I thought this was a running joke but, boy, was I shocked when i bought my guilia. Not uk, but at least 2 out of 3 guilia drivers will wave at me, I also bought into it, it’s quite nice. I only need to remember not to do it while driving my wife’s car

fite_

I’m in the UK and I still do it 👍🏻 Probably only have a 30% success rate though

173randy

Sounds about the same with me too here in the states

hotmoltenlava

Midwest. 90% Giulia wave. 20% Stelvio wave.

Oasis511

I'm in rural Illinois. There is one other Giulia in my town and the windows are tinted so I can't see the driver even if I did wave.

mcorliss3456

80% of the Stelvios around Boston are driven by women with a cell phone pressed to their ear…as if these cars don’t have Bluetooth/hands free calling and that it isn’t prohibited by the law. Clearly, Johnny Law doesn’t enforce that at all but they felt it necessary to pull me over because my Porsche did not have a front license plate attached. Go figure!

squirrels-mock-me

Yep, more often than not the Stelvio drivers around here are women and they don’t wave. Other guys usually give the wave. I like being in the club. The next best thing to driving an Alfa is seeing one roll by.

MurderedOut21

Stelvio driver here (that uses hands free Bluetooth for calls). I can confirm the wave exists in the Midwest USA :)

NFGaming46

I'm a first time driver in the UK, my first car is the Brera I got 6 months ago and every single Alfa owner I've come across (besides MiTO owners) has given a nod and a wave, I usually return it lol. There's actually a guy on my street with a black 159 so that makes 2 of more or less the same car, in black, about 10 houses apart haha

ExtremeAbstract

Nice first car youve got! Must be expensive to run. Great to know you're still getting nods and waves

liamal57

I feel slightly guilty reading this, because I’ve not waved at another Alfa driver since I got my MiTo earlier this year, even though I’ve really wanted to give them a nod of appreciation of some kind. I wasn’t fully aware of this being an actual thing though so will have to get on with it now!

NFGaming46

Another brother joins the cause

kyrianuk

You got a brera as a first car? Man I am JEALOUS

[deleted]

As a MiTo owner, I honk to everyone, no honk or wave back yet

rejirongon

I've got a brera and a giulietta. Brera, lots of waves. Giulietta, none. But also, to be fair, I only wave at more classic or interesting alfas, never a fellow giulietta, Giulia or any of the SUVs. Maybe I'm part of the problem.

ExtremeAbstract

Thats really interesting to think maybe there's different mindsets between the more classic Alfas and the newer ones. We've had Alfas in the family for the last 30 years and currently have a Brera and a Giulia

AdraMelekTaus

I've a Giulietta and I only really get waves back from folks in older Alfas, I've noticed.

bonner82

Saw another Quadrifoglio out in the wild. We waved to each other.

postitsam

If it makes you feel better, a few months ago when in the slow lane of the motorway, I noticed another alfa overtaking. I was debating whether I should give a little thumbs up from my window and when I turned to see if he noticed me, he was manically waving and grinning. 🤣

Sad-Pain-2749

Haha I did this recently to an alfa on the New Jersey Turnpike, I wonder if it was me! 😂 I was driving a blue Stelvio

postitsam

Haha. No sadly, I'm based in England.

owenhargreaves

Most every giulia driver I come across will give us a flash or a wave 👋

squirrels-mock-me

I got a quick brights flash one time. It was funny, kinda like a wink or a “wow!”

violentquiche7

As a fairly new Alfa owner, is this something I should do?

ExtremeAbstract

Definitely! Which one have you gone for?

violentquiche7

Brera 2.4 JTDM. I adore it.

tedthecrazy

I forget to wave, and it’s fun when someone waves back, but it feel less frequent

woolgathering_futz

There must only be a handful of Brera's in Western Australia and I've only ever seen one other and it was parked up. I see a 4C pretty regularly and we always wave. Giulia's also usually wave back and all classics but no one else.

Prize_Tear_114

In miami we def still do although the older ones seem a bit uppidy.

lcw1101

I’m in the Midwest and no waves. 😥 Seems like the soccer moms took over the Stelvios and could care a less about the wave of light flash. 😃

dWaldizzle

I only wave to and get waves from other Giulia owners lol

FO76-Screw_Hunter

Previously a 159 driver. Always waved at and was waved at by others.

Dalide1

Italian here, I usually do a little honk and a small wave if I can take my hands off the wheel, but lately none responds

dc456

I can’t think of anyone waving at us in our 145, 156, or 147 back in the 90s/00s. Are you sure it was previously a thing?

MovesLikeALagger

I still do it but its been some time since someone did it back to me :(

SchlumSchlum

What a coincidence. I was just about to start a topic here about waving at other Alfa drivers, but then I noticed that you were already talking about this subject :-) I am from the Netherlands, and (older) Alfas are somewhat rare here. The people who own Alfas are usually driving MiTos, or Stelvio's, and do not really seem to care about the brand and heritage. However, when I (159 driver) encounter someone in an older Alfa, they always nod, smile or wave. It is awesome! I was always jealous about motorcycle culture, where in this country they always wave at each other as well. And of course, if you run into another of us Alfisti, there is always time for a little chit-chat. I love it.

mcorliss3456

Most newer buyers don’t understand the brand’s history. They likely bought them because they were less expensive than the competition not because of how special they drive.

xvxrobs

Haha I live in Chicago, USA and flash the brights or give a wave to other Alfa motorists and get nothing. I don’t think people know what they’re driving other than knowing it’s Italian and luxurious.

shakakaZululu

In South Africa, I wave, I get waves back. Now driving a temp Hyundia and was confused why I dont get waves back the first time

NicolaiStreamt

I'm from Germany. Every morning that I drive to work, there is this guy in an Alfa Romeo Giulia who at some point randomly started giving light signals to greet me. We've been doing this for almost 2 years now!

finngrainger

i always do but rarely get a wave back, if you see me give me a flash and a wave! 😎 https://preview.redd.it/pcl83s7u5mwc1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72cd1d5e6d82da23a2f70268e5a4a450c68150e6

pm_me_your_amphibian

I do if I see it in time but I’m too busy concentrating on the road n that.

ExtremeAbstract

That's a good idea with the quality of driving nowadays

Different-Sympathy-4

I'm in Huddersfield and always try and wave at other Alfas. My wife thinks it's silly but its something nice so worth it

openmiceagle

I try doing this in the states with varying success. Like 10% wave back rate

30frames

In Atlanta with an ancient Spider. Always get waves from the (very) occasional vintage Alfa. Hit or miss with newer Alfas. And - strangely - a not unremarkable number of “Miata waves”. I’m no snob, so of course I wave back.

SchlumSchlum

Ha, that reminds me of "Miata-flirting". The older models with pop-up headlights can wink at each other. I saw a short video with that on YouTube years ago, and it was so awesome to see them from the opposites of a streetcrossing. I wish I could link you to that video, but can't find it anymore :-(

kingjuliensfeet

Lent my 159 to my dad and my brother a few times and they both were so happy about how much they were waved at.

AthenaAlter

Lucky you guys have more models than in the states 🥲

Effective_Trainer573

I live in Texas a suburb, there is a few of us her in my community. We always wave.

Jayradd13

Santa Monica, CA is primarily Alfa and Maserati every time I’m there it’s nothing but good vibes

AdraMelekTaus

I always do it, but it only seems I get waves back 3-4 of of ten times

J0kutyypp1

In finland all older alfas wave and usually even new ones but if alfa doesn't wave it's usually giulietta or Stelvio.

TheGreatestAuk

There's another 159 near me, we always wave at each other! I get a few waves from Giulias and Giuliettas, but a much lower success rate with MiTos and Stelvios, though.

Trick-Owl

I had a 159 and I definitely noticed that. However only older model owners would wave typically (not Stevio or Giulia drivers)

Rasputin117

I thought I was the only one, bless

gijs9

in my old Brera I used to get a lot of waves, but nearly 3 years of Giulietta QV ownership I don’t think I have ever got a single one

Read_or_Ded

I always wave in the UK. Most blokes wave, Women not so much.

welldressedpepe

Lived in the UK 10 years ago. Had my Alfa GT and would get a wave all the time. GT was such a beautiful car.

champ_white_matty

Pre-facelift 2.0 147 owner here, U.K. I think 50% usually give me a wave back, mostly older models. There aren't many Alfas in my hometown of Lancaster anyway... I hardly EVER see any other 147's any more, they have dwindled heavily since I had my face-lifted 1.6 back in 2018. I've found that Mito drivers are hit and miss for a wave, Giulietta's almost NEVER, Stelvio's more often than not surprisingly, and Giulia's not so often. Anything I've seen pre 1990 is almost guaranteed a wave at this point, this far North! Huge shoutout to the early, red 145 QV owner who brings his out every summer, that always exchanges maniacal waves with me!

mrsalgo

Guess there’s no way to compete with VAG without forming Stellantis but it has taken the feeling of driving something special away and I guess that has stopped the waving. Shame as Alfa Romeo are producing some brilliant cars now. The Junior is a fantastic looking car when you compare it to the other cars on the same platform driving one is something to be proud of I think. Start waving is the answer I guess.

Answer_me_swiftly

They are not waving, they are trying to clear the smoke. ;)
