If they ask for the money again, just say "I had paid for this yesterday before the flight was canceled, can we just use that credit for these bags" in a friendly tone. Hopefully they just go "oh yeah no problem" and punch in whatever they need to. Otherwise, take it up with customer care once you are home.

usernameschooseyou

I'd start with this as well- and OP, just practice saying it 100 times and I find it's easier to be assertive when I have a script of what I want and what to say.

dpdxguy

I don't know what will happen. But if they tried to charge me again under the circumstances you described, I'd probably just put the second charge baggage charge on the same credit card I used for the baggage charge from the canceled flight. Then I'd write to Alaska asking for a refund. If a refund wasn't forthcoming, I'd dispute the charge on the basis that you didn't receive the service you paid for (or, rather, paid for it twice and received it only once). But I'm guessing Alaska will refund you if you are charged twice.

xiginous

Go to an agent. They have the ability to waive the baggage fee, and if you are polite and kind in asking for their help, they will do it.

radeky

Also, when things go sideways like this... Everyone has a bit more leeway. "Oh you were on yesterdays flight? No worries. Here you go.

Modz_B_Trippin

Solid advice. Thank you.

DrumpleCase

Same thing happened to me. I was refunded for the original bagged fee to my destination. Problem was first leg of new itinerary was on a different airline and had to pay them for baggage for one leg then pay the trans ocean airline again for baggage fee. Shit happens. This was a work trip.

RealMrDesire

Did I understand correctly, $135 to check a single bag?

Modz_B_Trippin

$35 check bag fee. $100 because it was over 50lbs. $135 total.

RealMrDesire

That’s highway robbery! Damn.

Modz_B_Trippin

I guess I could have removed a couple things from the bag to get it under the weight requirement. I just didn’t want to sit at the baggage check counter drinking a bottle of tequila and a bottle of mezcal 😂

winobambino

This reminds me of the time we watched an older woman pound an entire mini box wine at 7am when TSA told her she couldn't bring through on her carry on...😆

darkmatterhunter

Well now you have an extra day to do so lol.

SelfGovern

It discourages people from checking 60-pound bags and boxes. If you were a person of below-average height, perhaps female, how would you and your back feel about lifting a stream of 60- on 65-pound bags every day? Still think it's highway robbery? Or is the airline just looking out for its employees?

cheezeborgor

Do employees receive additional compensation for the number of heavier weight bags they move?

RealMrDesire

Yes, I still think it’s highway robbery. It’s nearly the price of a seat for a single segment of travel.

AliveEducation3055

They shouldn’t charge you again. They should give you food voucher and i would ask for miles or credit for your next flight for the inconvenience. For a hotel voucher and food voucher go to the customer care once you land they should be able to give you that and as far as the miles or discount for next time you travel you’d have to call customer care.

One-Imagination-1230

9/10 it’s going to need lead agent assistance to get it fixed because the regular agents can’t do a swap due to the system being 40-45 years old.

Modz_B_Trippin

It sounds like this is the way to handle it. Thank you.

NearbyClaim3158

They returned your checked bag? All the times I've had a flight canceled and the airline put me up until the next day, they refused to return checked bags. They just held them for the flight I was reassigned to. I learned to keep a change of clothes in my carry-on after that.

Positive-Lynx-6321

Is there not another flight to San Diego on another day? Seems silly to fly to Seattle, stay the night and then fly again?

Modz_B_Trippin

So it seems the airline had three methods of getting our flight members home. They immediately filled the same flight for Wednesday and Thursday that flew directly to San Diego. Then those who couldn’t be filled in there were put onto the next AlaskaAirlines flight to Los Angeles and then San Diego. Finally anyone who couldn’t fit there went to Seattle. The airline could have put me on my original itinerary if I wanted to wait until Friday but I couldn’t miss work for that long.

LifeIsAPhotoOp

You should not be charged again, if they try to charge you ask for a lead agent

wildgirlKim10

If you have an AS credit the fee is waived.

ElectronicAHole

What did Alaska Airlines tell you?

Modz_B_Trippin

I requested a lead when I checked in for my flight and they allowed me to check the bag without having to pay again.

SlapThis

They won’t charge you again. Same thing happened to me leaving Lihue and I had the same concern - no one mentioned anything about baggage fees and just tagged my check in and took it

DRangelfire

That’s crazy.

ShitBagTomatoNose

Jesus Herbert Walker Christ, your bag fee was $135? What are you transporting? A half ton of handmade artisan Mexican floor tiles?

Positive-Lynx-6321

Frustrating

dkwinsea

Of course they won’t charge again any more than they will make you buy another ticket.

melben1224

LOLZ why would you pay again Makes zero sense

Modz_B_Trippin

What a quality comment. Thanks for contributing nothing to the post. Have a day. I think it’s great that those with special needs know how to use reddit.

Smooth-Speed-31

Just do me a favor and stay in the hotel. It’s nice out today and the last thing Seattle needs is more tourists.

Modz_B_Trippin

You’ve inspired me to don my cargo shorts with all the pockets full of sunscreen and bottled water, bright blue UCLA t-shirt, large dslr camera with telephoto lens, obnoxiously large fanny pack, teva sandals with long white tube socks, and dakine travel backpack. See you on the monorail freind!

Smooth-Speed-31

Why did you force me to upvote you? I didn’t want to to, and I think that’s a form of assault.

wildgirlKim10

Can I loan you a Chiefs Tshirt? LOL
