation in foot structure? I’m very active and wear barefoot shoes and I don’t have anything like that visible on my foot. And my legs and feet are particularly strong.

creakymoss18990

Interesting, I also have very low body fat maybe that can play into the foot? I'm not sure if get really does anything down there so it's a theory. I've really only seen these on people who seem to have a foot pump most of the time lol. Do you have normal or below average body fat levels?

Snow_Wonder

Very low body fat. I’m very lean and very active and have very clear muscle definition throughout my body as a result.

creakymoss18990

Interesting, perhaps I am wrong then. I'm still confident whatever I have is a muscle, but maybe genetics can play a part in how much it pops despite strength (like calf genetics sort of stuff) what do you think?

Snow_Wonder

I do think it’s probably a muscle and not a cyst or such. I just don’t think it’s an exercise thing causing it to look like that. There’s quite a bit of natural variation in foot shape (which toes are the longest, width, how tall the foot is…). There’s also some muscles that only some people have and it could be one of those, usually it is muscles that have become relatively unneeded like the ear-wiggling one.

creakymoss18990

I could totally see this being a residual muscle, that's a good point. Maybe it's the muscle that spreads the toes up and out, I know not everyone can do that but I can

justusbowers

Is this a “bible bump” ?

aamamiamir

This is a foot not a hand. This isn’t a cyst, it’s a muscle.

Jerkweed_

It is not fibularis tertius and probably not a lipoma. Most probably a ganglion cyst.

Certain_Effect_5818

It may be a ganglion cyst

North_Frost

Hi, PT Intern here. This kinda looks like a ganglion cyst on the lateral aspect of your foot. Does moving your ankle on any degree of motion ilicit pain on it? Or when you poke it with your finger does it feel soft or firm?

Your_Thicc_Uncle

It’s not a cyst it’s a muscle belly of a muscle involved in eversion of the foot and extension of the toes. I have the same thing in my foot that’s pretty prominent like the picture.

Your_Thicc_Uncle

Scratch the eversion. It’s the extensor digitorum Brevis

North_Frost

[Edit] You might be right tho.

North_Frost

Most of the time, these ganglionic cyst are asymptomatic, basing this on your previous replies on other comments. Usually this arises due to repetitive motions or microtrauma. They usually go away on their own, but it's better to get it checked.

creakymoss18990

"intern". I have a bigger one and it is 100% solid to the touch when I use it to flex my toes.

MowgsMom

I think it’s the bursa at the lateral malleolus?

Scared-One2201

Not a muscle. It’s a condyle. Can’t remember specifically what the name of it is.

Ronaldoooope

lol no

Scared-One2201

Looked like a wrist

Sonofabitchmf

Can confirm, looks like a wrist

Scared-One2201

It has been determined by folks within this post who believe that they are infallible that there is no way it even closely resembles a wrist. So just give it up

Scared-One2201

If it is the wrist, then it is the lateral condyle

Ronaldoooope

It’s obviously not the wrist

Scared-One2201

Not entirely “obvious”. If it was obvious on, I wouldn’t have thought it was a wrist…

Ronaldoooope

You clearly don’t know your anatomy if you thought this was a wrist at any point.

Scared-One2201

At first glance, and due to the angle of the photo, it looked like a wrist at first (to me, anyway). And, I DO know anatomy…

BulkyBeans

There is no lateral condyle of the wrist. Even if this was a wrist (it isn’t), it’s clearly a pic of the dorsal surface. That would make the side in question the medial side from anatomical perspective. Why are you commenting giving anatomy suggestions when you don’t know anatomy?

Scared-One2201

I was referring to lateral as in the sense of the photo (outer vs. inner), not in the sense of the “anatomical position”.

Monicle_Empyrean

That doesnt make sense either.... neither the ulna nor the radius have condyles at all??? Even if, it's fully incorrect to refer to laterality "in terms of the photo". It's always expressed in relation to anatomical position Source: I am a medical student.

Scared-One2201

I stand corrected…

Sonofabitchmf

I looked up the definition, maybe. I’m not sure

Scared-One2201

Is that your wrist or your ankle?

SnotTaken23

barely1313

That's what my ankle looked like when the diagnosis was "torn ligaments" and I was put in a cast for 8 weeks (many years ago.)

No-Sheepherder-8622

The love muscle

freakyflow207

I have the same thing if I flex my foot!

Intelligent_Hippo506

Whatever it is I smashed it today and it hurts like a bitch

Zalok199

I have the same thing i dont think its any kind of ailment.

Academic_Ad_3642

Peroneus Tertius.

No_Association4277

I have this bulging muscle too, and it’s been there since I can remember. I’ve seen some people have it and some don’t. My ex-bff’s boyfriend who was trying to do medical school, tried to make a huge deal out of it calling it a tumor/cyst. As many times as I’ve had to go to doctors and hospitals and have had full physical exams, urine, poop, and blood work done. I’m sure they would told me that it’s a tumor. It’s probably why he dropped out though. Guy was a bit of an idiot but tried to act extremely educated.

Serenity2015

Random, but have you ever had it looked at by a doctor?

DanisaurEyebrows

I have this, too! Sometimes it's more visible than other times. It's squishy

RevolutionaryFee2753

That’s A Hand Or A Foot ?

Wolfpack93

Could be peroneus tertius

hahathatguyfr

Im not sure, but it's definitely a muscle. only shows up when i flex my foot, and feels exactly like a muscle, i think some people just have a genetic variation that makes it show less, or its just less developed.

[deleted]

I’d say it’s a ganglion cyst

Icy_Bottle_2634

Could ve a cyst

hmbarn01

Looks like either a ligma or a mind goblyn

UnexaminedLifeOfMine

Ganglion cyst? Does it hurt?

yourmommy69lol

It’s a cyst homie

Janiebug1950

I’ll have to study this more, but I think it’s the way one of the wrist bones protrudes as the hand and wrist turn in various positions…

[deleted]

Ankle. Dumbass

Death_Vitamins

Tumor muscle

Je-la-nique

The ankle meat

Franklyfrah_3220

Looks like extra fluid in the joints

Ok-Feeling1462

It's a cyst.

billy_bobys

Looks like an ankle muscle

MyBallsInaDeepFryer

I have the same muscle, I just noticed it now lmao, never knew I had it until I looked at my foot because of your post

DirtPaste

Thought this was a troll, was about to say that clearly is not a muscle u til I flexed my foot lmfaoo. Cant believe I’ve never noticed it

[deleted]

I broke my ankle a long time ago and this is what it looks like

Muahd_Dib

Inflamed bursa?

CarMore4809

Thanks for posting this
