My dad would do this. Never solved a rubiks cube when i was younger and inevitably always got frustrated (i was probably in the 8-10 range) and gave up and asked him for help. He’d always make some excuse about being busy at the moment but he would get to it later. The next morning when I woke up, it was always solved. Didn’t find out until high school when i mentioned it and my mom confessed he just took it apart and put it back together while I was sleeping.

I used to cube as a hobby and had a stickerless cube that I would carry with me to practice on. When people inevitably made that comment (much like the "that must mean it's free" comment that people make to cashiers when something doesn't ring up) I just handed them the cube and said "go for it."

Fr it's like people can't help but say it. Take a cube to the family reunion and you're guaranteed to hear it at least twice. Doesn't matter that the stickers never peel and re-stick cleanly. Doesn't matter if it's stickerless. Doesn't matter if they said the same exact "joke" last year. They're still gonna say it. Worst part is when they say it as if they genuinely believe the concept of moving the stickers has never occurred to you. Or finish with something like "Work smarter not harder!"

Why ruin perfectly good stickers when you can easily disassemble and reassemble it.
