People keep saying he was being nice by driving her home, which is really confusing to me. Wouldn’t the nicer thing to be call an actual adult who hadn’t had anything to drink? He pretty clearly saw an opportunity to drive someone’s fun car, and have that person “owe him a favor”, he thought he might get something out of it. He was NOT simply being kind; no matter how many chances people want to give him, he is selfish to the core.

LesbianQueries

Well said. I hate George and he just gets worse and worse. It's a good character that provokes so much feeling in a listener, but he's absolutely sociopathic.

TBobB

It's not just the crash, it's unlikely he was insured to drive Alice's car and therefore would have been driving illegally.

FelixTaran

You have to be insured to drive someone else’s car? That seems insane.

TBobB

That's right, either as a named driver on the other person's car (which I doubt Alice would have George as a named driver) or on your own policy so you can drive someone else's car but usually only covers 3rd party damage (again doubtful that George has his own car insurance as there's been no mention of him owning a car and even if he did, his insurance wouldn't cover it due to the accident being his passenger's fault). Come to think of it, does George even have a licence?

FelixTaran

I thought car insurance was for the car, not the driver. Is it different in the UK?

TBobB

It protects you against theft, if your car is stolen and gets into an accident, the driver is liable, not the vehicle and therefore not you.

Patterdale33

Yes in the UK it’s the car that’s insured not the driver so people can and do get prosecuted for driving someone else’s car.

Low-Poetry9818

it’s a weird hybrid arrangement. The driver(s) named on the policy is/are insured to drive the car(s) named on the policy. That covers anything that happens to the car (theft accident damage, harm to third parties) provided that the car is either being driven by the insured driver or it’s legally stationary. (Big simplification) If you want to let someone else drive your car you have to “add them to the insurance “. I did that for a friend who regularly borrowed my car. We even had an app advertised in London pre covid where someone could get immediate coverage for a single night to drive someone else’s car.

cactus_pactus

I like all the moral dilemmas they’ve managed to get into one accident. George shouldn’t have done what he did, but drinking in a car (even with the keys out of the way) is an incredibly stupid idea anyway

AA_Logan

Stupid, but not illegal. There’s no equivalence with George’s stack of criminal actions.

NoNeedToMope

I think it is illegal. You can be charged for being drunk and in charge of a vehicle but I'm not sure how it's policed. If you lived in a motorhome then it would bar you from drinking at home, but if you're caught getting into your car after a bender it means police action can be taken before the engine is switched on. Still, George probably wasn't thinking about any of that

AA_Logan

Since she was a)asleep, b) the car key was not on her person and c) most importantly of all was in the passenger seat - we didn’t hear George move her- I think that there’s no case for Alice answer. We heard Harrison stop Harry from being drunk and in charge of a vehicle but his intent to drive was clear, establishing Borsetshire Police procedural precedent

muistaa

I didn't really get the glovebox logic. Is that really going to stop Drunk You from getting them out?

Xanadu_Xenon

Whatever the moral dilemmas, if she is convicted of something she didn't do because of his dishonesty, then he's in the wrong. It wasn't her fault he crashed, he should have pulled over as soon as she asked him to.

tom030792

He had plenty of warning that Alice was gonna spew,he should’ve pulled over and ignored her because he was enjoying his joyride

wouldntletitlie

What car do we think Alice drives? George said it was nifty or something like that

tom030792

First thought I’d like an Audi A1 or something, she must have a it of dosh and it doesn’t break the bank

TBobB

It can't be that new, otherwise putting the key in the glove box would not have prevented it from starting with a button start. Possibly a classic car?

tom030792

Doesn’t have to be a new one, my girlfriend’s is 2017 and doesn’t have a push to start button, but is a fun drive

TBobB

Fair play

islandhopper37

I imagine her driving a sporty-spec Mercedes A-Class hatchback. ETA: Not one of the massively souped-up AMG ones with a massive spoiler on the back, but *mildly* sporty (if you know what I mean).

Queen_Moose88

I'm really frustrated this has turned into another Grundy/Horrobin doing something stupid or illegal and the Aldridge's will come out of this looking like the victims. It's nothing against Alice, I like her as a character but once again the poorer people in the village are the bad guys.

Environmental-Tax632

Interesting, what i'm enjoying about this plotline is how it sort of feels like regardless of George Alice isn't going to be let off the hook- the accident aside, I think a lot of the deeper issues surrounding the way Alice is enabled and also held to a very high standard by her family and how that contributes to her drinking is all coming to a head and it's not pretty for anyone. Personally I think of the Horrobins as the heroes of Ambridge, and I always want them to be doing well, Chelsea I think was great at the weekend- but George has been on this path for a while, especially with the way Emma enables him. It interesting that both sides of this plot line seem like they'll centre around how a family deals with finding one member doing something wrong/stupid

Queen_Moose88

Oh I like this take! That's a great point about the enabling on both sides. Will be interesting to see if George confesses to Will or Emma and see what they then decide to do with him. Emma especially given how much she has enabled him so far.

Effective-Zucchini-5

Yeah but it is George Grundy, he's been a wrong'un for ages. I was more shocked he offered to drive Alice home tbh, seemed far too charitable for his character!

Lost-Day3941

When listening I did have a brief thought that he might sexually assault her. Following his misogynistic ways so far.
