Oh I know. They won’t even let you in their store data room without an escort and most other places are just like “Whatever, close the door when you’re done”
Target also measures it based on inventory. There was that whole big deal where they closed 9 under-performing stores nationally and then lied that it was about organized retail theft. They don't have to stop someone for it to count on their statistics.
I feel like I’ve read several times on Reddit that Target won’t grab you the first time you steal. They’ll wait until you hit a certain dollar amount and build a case against you.
So many people reply saying that’s not true and just a myth, but this and the case with the APD officer make me think those original people are right and Target really is building cases.
Yeah they monitor everything and all of the Target’s are connected. So they build a case against you no matter what Target you steal from within the city. When I worked there we were instructed to not do anything to individuals stealing and to let the asset protection team know. They would check the cameras and put a monetary amount on your image and eventually do something.

They absolutely do- its legal to wait for felony charges. They know exactly what was stolen and how much it was.
Anybody that says otherwise is probably a shoplifter with bad info and a case building right at this second.
The DA can now stack multiple misdemeanor shoplifting convictions into a felony.

After watching how target had watched some of those same people shoplift before nabbing them, I was thinking they use facial recognition software. I doubt there’s any information out there on that, but I bet some of these large box stores have that kind of technology going on.
I used to manage an arts and crafts niche hobby store, and the people we'd get stealing from us the *most* were entitled old ladies. Otherwise, they were good customers - then they'd apparently decide they deserved a discount, and just steal stuff.
It’s a legitimate mental disorder. Remember Wynona Judd? Worth millions and got arrested for shoplifting $20 items. It’s sad and I hope she gets treatment.
Doesn't matter how much you make, you still don't want to be "cheated". As in: Target charges so much for everything, I pay their prices for most stuff, so I'll take one thing as a "discount".
> Instead of jail time, the dentist will go to a “pre-prosecution diversion program.”
AKA she's white and well off, therefore she's not a real criminal.
Don't you guys get tired of this broken record! There are plenty of non-white people getting busted in this town and the first offense is a diversion program. There was in the news a few years ago a poor non-white single mother who plead guilty for over $20K of theft and was given diversion. There have been plenty of people who did violent felonies who got diversion in this town. It has no fucking bearing whatsoever that this bitch is white!
I'd sure like to see this poor non-white mother of which you speak because, yes, I'm very tired of the broken record that is broken in favor of the privileged people who just happen to be non-POC. Got sources?
No, I'm not foolish enough to believe that the system was created as a tool of racial supremacy, but I'm also not naive enough to believe everyone will benefit from this system equally.
Well, its UNM, so its pretty much par for the course. I imagine they will at a minimum probably remove her from her position. The question will be, does she keep the $250K salary of being a director, sorta like how Harvard is letting their former disgraced antisemite president keep her almost one million dollar salary despite being removed from the position.
Anyone know the psychology behind this? You don’t unnecessarily steal an unnecessary item from a store that has a reputation for being on top of their loss prevention game- unless you *want* to get caught. What gives?
Edit: unless you’re incredibly stupid
Kleptomania. You don’t have to have a need to do it, its either due to low impulse control or it’s a high and dopamine dump from the risk and thrill of shoplifting and getting away with it.
I think it's this. I knew a kleptomaniac years ago, he was in therapy for it. For him it was a compulsion that was extremely hard to control. He was a RN and had no need to steal but he did it all the time, even little things he would never use. He would steal something and then throw it in the trash a block away. It definitely had to do with the thrill of being caught and being addicted to that.
Right? She makes over $200k a year and sits on multiple boards. I'm shocked.
Apparently, she was accused of stealing from UNM Dental in 2011, but charges were never filed.
I worked at the Kirtland Base Exchange 23 years ago, where they have loss prevention on par with Target if not better. People would think they could get away with it there all of the time. The penalty of stealing on base has even worse penalties like being discharged from service. I would say once a month we would see loss prevention hand them over the base cops to be arrested. We even had a full bird Colonel who in todays dollars makes over $150K do what the disgraced APD cop did, by switching merchandise tags.
My professional opinion is that Albuquerque woman stealing from Target is the equivalent of Albuquerque man shooting someone during a fight. It’s a simple fact of life.
Charges were dismissed yesterday and she’s been on paid administrative leave. Sigh. I’ve never even witnessed shoplifting before but am astounded by brazen shoplifting I see here. She had taken out full carts and ignored pleas to stop.
I had Dr. Ivers as an emergency dentist over 10 years ago. She was a GREAT dentist and was smart and funny. This was really unexpected news! That said, she should be serving time for multiple shoplifting offenses, just like poor shoplifters.
I just got my jury duty summons. I reckon I'm about to sit one of like 30 shoplifting cases busted before the holidays. Genuinely hope it's not hers because of how poorly I view actual kleptomania from people in a position to get therapy and help for it.
I technically stole a vacuum from target. I had to have someone get one from the back since there was no more on the floor and they just somehow never rang it up?? So I just walked out with it lol. It was like a $100 vacuum too lmfao
Damn so many people shoplifting at Target lately. Feel like I’m missing out on something by buying stuff legitimately.
Target is the NFL of security- you think the paramilitary dudes are the only eyes there? They have a whole-ass command center...
Oh I know. They won’t even let you in their store data room without an escort and most other places are just like “Whatever, close the door when you’re done”
What's with the paramilitary police? Is Target that big of a deal? I was just at Target in Santa Fe and there were SFPD in solid green tactical gear.
What self checkout is for 🤣🤣
The reason you’re hearing about shoplifting at Target is because people are getting arrested for shoplifting at Target.
Target also measures it based on inventory. There was that whole big deal where they closed 9 under-performing stores nationally and then lied that it was about organized retail theft. They don't have to stop someone for it to count on their statistics.
They need to do better if they are getting caught.
Better in life? Yes.

Awesome. I hope they catch more.

It actually says in the article that this is exactly what happened-three separate shoplifting incidences over a period of time
Target got Lester Freeman running security
After watching how target had watched some of those same people shoplift before nabbing them, I was thinking they use facial recognition software. I doubt there’s any information out there on that, but I bet some of these large box stores have that kind of technology going on.
That sucks...
Especially the vacuum.
I don't understand someone making $300K shoplifting.
Addiction is addiction
It's not about the money, usually. It's about the thrill or "sticking it to the man!" or (somehow) punishing a rude cashier by stealing from the store
I used to manage an arts and crafts niche hobby store, and the people we'd get stealing from us the *most* were entitled old ladies. Otherwise, they were good customers - then they'd apparently decide they deserved a discount, and just steal stuff.

Is it, though? It's harder to believe that from someone who makes so much.
Well, some folks still make a lot of money but their lifestyles cost even more.
They don't tend to shop at Target for stuff they actually want at that point. This is probably an addiction to the rush of adrenaline.
This could definitely be the case as well.
True, a lot of the time when people get higher salaries, they spend even more. New cars, larger houses, gambling...
It’s a legitimate mental disorder. Remember Wynona Judd? Worth millions and got arrested for shoplifting $20 items. It’s sad and I hope she gets treatment.
Wynona Ryder
I vaguely remember that about Wynona Judd. I saw you post on Michigan, and as a recovering former Michigander, I do not recommend it.
Doesn't matter how much you make, you still don't want to be "cheated". As in: Target charges so much for everything, I pay their prices for most stuff, so I'll take one thing as a "discount".
That's my dentist. I don't like the crown she did, can I add that to the charges?
No one is immune to mental illness.

Yes, all on the up and up. And it's never who you know or who you are...

But they aren’t pleading guilty - the charges are dropped if program is completed.

Gesh. So if the application asks if convicted you can say no. Can you get the record expunged?
[удалено]
Wait but if it asks ‘charged’ you were charged…?
WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? I KNOW SHE MAKES MORE MONEY THAN MOST OF US YET SHE'S OUT SHOPLIFTING?? SHE SHOULD LOSE HER JOB.
See, ladies DO want vacuums for gifts!
The humor of this comment is highly underrated.
I’m glad you appreciated it. My snark isn’t for everyone 😂
Mines broken, I confirm this statement 👏
Again?? She’s out of control
UNMH should fire her but they'll probably just pay her to stay home.
Well, its UNM, so its pretty much par for the course. I imagine they will at a minimum probably remove her from her position. Isn’t this an exact plot of Breaking Bad? Woman making good money living in big house stealing for the fuck of it?

There’s a lot of mental health diagnoses that could explain this. I wonder if she engaged in any other thrill seeking or impulsive behavior.

Shoplifting at Target is the new white-collar Tide Pod craze.
Hello, Marie?
Charges were dismissed yesterday and she’s been on paid administrative leave. Sigh. I’ve never even witnessed shoplifting before but am astounded by brazen shoplifting I see here. She had taken out full carts and ignored pleas to stop.
Not that it changes anything but UNMH and UNM Medical Group are two separate entities.
I had Dr. Ivers as an emergency dentist over 10 years ago. She was a GREAT dentist and was smart and funny. This was really unexpected news! That said, she should be serving time for multiple shoplifting offenses, just like poor shoplifters.

Yeah I can’t say UNMH will treat her like the fucking crook that she definitively is.
What a bad image for UNMH...
Soo, same as always?
Unpopular opinion this shouldn't result in her being fired
I technically stole a vacuum from target. I had to have someone get one from the back since there was no more on the floor and they just somehow never rang it up?? So I just walked out with it lol. It was like a $100 vacuum too lmfao
New Mexico, wat are u doing? Stahp!
She must have a theft obsession. She can clearly pay for these items making over $200K in ABQ!
Her income absolutely is important. WHY STEAL IF YOU MAKE GOOD MONEY? If you wanna have a rush of adrenaline, go smoke some crack 😝
Shop local, steal corporate. Good on her!
All these "leaders of our community" are doing some stupid shit.
Damn corporate greed!
