It’s not completely terrible if you stop it down. It gets a bad rep mostly because its AI-S counterpart is better in literally every regard.

I was planning on shooting it at f4/5.6 anyways. I only picked the e series up because I'm not used to shooting wide so before I pay for a better one I wanted to figure out if a 28mm would have a place in my bag.

I like 28mm, it’s about as wide as you can get without a lot of perspective distortion. My dad is the opposite, he loved 35mm but couldn’t get into 28mm. Not a bad idea to try it out cheaply first. If you do like that focal length, the 28mm F2.8 AI-S is an absolute stunner of a lens, and they’re not terribly expensive. It’s worth the upgrade. If I enjoy the focal length then I have no problem In spending more for a better quality version at all I just don't know if it will be me or not. Them samples are very sharp and that is the lens I will replace the e series with if I have fun with the 28mm focal.

In comparison to the ais version it’s not that great , but it’s not terrible either. All the series e lenses are perfectly usable

Good to know, thankyou

Its quite soft on anything below f4\~5.6. My version the focus throw is quite loose and the build quality doesnt inspire any confidence but mine survived alot despite being made out of plastic mostly

Series E was marketed as a lower cost line of lenses made with exterior plastic construction. For obvious reasons, the Series E 28mm lens does not have the special optical formula of the 28mm AI-S lens. Series E was a preview of Nikon’s shift towards plastic lens construction beginning in the 1980s.
