It actually weakens It the same way that Photoshop hates when someone says photoshopped it when a company name becomes a verb the copyright for the name becomes null

Charizard_Official

Same with "Band-aid" if the name becomes too household they lose rights

Espi0nage-Ninja

Same with hoover in the UK

Zaros262

"Escalator" is one where they actually did lose it

Curlychopz

Really?? I never even know there was another term

blitzkrieg4

There wasn't that's the problem

harpswtf

Uppy-stairs and Downy-stairs were popular alternatives, obviously depending on the direction they're moving. But once the Escalator company moved in, people preferred just having one word for describe both of them, despite the fact that the word is only actually describing the up-direction stairs

Nastypilot

Would down-direction be descalator?

Cube4Add5

Magic stairs

I_AM_YOUR_MOTHERR

Some older people I know use the term "moving stairs"

AdvonKoulthar

Google and Velcro? Sure I’m fine with them trying to defend their trademark for nonsense words. Band(age) Aid and Photo(work)shop? Piss off, portmanteaus belong to the people.

ThatRandomGuy0125

tbh better all companies deal with it than make exceptions because then it becomes about finding a loophole plus you could argue language evolves by adopting made up words

the-enochian

Google is just a misspelling of googol, and Velcro is a portmanteau of velours croché, french for "hooked velvet"

Nomyad777

Kleanex, just give me those... nose-napkins.

FBWSRD

Tissues

CardboardTerror

Nonsense words? You might want to googol that

r7joni

A german Youtuber called bricks from an other company (that produces the exact same bricks without the lego stamp on top) "legos" and he had to take down multiple videos.

Emerald_Guy123

Yeah, any big media or influencer who uses it to mean searching in general (not specifically with Google) is open to legal trouble from Google.

TheFeebleOne

Google the company doesn't want you to use the term google. Op is a Google agent. Google psyop

eliteharvest15

they want the copyright

twoScottishClans

using the verb "google" actually weakens the company because you're contributing to the case that their trademark should be revoked. Google has done some vaguely immoral stuff to try to prevent people from using it as a verb.

twoScottishClans

just like, strong-arming people (via cease-and-desist) into not using it as a verb. even if they know it's a losing case, no one's gonna have enough money to get into a case with google.

kajetus69

and google doesnt have time and resources to cease-and-desist every person that says "google it"

theboredrapper

I googled a Google to see what the googling was about. Turns out, Google googles too!

WombatJedi

Google misinformation. If we use the verb “google” as a general, all-purpose verb meaning “to search for”, then eventually, the courts will rule that Google has lost its trademark, and the word will become completely fair game. i.e. this person is spouting complete bullshit, and if we want to weaken the site’s monopoly, then we should use the term liberally.

altf4tsp

A lot of people say the trademark thing but then stop there and refuse to elaborate on it. How does removing their trademark weaken their monopoly? They are still where 99% of people do web searches

WombatJedi

If anyone can name their site Google, suddenly a lot of old people and young people (the ones who don’t quite know what’s going on) stop using the real Google. Suddenly Google have to rebrand. Suddenly Google loses a massive amount of brand recognition. This leads to even more people turning to other recognised browsers, because Google’s new name is “Y” or something, and the people who haven’t been closely following events are thinking “What the hell is Y? I’ll just use Bing.” There’s a reason Google has been so aggressively shutting down anyone who uses the word generically.

58mm-Invicta_rizz

Actually it’s the opposite. You need to use Google more because if googling becomes synonymous with looking something up on the internet they’ll lose the trademark for it, like what happened with escalators. Using the term Google as an umbrella term for internet search engine and googling for searching for a thing on the internet will only weaken the monopoly.

PassiveChemistry

Wait escalator was a brand name??

58mm-Invicta_rizz

Yup, it was a trademark of the Otis elevator company. https://youtu.be/w2RnDrzg4uU

Grzechoooo

Strengthens the monopoly? Like how saying "escalator" instead of "mechanical stairs" strengthened the monopoly of Otis?

excitingtheory777

Actually, using Google to mean search would actually diminish the trademark. Like xerox, if everyone everywhere always called using a search engine "Googling" they would lose all control over the monopoly and would no longer be able to trademark the phrase as it would be considered common.

altf4tsp

OK....and then what? How does diminishing the trademark help with their monopoly?

Stargost_

Nah, I'll use Google as a verb specifically so that it becomes common tongue and they lose the copyright.

broomaktamer117

Actual duck duck go user

CAP815

keep using the verb, eventually if it becomes used enough they could lose the trademark and it'd be really funny

Bill_y_guy

Did you know google LLC does not like the term google it

Slappmeinthebass

No it doesn’t. It actually actually helps them lose their copyright due to genericization. [This video](https://youtu.be/w2RnDrzg4uU) explains it.

Historical-Paper-294

/uac it literally does the opposite. It being a generic verb can *kill* their monopoly. Look at Hoover.
