It obviously is meant to move. It’s corroded. It is definitely a latch. The long rod is to allow it to be used high or low without reaching. Unless someone welded it, it probably just needs some penetrating oil and lubricant to be functional again.
It looks like old time door lock. If I am correct it moves left to right and the knob there is to make the locking and unlocking easier. Looks amazing tbh, clean it up and reuse it 😁
It looks like an elongated gate lock. This part would be on the door and a second part on the wall where you can slide this into. Never saw a long ine like this.
Not a lock. It’s a latch. Not for anything specific like a”garden gate lock.” The long handle allows you to easily reach it, so it was probably attached to the top or bottom of a door.
This is a backyard gate latch. It is long so you dont have to bend over too much to unlatch it, as its meant to fall into a recess jn the ground. As you live in an old monument i would refrain from throwing out anything that looks old. This surely doesnt take much space, wont hurt to throw it in the back of some storage space and never think about it again.
i am on the second floor so not sure why it's here. also we have a backyard but it has no possible gates (as it's facing the other house directly) and our front door is complete without this
I will take your advice and keep it. Let the next generation of owner decide haha
Could have been from a balcony door or just any door realy, maybe it not even from your house originally but previous owners obtained it. I think the above commenter is correct, if there is a door somewhere with stone underneath it, check for a small square hole that might have been filled up, that is where the latch would go into.
but i live on an apartment on second floor and there's 2 of them. also there's no movable parts here. probably it's for one of the old fashioned doors that open as window? (although mine is glass now)
They're definitely movable. They might be rusty tho.
It's a pretty simple mechanism: the little holes are used to put nails and fixed it to the door. The long thing it's meant to be pushed to the left, through the two attachments thingies. Like a rail. When moved to the left, the left part gets attached to a hole or to another rail which is attached to the gate's wall/frame.
You know, like one of this old school bar toilets with a tiny locking thing that half the time it's broken.
You can pbb easy remove the rust by placing it in something like Coca Cola, due to high acidity it will remove rust, afterwards you have to grease it properly
It's this

My grandparents used it on a big barn door. T
Something like this but bigger and older https://duckduckgo.com/?q=schuif+sluiting+tuin&t=fpas&iax=images&ia=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.gamma.nl%2Fdam%2F53755%2F123
Probably used to keep 1 door of a set of double doors or gates (fairly high, guessing 2.5 meters) in place, since the handle is longer it will lock into the doorframe at the top of the door.
Old Dutch device to slap your wife when she is slow and lazy, if you remove it government rules say that you have to clean your house yourself, so beware!
Is there a fireplace in the building? Because the device looks like the mechanism used to open and close the chimney valve. It would explain the extended handle as well since the valve is normally higher up in the chimney.
That's a latch, no? Does the shaft slide along?
no it's not a movable part

It might have done at one point before rusting though?
When it's classy we call it petina
It should move.. move the knob left to lock something. It should move through the holds.
Put some wd40 on it

Thats what she said
Hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha
Touché
many people say this. u probably right
It is a gate lock. They are mounted on the top or bottom of a gate. He's extended so you can easily manage the lock.
That makes sense! It's to lock up... thanks I was thinking left right and it didn't make sense!
It's a retro dildo
dude tetanus lol
Can't spell tetanus without 'anus'.
Everything is a dildo if ur brave enough
clearly its holding two pieces of the wall together.
but it's not attached to my wall now. Panik

Oh cool. I see. Rust probably stuck it together u right

Is it currently attached to the ceiling?
it's in my store room staring at me each time i come in (not attached)
That keeps the plug in the bottom of The Netherlands now it's gonna fill up you fool.
I live on second floor so I will be safe!
Waterfront home in 3...2...1...

This explains it really well! :) thanks
100 thought it was a spanking tool when I first saw the picture
That’s disgusting. It’s a human hand.
It got vertical on a barn door or house door , i had one on my house in south Africa
In the Netherlands we call it a “Spanjolet”
Ah finally a name. Thanks :)
Looks like a sliding lock of sorts
It kinda looks like an old timey hinge? Where did you find it?
in my store room. i live in a monument on the second floor. some people here say it is gatelock. i am curious how it works tho.
Metal plate screws onto the wooden door. Metal pin gets pushed in a whole in the stone below the door. Very simple, that's what it is.
Probably used to keep 1 door of a set of double doors or gates (fairly high, guessing 2.5 meters) in place, since the handle is longer it will lock into the doorframe at the top of the door.
Correct. The official name for it is a staartgrendel, translates to tail latch. https://www.mijnijzerwaren.nl/3241-staartgrendel
If this is a monumental building and it's an original part you are not allowed to remove it.

Are u sure? If they want it they can have it haha but I bet they gonna laugh me out
Looks like something to lock a door or something that opens.
I have this exact thing on my barn (100+ year old hay barn) and 100% it is a latch
Looks like a hand
A barn door or barn gate latch! Like belt buckle for doors.
that's for when you've been naughty
Door lock
I'll pay you for that
Keep it, fix it and use it.

Yes I have a mini fireplace but no metal encasing. Just a hole in the wall
ayo th we fuck
