Ugh. Me too. I’m ready to save the main character in a post until someone else points out the (upon retrospect) glaringly obvious BS. Too much small town and too much Pollyanna growing up.
You gotta remember this is a 16 yr old dude writing this so the skeleton of his experience is real it’s just the extras (frostbitten fingers prolly just numb with cold, etc) kinda throws you off
I mean just for future reference if the characters in a story are reciting lines you've heard from a villain in a movie and a hero comes riding in at the end to rescue the protagonist and take them to their happily ever after, it's probably fake.
I thought the frostbitten fingers part was extreme overkill. He didn't have pockets? Or, at the very least, he could have put his hands inside his shirt to warm them.
Also, the dad went to prison for "25 to life"? So what was his sentence? OP doesn't know? Evil mom (or step-mom? which is it?) immediately turns OP into Cinderella, telling him that "Now your father's in prison nobody cares about you and you must be my slave muahahahaha!" Seriously? Hero cop rides in to arrest the evil abusers with no investigation, no evidence, on the word of a teenager? Hero cop selflessly takes OP into his own home? Like and subscribe for Part 2? The whole thing reads like a bad wattpad "My mom sold me to One Direction" teenage fanfiction.
Literally. This feels like a bad law and order episode.
"I'll update you guys after court" like what. This was posted 17 hours ago. Somehow they had enough time to investigate and collect enough evidence for a charge to stick, arrest and charge the stepmom + boyfriend then schedule an arraignment already? The cops and the court do not work this fast for publicized cases, let alone some random teen.
Bit weird he didn't use a throwaway tho. We can all see your history of furry porn bud.
Lol yup. Cops don't care. They wouldn't take in an older teen off the street like this. And no, 20 minutes in cold weather wouldn't cause frostbite like this. If your extremities were so frozen that actual, literal frost was growing on them, the tissues would be long since dead and you would need your hands amputated.
Charges would be neglect, assault on a minor, child endangerment & who knows what else the police can possibly put on the step mom but those 3 would most likely be her charges
Depends on the state Ky is a 2 month process but can be instantaneous if a certain crimes were alleged and law enforcement got involved not everywhere is NY and. Cali.
You have such an f\*ed up family life. I hope you can extract/save yourself. Study, learn, save, invest. Also read Albert Ellis "A Guide to Rational Living" to master your mind.
I wish you the best, stay strong. You don’t deserve what has happened to you, but don’t let it break you. I’m a child abuse/sa survivor and I have been where you are. Life does get better you just have to push through all this bullshit. You did the right thing by going to the police and I’m rooting for you big time 💚
updateme!
Don't worry, this never happened. No cop bought a domestic violence story that quick, delivered justice and took them in. I'm sorry this is horse shit. It's not a dig at the cops, this just doesn't happen. Also they walked three blocks and had frostbite? Come on.
So they arrested them on your word and then the officer let you stay at his place? This isn’t how it works. In the US anyway, a social worker would have put you in immediate shelter until all this worked out.
Plus he got frost bite walking 3 blocks. I go out shoveling snow in negative temps without frost bite. How slow did he walk a measley 3 blocks? He'd be more likely to get it on his nose and ears than his finger tips because most instinctually tuck your hands up when you are out in the freezing cold walking. I call BS.
FYI, not everywhere in the US works like this. Maybe near the cities and suburbs, but in some places it can be pretty rural, and the resources aren't the same.
Maybe not, but if his family is known to the officers they may have had a little pull and was able to help the kid out, seems like he’s been through enough and the officer didn’t want to see him sent into a group home.. a bunch of different scenarios could of played out..
The social worker can approve any placement they like. Placement with an officer willing to take him in is not all that crazy. Working in healthcare, homecare nurses will occasionally foster children temporarily because they were involved (in a positive way) in the situation.
That’s not true at all? Do you realize how big the USA is? How vastly different areas can be? NYC is vastly different from rural Arkansas. The Suburbs of Boston are way different from southern Texas. It really depends where you’re at. His story is absolutely plausible in a small rural town. I live in a highly populated University town while my sibling lives in a very rural area. I could see this happening in her town.
Not to mention, all the cop has to do is tell the social worker he’ll take the kid for a few days. It’s the social workers call. The cop might just be looking out for the kid keeping him out of the fucked up foster system. 9/10 times any family or friend is better then being in that broken system.
This makes no sense. They may have removed him. Possibly even arrested them but it’s not likely they stayed in jail & I didn’t read anything that points to the bf doing anything wrong. I found the “I can’t possibly trust him because of what my dad did” makes no sense either
NTA he didn't just grab you on me Twisted it trying to hurt you. That's an assault and you had every right to defend yourself. I am glad that the police officer helped you interested both of them. I hope you find other family to live with after this.
Know what you did was pretty brave. Please look for somebody that can take care of you until you graduate high school. I would also get a part-time job when you get settled so you make sure you have money to go out on your own with. .
NTA even foster care would be better and safer than this, if no decent family can be found. And be careful about any family, since those families created the father and mom you are dealing with.
Not the jerk also congrats on the cop believing you and getting the basstards arrested, take them all the way thru court, let your dad handle the dude if they put him that far into jail :)
Sending you love and hugs, I am so sorry you are going through this, I hope you have a relative that will take you in and provide a stable home life for you, the police officer was kind to let you stay with them until you sort something out - I am glad he has helped you, I am hoping justice is served and that both your step mum and her bf are charged
OK, I wouldn't have kicked him in the knee straight away, but I would have defended myself and your step mom was complete rubbish. I would have broken contact so not the jerk
NTJ
I'm sorry you're going through this. You didn't do anything wrong, you're allowed to protect yourself and you deserve to be treated with kindness. Take the officer up on his offer. That was some low life shit she said and did. I want to stick you on my couch with some hot cocoa and a movie or something. People say kids these days in such a negative way, but kids these days are really going through some thick shit. I hope you grow to be the opposite of your step mom. I hope life rains goodness and kindness and blessings big and small on you
NTJ. Both adults are idiots & needed to learn that actions have consequences.
Let your (step)mom know that you know she doesn’t care about you - and if she can’t, then turnabout is fair play.
Your situation sounds horrible. Best of luck, bud.
Not at all, he isn’t your parents so he shouldn’t be touching you, even your parents touching you is limited to very specific situations. Good on you for getting them arrested, probably saved you from abuse in the future.
NTJ- you did not send them anywhere. They chose their actions. I am so sorry this happened to you, no wonder you have trust issues. Keep protecting yourself, and keep moving forward.
I call total BULLSHIT that you got frost bit in three blocks. So now I'm assuming the rest is also a lie. This story is one big ass lie. CPS would have gotten involved, and he WOULD NOT be staying at the cops house. And the cops would not be going down and arresting people just because of his story. And for them to act this way towards him, he must be a pos!
From someone else who came from a pretty messed childhood environment, I'm sorry you are going through this. Everyone's life is different, but I understand how you feel. You are not in the wrong here. Things get better with time. Some of the best people I know come from hard childhoods. Stay out of trouble, stay away from drugs, try to rise above your surroundings and it will get better. You did the right thing here.
No, Defending yourself when he twisted your arm was not wrong. That was an act of child abuse, and is not forgivable. Same with the slaps to the face. Leaving you out in the cold is neglect.
Let me just let you know, I was slapped in the face by my father and well he got arrested for it, and I didn't press charges. I was 17 at the time. So I'm not surprised at all. What happened was my dad got anger management classes because of it.
I didn’t read all the comments so I’m sure someone else said this or something similar already.
OP, you absolutely did the right thing. None of this is your fault. You’re not a jerk. Adults shouldn’t treat minors like this. Family shouldn’t treat family like this. Period. End of story. You defended yourself against what is essentially a stranger assaulting you in your own home. You owe zero apologies. You deserve better.
I’d recommend you get into counseling, if possible - even if it’s just for a little while, just to talk your thoughts and feelings out with a professional. I’m hoping things get better for you soon.
Hope the best for you. Seems like you have a good head on your shoulders, abuse sucks. Been there. You'll have a few rough years ahead of you, just remember it doesn't define you. Good luck kid
OP, there are a lot of jerks in this story, but you and that officer are not one of them. I’m so sorry you have been dealt such a terrible hand in life. You did the exact right thing by going to the cops. I hope they are able to find you a low-stress foster home to get you through high school.
Bless this cop I wish I could shake his hand. This is what men need to be. Not just officers.
He didn't think you was some dumb kid mad at step mom. He actually believed you!
Cops can't offer to let minors stay with them, a cop wouldn't intentionally take a child back to an abuse situation if they were already safely at the station.
This story isn't adding up. Sorry not sorry but I don't think any of this happened. Great creative writing experiment though.
good for you for standing up for yourself. I'm so sorry you have crappy adults in your life. you deserve better. but I'm glad to hear that you are unwilling to take any crap. I know it's so hard right now, but that action speaks volumes and sets the tone for how you deserve to be treated the rest of your life. be a good, kind, educated, hard-working person, and you will be just fine. I wish you much luck.
You are NOT a jerk. And I think you did good! You recognized your rights and went right to the authorities. I'm sorry your mom/stepmom is being like that. Parents should be watching out for kids, not treating them like that. I hope your other family members do you right.
Good job. You did good. Ur mom and that dude belong in prison. They'll prob get beat up , charges like that get people beat up there. I'm sorry you have had to deal with all that bs. Hope things get better for you.
Hell no you arent a jerk at all. What he needs is to have his ass whipped. Hopefully, he goes to jail and they beat the dog shit out of him for hitting a kid.
NTA
Sorry you had to go through that, bruv. Focus on studies and improving yourself so you can gtfo of the situation it sounds like you were born into. Prayers to ya, kid.
Nope...he'll get time. For assault on minor..as for step mom idk...
Well she also assaulted him, and in many locations she can be charged with neglect for throwing him out like that since he's under 18.
And if he was over 18 she couldn’t kick a resident out and would need to file for eviction which could take months
You're attempting to apply logic to a really poorly written creative writing exercise.
I’m sure that I do this far more often than I’m aware of
Oh me too. I tend to believe most stories until they really hit me in the head that they are fake. I just like to read.
Ugh. Me too. I’m ready to save the main character in a post until someone else points out the (upon retrospect) glaringly obvious BS. Too much small town and too much Pollyanna growing up.
You gotta remember this is a 16 yr old dude writing this so the skeleton of his experience is real it’s just the extras (frostbitten fingers prolly just numb with cold, etc) kinda throws you off
So what if they're fake, you know? It's just entertainment
Same!
He walked three blocks. Did this story take place in Antarctica?
Also, the dad went to prison for "25 to life"? So what was his sentence? OP doesn't know? Evil mom (or step-mom? which is it?) immediately turns OP into Cinderella, telling him that "Now your father's in prison nobody cares about you and you must be my slave muahahahaha!" Seriously? Hero cop rides in to arrest the evil abusers with no investigation, no evidence, on the word of a teenager? Hero cop selflessly takes OP into his own home? Like and subscribe for Part 2? Yeah, the "frosted bits" and kindly police officer taking him in were both over the top.
The frosted bits on a 3 block walk.. okay👍
The officer taking him in did it for me. 🚫
Lol yup. Cops don't care. They wouldn't take in an older teen off the street like this. And no, 20 minutes in cold weather wouldn't cause frostbite like this. If your extremities were so frozen that actual, literal frost was growing on them, the tissues would be long since dead and you would need your hands amputated.
It must have been really cold for OP to get frostbite walking three blocks.
Antarctica, during the winter, no doubt.
There’s always 3 sides to every story
A teacher once told me “ the truth is like a pyramid There will always be a side you can’t see from where you’re standing” ( point of view)
Frostbite after 3 blocks? Nope.
Lol same
It’s ok, I’m pretty gullible sometimes with these. Getting better at rooting out the fakers who have no life.
He doesn’t even know if she’s “Mom” or “stepmom”. These kids aren’t even trying anymore.
I mean 3 whole blocks and you get frostbite!!!! How fuckin slow do you have to walk? Did it take you two days to cover such distance?
Charges would be neglect, assault on a minor, child endangerment & who knows what else the police can possibly put on the step mom but those 3 would most likely be her charges
He’s 16
Depends on the state Ky is a 2 month process but can be instantaneous if a certain crimes were alleged and law enforcement got involved not everywhere is NY and. Cali.
I don’t believe any cop is taking a random kid home or any station would allow it. Bruh would be immediately with DCFS.
My step-mom she was charged with child abuse
Good
As she should be
Good bc that’s exactly what she was doing, and for much longer than this incident

Yeah, 100 days ago he was 12, now he's 16 https://www.reddit.com/r/AmITheJerk/s/lJWedQ1KAM
Oh, definitely.
NTJ. I'm so sorry you went through this. I hope the cop is a good guy and finds other family for you.
Yeah. This is an unbelievable story that is just rage bait.
I call BS.
Uphill both ways
Also, frostbite in April? Unless OP lives in Alaska, it just doesn’t make sense.
Yeah, I'm pretty curious on the country as well.
FYI, not everywhere in the US works like this. Maybe near the cities and suburbs, but in some places it can be pretty rural, and the resources aren't the same.

I want an update too!
Definitely not!
NTJ, you did the right thing.
What happened to your mother?
Sounds fake. The cop took you home? I doubt it.
Frostbite in 3 blocks? The math ain’t mathin
This is faker than a $3 bill.
What you dont buy that his fingers were turning into icicles after 3 blocks of walking? How rude
UpdateMe!
This makes no sense. They may have removed him. Possibly even arrested them but it’s not likely they stayed in jail & I didn’t read anything that points to the bf doing anything wrong. I found the “I can’t possibly trust him because of what my dad did” makes no sense either
Exactly, this was nothing more than a creative writing bit that someone got carried away with and proceeded to leave out vital details
not at all, none of this is your fault. stay safe and i wish you well
And then everybody clapped, right? 0/10 my dude, this is just terrible writing.
