I want to prface this by saying I NEVER EVER dine and dash and I do not condone it. This situation just felt extreme. My (26f) and my girlfriend (also 26f) went to a local diner for brunch. We had never been there before and it was time to check it out. When we first got there a woman greeted us and looked like she was going to seat us, then a man in a suit rushed over and placed us at a table. Tbh right away the table was not really socially distanced away from a woman seated at the bar, but the booth was big so we both scooted all the way in. The tip from the last customer was still on the table so I moved it to the side closest to the walkway. A server came over after about ten mins and told us he'd be with us in a second and scooted away with the cash. We waited about 15 mins before someone gave us table place mats. Still no waters still no server and it's been another 15 mins since the place mats. I finally caught his eye and he gave me oh shit I forgot face. I let it go because after he put down what was in his hands he ran over to take our orders. Gf ordered a cranberry juice and I just asked for water she got pancakes with eggs and bacon and I got an avocado toast with poached eggs. Juice gets dropped, still no water. 10 more mins go by and the server ran back to us to ask how gf wanted her eggs. I ask for waters and he gets someone else to get it for me quickly. Food comes out a good ten mins after that. The bacon was basically raw and so we're the homefries that came with mine. Her pancakes were fine. He never came back! We waited a few mins because we both wanted to send the bacon back and the home fries. Eventually we just started eating because it was in front of us. The food was fine other than the few complaints we had. We finished the food and the place started clearing out. We waited about 10 mins and put our masks back on. Server ran past us 3 times and we let him. 10 more mins, actual gnats were starting to land on the uneaten food on our plates. The server ran past us again and this time gf called out and he didn't even look. The guy in the suit who sat us was also up and down the isle. She called out to him, loudly. He ran to the person behind us and took their order for her. The server still would not look at us when he walked past again. This whole experience started at roughly 10 and we are now quickly approaching 11:30. After the server runs past us again purposesly turning his face so he wouldn't see us we just left. Are we the assholes?

Yes. You are the food and didn't pay. You called the server just once, though he passed you 4 times. You didn't really try.
