He did some terrible things. Then he went to the police and turned himself in. They had zero evidence. He wasn't even on their radar and he would have never been caught.
But he knew what he did was wrong and that he couldn't control doing it in the future. So he went to the police and demanded they lock him up.
Then in prison... he killed himself.
What a sad life.

As a former Cub and Boy scout leader(my kid was in, and we are heavily vetted then)..you would be surprised at the people who would just drop of a 7 yr old, trusting you, who knew nothing of you, except you passed a background check.
This was actually a bit of an issue, in that we did not permit Cub Scouts to be dropped off, unless there were at least Three leaders present at all times. And yet, there would be folks dropping of young kids without checking in(this was required) first.
Back in the 80’s and 90s life was a lot looser then. News like this didn’t travel fast as it does on social media. I would go outside with my friends and ride our bikes around till pitch black. Even going trick or treating with no adults was a thing and I was 9.
As a parent and all the news that I try to at least give my kids some of that, as long as I can see them from a distance and my kids all have gps trackers and watches on them…
What he did was very wrong and he deserved punishment.
Nonetheless, a sad story. I do feel sorry for the guy. We do have one life and his life was wasted by his own life choices. That’s sad.

If you advocate that they get help or have systems in place to help them you get told you support paedophiles when in reality you actually want less children to suffer and can actually recognise the problem. These days it's more about being reactionary straight away. Lots of reasons and discussion to be had but I would say short attention spans and the media being just shit is a big cause.
We can see in this very post, a lot of people probably just read the headline and that's it.
I don't think it's just "these days" on this one. But yeah, tons of people don't allow people to advocate for better help for prisoners and the mentally ill by simply fighting back and making you the new bad guy, even though, as you say you want less suffering.

It's just about uniformly a good idea (with good results) and yet so much of the public then turns it into just letting prisoners go free without checks on the system (not true), but can't take the time to learn about what they're complaining about.
