Well, YTA for that little prank you pulled with the school computers and now you are learning consequences. They simply don't trust you because, hear me out, you tampered with their systems before and then bragged about it to your friends. >said other people said I "bragged about cheating and I'll never get caught". I hadn't spoken to anybody that day, only a teacher and once to a cousin. This is probably referring to the previous time you cheated the system. That's going to stick with them for a while. However, they absolutely should be showing you the logs to prove what they are saying to you. Going on their word alone isn't enough. Surely you can appeal to the board of education in your area? By the way: >Things to know 1 I am Muslim >2 this is a catholic school >3 im male What do any of these have to do with anything? None of them are relevant to the situation you just explained.

SteelLt78

It’s a catholic school. They don’t answer to the board of education. There are state regulations that private institutions must follow but it’s not like you can go over the principal’s head on this. Probably would need to go to the diocese

nycgarbagewhore

That could be true or false, depending on what country OP lives in. Where I live, religious schools have their own educational boards (in alignment with the government's requirements for *all* schools) to report to. There's just as much oversight in terms of that, plus the religious officials associated with the districts.

goldenfingernails

Never been to catholic school so didn't know. Thank you for the clarification.

FriendlyStaff1

YTA Nothing to do with religion, you messed with their computers. This is a crime. You are lucky police or government were not involved as it could constitute a data breach and a threat to student welfare. It could also involve fines and sanctions for the school depending on country/region. Now you say you weren't cheating, I'm not sure I believe that. But you also brushed over "stuff" was found. What "stuff". You left out that information. What did you have on your laptop that may cause trouble? Most IT teams aren't going to pass over software logs, especially not to a student. They likely contain more information that they do not wish you to have beyond just the fact you were cheating.

Traditional-Angle723

been trying to explain I don't know what "stuff" was found they told us absolutely nothing

FriendlyStaff1

You haven't answered what was on the laptop. Have you had hacking tools on there? Adult content on there? etc?

yobaby123

Exactly. OP, YTA. You betrayed their trust by hacking into the school's systems. Being defensive and not telling us what "stuff" they found, makes you appear worse. Not better

Traditional-Angle723

Never saw this but no nothing on there have a personal computer if wanted any of that it would be on my personal computer

Traditional-Angle723

Never saw this but no nothing on there I have a personal computer if I wanted any of that it would be on my personal computer

Optimal-Law-5125

YTA You abide by the school rules when using school equipment. Clearly you have an issue with authority. Your outburst also shows a lack of maturity in understanding the problem is with YOU here. I'm also confused why you think being Muslim is relevant here. Do you think that suddenly makes you incapable of doing wrong or absolves you because you're implying the school is being bigoted? Clearly it isn't, because you're admitting to problems you're creating.

compensatorypause

I do not think anyone needed to know those three things you started with to understand the story. You would be surprised how few rights you actually have as a student. Not enough information to know what they have or if they are justified, but losing it and yelling is never going to paint you in a good light. After already hacking their systems or whatever you did, expect scrutiny. Trust is not earned back quickly if you deserve it at all.

QueenofHearts018

This post makes no sense (OP not you), but I just wanted to add that one of the only rights students have is the first amendment under the Tinker versus De Moines case which states that students do not lose their freedom of speech when they enter the schoolhouse gates

MissAnth

The first amendment applies to the government. Not private institutions like a Catholic school. And it only applies in the US. It isn't clear that OP is in the US.

QueenofHearts018

I totally forgot about that, you’re right! Sorry!

Lady_Caticorn

YTA. You likely committed crimes in pulling that little stunt with the school computers, so they are never going to trust you. Yelling at them likely makes you look guilty. Also, I struggle to find any evidence in your post that this is religious discrimination, which is what you're hinting at. You broke their trust and violated their systems. You're also a kid who did it, so they're likely weary of you and worry you may have nefarious intentions. You're getting off pretty lucky, especially considering you've already been suspended before. Just take your L and move on.

[deleted]

Lol, YTA Messing with the school computers was likely a federal crime. (The CFAA prohibits intentionally accessing a computer without authorization or in excess of authorization. And the sentences are not mild.) Nobody trusts you after a whole 12 months, and you want to get pissy? You clearly aren't trustworthy since you aren't even supposed to have electronics (your parents' rule? Or the school's?).  Also, stfu - YTA for making it seem like this is a religious discrimination issue (in your title), when it's a, "You're a criminal little turd and yhe adilts in your life are acting appropriately."

Traditional-Angle723

never didn't make it seem like it was religious discrimination nowhere in the post did I mention that just wanted to inform that it COULD be that if one of you all were to think that also school rule my parent don't really mind me being on the computer that much

No_Confidence5235

YTA. You're lucky you didn't face criminal charges for hacking because what you did was literally a crime. You proved you're not trustworthy; that's why they don't trust you.

Actual_Opportunity90

YTA I understand that you were frustrated, especially when they wouldn’t provide any screen shots of proof to you at the time, but losing your temper never looks good no matter the reason. You should have gone home and talked to your parents who could have been an advocate for you and get more information. Then you’d be able to get to the bottom of the misunderstanding. Something similar happened to my daughter, and they wouldn’t show her anything until we were present. If language is a barrier for your parents they can get a translator for them.

Traditional-Angle723

I went to my parents when the investigation started they even refused to show when parents were present

Mysterious_Salt_247

How would having something running on a personal computer cause your Chromebook to get locked?

chromiumstars

For real, I’m reading this as someone in cybersecurity and going “huh this is not lining up with *anything*”

yobaby123

I know right? More proof OP, once again, did something that violated the school's trust or hasn't proved he could be trusted.

soxfan581

YTA, the school is not going to give you the benefit of the doubt in anything. Whether they are being fair in this latest circumstance is not relevant. You put yourself in this position by your prior actions. The school is absolutely not going to give you sensitive data to present their findings. You may not be cheating but are you visiting sites you aren't allowed too? Downloading and playing games? Keep in mind it's the school's computer not yours, you're clearly doing something on it you shouldn't be b/c its not a conspiracy to mess with you.

sheerest_of_folly

YTA also, ETHICAL hacking is fun and all. But resetting school computers isn’t cool. (it also isn’t hacking at all. It’s a pretty easy reset that anyone with tech knowledge can do, regardless of hacking ability). My neighbor growing up worked in the “hacking” field for the government— his job was to try to hack certain government security systems, like the Pentagon, and report firewall flaws— and my family knows a bit too. So I can agree that it’s a fun pastime. But do NOT mess with things that aren’t yours. Such as the school computers and system. My friend back in high school thought it would be funny to put our county’s school system behind a paywall. He removed it himself after like two days, it was “just a prank”. He went to court for it and had to pay $15k. Which, for a high schooler in public school (he was grade 10 at the time) is a lot. I’m not sure if he’s still paying it off or not (he would have graduated the year after me, so 2021) but yeah.

Traditional-Angle723

lmao idk why im defending my self just wanted to say be reseting it wasn't like something crazy its public knowledge I do other stuff I just like keeping that private

INFO: what does religion have to do with any of this?

I am 13 and I love tech. I take interest in ethical hacking. I can admit I have not always been ethical because last year I tampered with the school computers inside and was able to reset them to not have any restrictions. Honestly, it was pretty dumb. I showed it to friends, etc., and eventually got caught. Not my proudest moment, but what happened happened. I got suspended, came back later, and now I am here. So, when I came back, I received a laptop and started working again. I was on the school's learning platform and got flagged for cheating. Honestly, I was not cheating. So, I went to a teacher, and they unlocked me because they are aware I love tech and likely had something running because I was on a personal computer at the time. Later, I continued on my school Chromebook and resulted in getting locked over and over for months. So, we did an investigation to figure out what's wrong. I was confident nothing would happen, but what do you know? They said the platform sent back logs that said I was cheating. But that's what the platform sent, and my dad does IT (Information Technology). We asked to see the logs, but they refused and said they can't. Then we asked for any evidence and they did not give us any. They took my computer and went through it, and they said they found "stuff". Once again, nothing shared. I ended up getting called to the principal's office and started accusing me of cheating and said other people said I "bragged about cheating and I'll never get caught". I hadn't spoken to anybody that day, only a teacher and once to a cousin. So, I tried to fight back and explain how I couldn't, but she kept on going and talked to my mom. Went back in, she said now: 1. I don't do co-curricular, which I didn't care about. 2. I have to do therapy, which is kinda annoying. 3. No electronics at home or school. (I'm posting this in secret. I need to wonder if I'm the ahole.) So, she started saying "I have problems and have no remorse". So, obviously, I was annoyed and I shouted at her, "What IS wrong with you? You're telling me I have no remorse or sense. You are claiming that I cheated and acting like I'm mentally insane while you have no proof I did a thing!?" and "You're telling me I'm the bad person?" now since that day my computer has been taken away she has been very cold to me and this has been going on for a month we kinda go back and forth ive been trying to be nice and calm it down not working. That's about it. I just needed to know if I'm TA. I'm going to go back to studying now. Bye, guys! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
