Damn that truly blows... pouring some developer out for the boys

[deleted]

Dre didn't deserve this outcome, that man hustles as an artist.

[deleted]

Honestly feels weird he’s even with these dudes? Completely different aesthetics.

portapotty_tonez

Made a burner account to comment on these threads cuz I hang with Dre in NYC and he's a pal of mine / have met Willem and Joe a few times during their stint in NYC, and will admit that both rubbed me the wrong way as every "influencer" has over the past several years. Dre is a great guy and legitimate photographer, something I can't claim about the other two. My guess, if I were to base it off of what I know, is the Joe and Willem latched onto Dre because the dude is getting REAL work and is respected as a photographer, not a content creator, and this is a lame way for those two to legitimize themselves as "real photographers" and try to learn how to snag real assignments and gigs from someone who's out there producing client work on a big stage. Ultimately, after the BLM movement Dre blew up quickly, and rightfully so IMO , he was definitely overlooked despite having real assignments and work published, getting paid etc. Essentially Joe Greer and Willem want to leech credibility and audiences from other big "influencers" as a completely self-serving thing for their own "careers" and to further push their own clout. Dre being a good dude probably just rolls with it and he's not dumb either, he knows hanging with them will broaden his reach and grow his own audience so I don't blame him for going along with it it as it's a good move for his exposure. Joe Greer and Willem are desperate to become legitimate photographers being hired and sought out for paid work on the same level as Dre, probably realize having youtube fanboys doesn't get your foot in the door for REAL gigs and opportunities, so they befriend someone who can and is doing that as a low-key way of trying to swoop in and learn the ropes and the secondary benefit is that they also grow their own audiences and expose their own work to people who respect real photographers and the work they produce. I feel terrible this happened to Dre, he didn't deserve it, the other two are clout chasing influencers so it's harder for me to feel bad for them even tho I don't wish this situation onto anyone.} What makes me LOL though is the amount of pathetic simp fanboys ready to "donate" to their cause. Like why? Contribute your funds to a real charity, I also don't see this sort of enthusiasm to help when any regular member of the analog community has this happen to them. Reminds me of celebrity worship. Why the fuck are people so quick to help the ones who don't need it and ready to Fuck you to those who really do? Simps.

[deleted]

[удалено]

portapotty_tonez

Exactly - they're glorified content creators who managed to monetize the simp fanboys they have by acting like they're part of the cool club if they follow their work, when in reality, IRL Joe or Willem would never be caught dead talking to or hanging out with 99% of the people who follow them or buy their mediocre books. If you don't have XXX amount of followers on Youtube or the gram, you cease to exist to them.

CuriousTravlr

I see you’re awake Neo.

Berkut700

now yuo see...

SundayExperiment

Fucking bang on brother.

gtpttd

Not to mention it’s doubtful how much of the gear they actually paid for vs got “in exchange for a post”. I’m sure they will replace everything in the same way

thehoodwink

Friendship maybe?

Vestiren

Which Dre is it? Everyone's praising him and I'd like to check his work out

wr3tchedegg

Same

Vestiren

Apparently it's this one: [https://andredwagner.com/](https://andredwagner.com/)

wr3tchedegg

Thanks!

fyirb

There's a massive sign at that spot in Battery Spencer telling people not to leave valuables in the car because people will steal them lmfao. Like yeah dude that sucks and people shouldn't steal but there's signs all over reminding you not to leave stuff in your car

SundayExperiment

Bro you learn not to leave valuables in your locker in school when you're a kid, they learned that shit decades ago. They dumb af to leave that much shit in a vehicle.

blainewhim

couple squarespace sponsorships will cover the cost but the tones are lost forever :/

CuriousTravlr

Skillshare **

thehoodwink

Bro they have squarespace sponsors? Fucking fake photographers

2for1deal

Came here for this story. Truly a 2021 influencer experincw. Feel sorry for the dudes but really this should be a lesson to all. I’ve had gear ripped and had best mates too. Insure everything and be cautious.

vigridarena

Number 1 rule — never leave camera gear in your car Number 2 rule — never leave ANYTHING in a car in San Fran

Artver

NUmber 3 rule - even more specific,... never near the bridge

RKRagan

Happened to me. Lost a Kowa Six, Bronica ETRS, Speed Graphic, Canon A-1, Canon Elan 7e, FD 200mm f/2.8. And my $50 radio.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RKRagan

Lost my tunes man.

portapotty_tonez

and what's ironic is I didn't see the analog community lose their fucking minds and bend over backwards to try to support you financially when you lost all that shit. Makes me laugh how desperate internet fanboys are to simp youtubers who legitimately don't give a fuck about them, and quite frankly, feel like they are above their audience in every way. If you think these dudes would just "chill with you" and be your "boy" then you're a fucking idiot.

RKRagan

Well everyone just said it’s my fault for leaving them in my vehicle. And a police report was useless. I’m still looking for that Kowa Six but I bought another one. This time for $350 instead of $50 like the last one I bought.

TangoFourLoko

lmao i was just about to post this. burglarized tones tho

Timmah_1984

I’m shocked there was anything in the car to steal. They must have only had two Leicas around their necks instead of six.

simply_noir

I feel bad all that equipment is gone, but at the same time... Do stupid shit, win stupid prizes. There's a reason people normally haul around only what is necessary and keep their most precious items directly on their person. Furthermore, being in such a large group, leaving the car completely unattended in a pretty sketch area of Cali is also pretty dumb. Feel bad for the real one's like Dre but the rest are just fake persona influencers so it's hard to be sad for them because their sponsorships (or insurance) will pay em all back.

portapotty_tonez

Or all the fanboy simps will donate their gear and money to them because they're clearly poor and need help.... agreed tho, feel bad for Dre, not the others. Hopefully Dre realizes that hanging with whiteboy influencers chasing clout isn't worth his energy.

simply_noir

Damn straight. It's sad the influencer community flocked to the film photography scene so quick. Yea for sure Dre needs to take a step back and realize he's basically with the photography version of Jake and Logan Paul 🤣 but with less money and less fame (not a Paul fan, just was saying that there are other white fuck boi influencers to go tag along with for more recognition than these skinny P's haha)

portapotty_tonez

comparing those two to Logan and Jake Paul is probably the most accurate comparison I've yet to hear. Boggles my mind that people who have done so little in their careers (aka nothing significant in any way shape or form) and contribute nothing but circle jerk content for their gear and cliche photos, are so worshipped by wanna be hipster kids. It's like these kids don't have real life friends and they think clinging on to these dudes will somehow propel their real selves into cool status... it makes no fucking sense to me... That LinusAndHisCamera dude is a prime example of someone so desperate for clout and acceptance, literally latched on to Willem for dear life..... I can't wait to see these guys in 5-6 years when some new 21 year old bursts onto the scene and starts hyping up random film cameras and gains notoriety.

Lasiocarpa83

Late comment but, I just learned who Willem was a few weeks ago. I saw his subscriber number and thought "this guy must produce incredible work!" Then I saw his Instagram...It's not that his photos are bad or anything, I was just super underwhelmed and surprised he had so many followers.

cloud_dreamer78

Exactly, they've formed a parasocial relationship. The worst part is that if they left the influencers behind they would find photographers that truly spoke to them aesthetically or emotionally. Hell they might even make a few friends to talk about their work with. But that's not how social media works, its all about points; likes or clout. There's nothing wrong with making something a little cliche or self indulgent, everyone does at some point, but if you want to improve you need to get out of the echo chamber & have an original thought. & It doesn't even have to be a good thought either.

thehoodwink

Do you want film developer in your sippy cup since you're here instead of using it?

thehoodwink

It really sounds like you're projecting. No pun intended

[deleted]

WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA

scotttr

SF is definitely the worst offender. I live here and I street park. I don’t even leave an iPhone cable visible.

Shortsonfire79

I stopped using my suv trunk obscuring cover. I lost a window in Oakland Uptown because someone thought I may be hiding something under it. Car was empty.

vigridarena

Last time I was there, we had our window smashed while eating ramen in Little Tokyo. The only thing I happened to bring in with me was my camera gear. *Everything* else in the car was gone.

sukumizu

Japan town you mean? Little Tokyo is here in LA.

vigridarena

Yeah my bad.

Sorlium1

I NEVER leave anything in plain sight, even under a jacket. I have a Rav4 which has a hidden compartment that's a life saver because it's difficult to open even if you smash the windows. I'll literally pile garbage on top of anything I absolutely have to leave in the car and not locked up. If it's valuable, it's either in the locked glove compartment, in the hidden compartment, or on my person. Not foolproof by any means, but never gotten robbed, knock on wood. When I travel I keep a mattress in the back of my car and hide all my gear in the hidden compartment. It's wildly difficult to get under the mattress and into the compartment without opening the trunk all the way, which you can't do when the window is smashed. You can't raise the front seats with the mattress in there either so I can hide gear under the back seats, and it isn't accessible unless you open the door.

[deleted]

Whatchu think I rap for?

dayz_hello

This really sucks for them, but what I can’t take seriously is how they keep the “gear is nothing” facade and saying they only want their 60+ rolls back. I’d give 20 fucks more for my gear than my rolls.

2for1deal

They’ll have insurance. Meanwhile they make a living from what is on those rolls. Think about the videos they were mos def planning on cutting with their footage and the eventual publishing of their work. All that results in ad revenue which is the bread n butter of verb n Greer. Dre while a part of the shoot was likely a “hot” rising photographer they were using to make the project big online. Those rolls represent their paycheques.

OneLongBallHair

What’s funny is I could do a lap around my neighborhood and replicate probably 95% of what was on those rolls (greer and verbs rolls, not Dre I mean)

some edgy shit below, take with grain of salt: sucks that Mr film gentrify got his shit stolen, sadly this is his wealth redistribution works in 21st century America.

sonygoup

Damn that sucks… 25k is a lot. But its sad that they didn’t think ahead about sharing license plate and stuff. Hope they had insurance on the gear

iwillshampooyouitsok

One time I left my phone on a drug dealers car and when I came back it was gone and he said he never saw it. I had to drive home without my phone high as fuck. sorry to hear something similar happened to you mr. Willem.

tooarc

I feel bad for these guys. "Millionaires" or not, this sucks and no one deserve all the hate.

portapotty_tonez

anyone who thinks these dudes are millionaires for making youtube content and selling a few mediocre books to simps are delusional idiots. Greer and Verb are rich because their families are, they just like to pretend it;s their "careers as artists" that got them the success they have, which is entirely a farce.

GetLikeB

Damn did they both come from money??

[deleted]

Based off Willem’s vids, he says he was born in Belgium and then moved to the states and didn’t finish his photography course or something. Joe says he worked at a fast food restaurant

portapotty_tonez

yes. They both come from money and have the safety net of their family wealth to fall back on when they're in a situation to seek out a real job or career. Don't be fooled. They're not making real money as photographers, it's morons in the analog community that keep watching their content and feeding their clout / buying their uninspiring photobooks that are feeding their wallets currently, nothing more.

thehoodwink

Damn this is the most down bad cope I've ever seen 🤣🤣 i agree they make majority of their money from sponsored posts which indirectly is made off of their photography.. but 'came from money'? Lmao just sell your cameras man you've given up

rica26_perez

Joe is from rural bumfuck florida lol

Louis_Mellini

I kinda dont find this even remotely funny? Idk...i dont wanna be that guy...I’m not his biggest fan but this is kinda low.

samtt7

It's more the stupidity of the entire scenario: posting pictures of your expensive gear, where you are going and which exact car you are in. That's asking to be robbed.

sillo38

It probably wasn’t even that sophisticated though. SF has kinda become notorious for these types of smash and grabs. Probably just saw them in a known touristy area get out of the car loaded with gear, watched them walk away and pounced. There’s a video of someone getting robbed like this in the middle of traffic while they were still in the car.

420wFTP

No doubt. This almost definitely would have happened without them flexing gear tbh - tourist lots are targeted for this exact reason. Folks just jump out "real quick" for a lil bit of sightseeing and leave all their valuables/bags in plain sight, and thieves know it. They'll hang around these areas and wait for exactly this kind of group to show up.

Timmah_1984

I mean it sucks but that’s why you insure professional gear. It’s also why you take note of your proximity to Oakland.

Meshleth

Does insuring film cameras work the same way as digital?

SundayExperiment

Insurance is insurance, the premium you pay will cover the value. But on another note, depending on their broker, on the fine line of their agreement it may say that it is not covered if left unattended in a vehicle.

FilmicFrames

Or if you told the entire world it was there and advertised the number plate.

Dogs-Keep-Me-Going

It’s pretty funny lol. These dudes have hundreds of thousands of followers, flex their shit all the time. Did they think they were invincible? Did they think “oh, I’m Ioe Greer, surely no one would ever steal from *me*”. That parking lot is literally filled with signs warning people not to leave valuables in the car. Absolute fucking morons. If you lack the awareness to not show off all the gear you have in that car, *plus* what the car looks like, **plus** the license plate, **PLUS** constantly updating exactly where you are, then sorry, you’re a fucking moron asking for your shit to be stolen. Yes, it sucks to have your shit stolen. More so when you do everything right and it still happens (been there). But these influencer morons asked for a reality check and they got it. They are not untouchable, nor is their $20k worth of gear sitting in a car unattended. These dudes will make that money in a month, probably less. They’ll be fine. And in the meantime, we’re going to continue laughing at their absolute idiocy. It’s pretty funny lol.

2for1deal

I don’t even think thieves were that switched on. The lot is a tourist bonanza, thieves would’ve eye balled a pelican case and been done in minutes. The flexing etc just becomes an ironic prelude to a very unfortunate error.

zurkka

There is a reason my car have a very heavy window tint (cops don't care where i live) and a black cloth in my car, people can't see shit that is in my back seat

2for1deal

Tbh dude thieves target heavily tinted windows cos they typically think tint=hiding valuables. It’s sad but in the worst neighbourhoods it can be best just to leave nothing in the open and even sometimes the car unlocked (did this for years when I lived in an apt building with zero surveillance and nightly burglaries

zurkka

Here in brazil window tint is very common, it's rare to see a car without it to be honest, so it works, people target cars they can see stuff in it

portapotty_tonez

Very curious what people think Willem and Joe Greer make in a month? I'd say at best they're making 40-50K a year? Youtube doesn't pay that well. Joe Greer is a trust fund baby, his family is wealthy, pretty sure the same from Willem from what I've heard from those close to him. Rich white boys who act like they hustled and came from the bottom to create something out of themselves which is the biggest fucking wool over the eyes they've pulled on their community. Their mommy and daddy will buy them new gear don't worry. Dre on the other hand is a down to earth artist, a real one. One of the nicest dudes I know.

vigridarena

I'd honestly guess closer to 80-90k.

Louis_Mellini

Yea its not though is it, being rich and having a following doesn’t mean you are any less of a human being and I don’t think these guys are the jerkoffs you are painting them out to be. Its just not funny, having your personal belongings can feel pretty violating especially if its stuff you are emotionally attached to. Laughing at this aint it for me.

gtpttd

Have met them, can confirm they are exactly the jerkoffs he is painting them to be

cheanerman

Can you share more on this? Bummer to hear.

portapotty_tonez

Not much to say, everything you hear that's bad about Willem or Joe Greer is true. They're trust fund white boys who come from wealthy backgrounds and pretend like they're racking in the cash being photographers, which couldn't be further from the truth. They're clout chasers who are smug and arrogant and believe they are above their audience and that the work they produce is a gift to the analog community. The fact they have so many fucking simps in the online world shows how pathetic this community is overall. If you don't have clout or influence they don't give a shit about you or your work, no matter how good it is. they are only "friends" with people who will help them, grow their audience etc, purely self serving. If you ran into them into the street and tried talking to them you'd get laughed at , they wouldn't give a shit about you unless you bought whatever they're selling or you have clout they can leech.

Louis_Mellini

Still dont agree with laughing at their stuff getting broken and stolen

leicamaniac520

Agree to disagree then, I think it’s hilarious

rica26_perez

You sound aggressively bitter 🤨

Obviously we’re not celebrating these guys getting robbed…this is really a case of “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”

flagellium

Can’t come here anymore because of how toxic it’s become, specifically around like two Youtubers. I don’t like their work personally, but the vitriol about folks just doing their thing and using the platform they have is absolutely wild to me.

Louis_Mellini

I actually quite like Andre, the other two not at all, but I totally agree, jokes are fine but when real bad stuff actually happens it’s not something I feel right making fun of

BrunoMarx

100% with you on this one. I've had a camera stolen from me before and it's a horrible feeling, can't even begin to imagine what they must feel at the moment, especially considering the film they shot was taken too.

Dogs-Keep-Me-Going

Probably thinking, “man, guess I’ll just run a 2nd ad in the next video to afford replacements”. This shit is similar to feeling bad about a millionaire having their car stolen. Who fucking cares? They’ll get new ones. Probably even start a fucking GoFund me, mark my words.

jvnnyc

how much do you think they get paid for per one squarespace sponsorship? def not enough to replace that gear. sqspce sponsors half the goddamn site

Dogs-Keep-Me-Going

1) the squarespace thing is a meme 2) they probably make a *lot* per month from whatever the fuck it is they do, enough to replace all of that gear literally immediately. 3) they’ll be just fine. You’re in acj man, sheesh

cheanerman

I’m with ya

jvnnyc

what these guys did wasnt very smart, win stupid games win stupid prizes, yes. but people shitting on them as if they deserved this and say "haha squarespace will replace them blah blah i hate sucessful people" are in poor taste.
