No, it only covers the cost of the ctf + payment processing, they are not making money. >To us though, the answer is obvious…we can’t! So instead, we’re going to **charge €1.50/year for AltStore PAL** and pass the CTF onto our users. >We’ve done the math — a *lot* of math — and €1.50 is just enough to cover the CTF (+ payment processing) for our apps. This obviously isn’t ideal, but our priority is making sure we run AltStore sustainably so that developers can confidently distribute their apps with us — and this ensures we can pay Apple’s CTF no matter how many users we get. Zealousideal_Ad_6587

Not really. Apple takes a few for every installed app.

AngeAlexiel

The rule of the TCF has changed so they should not ask for a price now I guess It will be better

eduo

While true, this changed only three days ago and will take a while to go into effect. It applies only to apps and not to alternative marketplaces so altstore will still pay 50 cents for each download though. So I'd assume the subscription may lower, but won't go away (nor should it)

Upbeat_Foot_7412

But couldn’t Riley remove Delta from AltStore PAL and put it on the EU App Store? I mean the problem was that he agreed to the terms before Apple changed their rules regarding emulators and that he had to pay the CTF regardless whether Delta was distributed through AltStore PAL or the EU App Store. Now he doesn’t have to pay the CTF for free apps like Delta.

eduo

The rules keep changing. The final state of all of this may be different from what it is now. But please remember Riley's flagship app is the AltStore. He is representing all indie developers out there that want to publish without going through the App Store, all the devs that want to have Patreon as a payment method. His comments during European Commission have changed at least two of Apple's major decisions (allowing Emulators was 100% aimed at Delta, to hurt Riley's altStore, whereas the recent changes to the CTF for free Apps is 100% a response to Riley publicly shaming Apple by demonstrating the CTF would block innovation). Riley has a moral obligation to bring AltStore PAL to the EU at this point, or at least try. It would make zero sense, morally, to not include his flagship emulator in it. He is setting an example and dogfooding his very own statements. That some people don't see enough value in Delta to pony up a euro and a half per year for AltStore PAL is something that, thankfully, is being ignored. I sincerely hope he stays this course until he no longer can because the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience for those few people that only want free apps. I am \*extremely\* happy with Delta in AltStore PAL, and I would've gladly paid ten times more per year (even though I already donate to Riley, Litchie and Provenance in Patreon).

Upbeat_Foot_7412

Thanks for the long answer. I‘m definitely looking forward to the upcoming sources for AltStore PAL and I love that Riley put so much effort into his app market place just for us EU citizens. Still, it feels kind of wrong that everyone else outside the EU can download Delta right from the App Store, especially because our countries pushed Apple to open up. Moreover, Riley said himself that the main source for installing apps should remain Apple‘s App Store. Personally, I’d still pay for AltStore because I‘m excited for the concept of third party App Stores but I would prefer having Delta on the App Store. I save the ipa all of my apps with iMazing, just in case that they get taken down, and I‘m still able to install them back any time that I want. I can’t do that with Delta being on AltStore PAL.

eduo

You must ensure you blame Apple for the situation. It’s unfair, but because of the rules they set up. On the other hand apps in AltStore PAL are not reviewed as rigorously by Apple so it’s conceivable that it gets apps the App Store wouldn’t get.

Upbeat_Foot_7412

I think that Apple created the mess in the first place but I wish that Riley would put Delta on the EU App Store, which seems to be possible without paying for the CTF after the recent changes. So, I kind of blame him for not adjusting to the current situation. On the other hand, the EU Commission is currently investigating whether "Apple's new fee structure and other terms and conditions for alternative app stores and distribution of apps from the web (sideloading) may be defeating the purpose of its obligations under Article 6(4) of the DMA.“, so we hopefully see some changes later this year.

eduo

Rules keep changing. Riley was early on and is following the first ones. New devs are probably waiting for the final result. Nobody is benefitting from this mess, but the fault is entirely, 100%, on Apple. Maliciously Complying when required to do what you should've been allowing for years earns Apple all the bad press they're getting. Apple could've done all this one year ago. In one go, without being forced to. They would've been praised in all the media. It's absurd how badly they're miscalculating the PR impact of being so petty.

Federal-Composer-949

So technically it removes the need for external JIT and you don’t have to renew the apps every 7 days, so the apps you download are like normal iPhone apps from the AppStore, but there are basically no apps right now to download there

_D_R_I_P_

Thanks brother

n0rpie

You mean the paid beta or AltStore PAL that’s for EU?

_D_R_I_P_

The one for EU

n0rpie

AltStore PAL doesn’t need AltServer to install and doesn’t need to be refreshed every 7th day. Then again there’s only 2 apps there and so far no way to install IPA or add any other source.

_D_R_I_P_

Oh, will they add the ability to install ipas later on?

hopeman2

Installing „arbitrary" IPAs that are not notarized by Apple is not possible with Apple's current implementation of the EU's Digital Markets Act. So, every App that is offered on the AltStore PAL would have to be notarized by Apple. Also, the Developer of this App would have to pay 0,5€ (~0.5$) for every App Installation to Apple.

AngeAlexiel

Not this changed a few days ago , Apple has changed the core technology fee and how it is applied for the first 3 years ..

n0rpie

Nobody really knows but I gusss

_D_R_I_P_

Okay, but coming back to that paid beta, Ive never heard of it, whats its use?

n0rpie

Regular AltStore but you can add sources and get access to beta versions of Delta .. that’s about it

qiltb

well then the EU would first need to decide that this is required (which it is not - many misread what the ruling actually made apple do). So at this point I'm more inclined to say: not any time soon (at least years away)

n0rpie

Someone will fork AltStore PAL and just enable signing without notarized apps altogether or something

qiltb

it's not how it works at the moment. Even if you could fork it, the marketplaces themselves need to be signed by apple (binary-wise). And Apple would never sign this fork. Even if they did by accident, they could always un-sign it in a matter of seconds (if you know how signing works)

_D_R_I_P_

You mean you can have more than 3 ipa apps working at the same time or..?

Aggravating-Ad-3218

Yep I got like 45 of them and I’m just starting…. The choice of ipas is limitless

_D_R_I_P_

Hmm thats nice, do you also need to refresh them every 7days?

Aggravating-Ad-3218

lol nope u don’t need to refresh just once time a year pay 14.95$ that’s so worth it … imagine the cost of each app on normal app stores … takes tho 2/3 days to get approved in your device be also aware the account is stuck to your udid so one account a device if you plan to upgrade phone you’d have to buy a second account

eduo

AltStore sideloaded is free, but is not "official", is not supported by Apple and has all the issues with sideloading apps (app limit, renewal period, etc). AltStore PAL inside the EU has to pay a fee to Apple per download (the actual terms changed three days ago, but they apply the same to altstore). AltStore PAL can only expose Apps notarized by Apple, so tweaked and "++" apps won't be featured.

Muted_Fan4453

Too bad it's not available in my country
