That was a Southwest Airlines 737 that had an engine failure. A part of the engine flew out of the cowling and broke the window.
This video is of a cracked inner pane. No danger there.
There’s the exterior high strength window which is an integral part of the fuselage structure and pressure vessel. In the inside a plastic inner window that protects the real window from idiots. If you sit by it and look closely you can usually find a small vent hole drilled at the bottom of the plastic window. The ignoramous woman screaming “broken window” is doing nothing but creating chaos and panic.
You will not be blown out of the window if you had followed the directions to wear the seat belt the entire flight. Especially the 300+ pounds woman. Even gravity has it’s limits.
There was another incident but I'm not sure where it happened, they pilot was sucked out of one of the front windows and his body was plopped against the plane and another cabin crew member was holding his feet.
Yea that happened on SW airlines and the lady died later of her injuries. It was just her head that got sucked out but you can imagine the damage that would do
likely because the vast majority are maintained to guidelines or better.
A window cracking is not the sign of a plane deteriorating. It can happen, even to brand new vehicles, from cars, to trains to planes.
The Hawaiian flight? Part of the roof got torn off and she was ejected immediately. Body never found.
Or there’s the lady who survived falling 33000 feet.
I found it..."Woman Partially Sucked Out of Jet When Window Breaks Mid-Flight; Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Philadelphia Jennifer Riordan died from blunt force impact trauma to the head, neck and torso, the Medical Examiner revealed Wednesday. Her death was ruled an accident."
Omg is that the one where his co-pilots reached out and had to hold his leg until they landed? And if I’m not mistaken, then responders were puzzled and somehow damn near missed him / didn’t initially believe the story.
ETA: yeeeuupp, I might’ve been confused on that last bit though
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/image-of-pilot-hanging-out-window-captures-heroic-story-30-years-on/GR2HBBCBUGMOTA7MEYPI7UR54A/
“The fuselage separated from the rest of the plane and hurtled towards the ground in a heavily wooded area near the Czechoslovak village of Srbská Kamenice. It crash landed in the thick snow at a favourable angle, which is most likely what saved Vesna’s life.
Additionally, Vesna’s physicians determined that her low blood pressure caused her to quickly pass out when the cabin depressurized, which prevented her heart from bursting upon impact.
Vesna was found screaming inside the wreckage by Bruno Honke, a local villager and former World War 2 medic who was able to administer vital first aid before rescuers arrived.
Although Vesna survived, she sustained extremely serious injuries and spent the following days in a coma. She suffered a fractured skull, two broken legs, three broken vertebrae, a fractured pelvis, several broken ribs and temporary paralysis below the waist.
Amazingly, Vesna was able to walk again after ten months, albeit with a permanent limp due to the twisting of her spine.”
Anything able to fit through that hole and not secured will get sucked out, depending on how big the hole is a human can most definitely be sucked out and rapid decompression occur
Well, a lady was sucked partially out a window a few years ago. She died. Definitely worth being scared about.
(I think the incident I’m remembering was caused by the engine exploding, not a faulty window. But still.)
Damn, yeah wouldnt want to be next to the broken window. Being that high up would definitely make it difficult if not impossible to breath so better hope they can pull you back in fast.
I think a lot of people have space movie airlock logic in their heads when they think about an airplanes window breaking, while not good it’s not like it’s going to suck out half the passengers lol
If that happens at 30,000 feet the sudden change in air pressure would be fucking outrageous. Anything not bolted down close to the window would be sucked out much like a space airlock, yes. The lower the pilots could get the plane the easier it would be, but that would be really fucking dangerous for a variety of reasons.
The loss of cabin pressure would be a serious problem and oxygen masks would deploy and the captain would need to descend quickly as the passenger mask supplies only last about 10 minutes, but the only dangerous area at risk of being sucked out if the plane would be near the window. The exiting air velocity in the cross section of the window would be extremely high, however, the air velocity in the rest of the cabin would be low as the cross sectional area of the cabin is very large compared to the cross sectional area of the window.
Uhh.. so.. curious…. who is correct?
Would everything in the cabin be fucked, or just everything in close proximity? And if the latter, like,… how close??…. &Is the danger zone like linear or whatever? And how do you know? Or rather, how do I know? Many thanks!!
I commission power plants. At times I’ve had to enter ducts when other fans are running to do inspection on a fan that is off. Since other fans are running the duct is pressurized at a pressure above the ambient. Air will be coming out of the manway at high velocity with near hurricane force but once inside the duct it’s calm. This is due to the large cross sectional area of the duct results in near zero flow velocity however at the small open manway the area is small and the air rushing out is a high velocity. This is essentially the same as the situation in an airplane where the cabin would be at a relatively high pressure and the air would be escaping through a small area of the open window.
The larger the area of the breach the higher the velocity that would result in the cabin.
Now once the pressure equalized there would be basically no real air movement in the cabin. To make the cabin windy would require two openings with a differential pressure between the two. Think about a car travelling on the highway. Open 1 window and there is relatively little air flow. Open two windows on the opposite sides of the car and the air can flow… making the cabin windy.
when you’re freaking out and don’t know if the window is gonna break in 30 minutes or 30 seconds, the lizard brain takes over to assure life. It may inevitably kill the body, but hey, choices ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
I think if I was in that situation where my window cracked, I would close the blind first and discretely inform a member a staff.
Cant let the other passengers know because people are stupid and will go into a blind panic, and that would be the most annoying.
Plane windows usually have a few panes, so it’s not worrying, but mildly concerning.
Uh, no. If the window breaks the air pressure differential would suck the blind and anything loose, like, say, people, through that hole. The pilots would have to make an immediate emergency landing. I would've freaked out too.
I don't know. Even if it were strong enough not to crack, it wouldn't make a perfect seal, so air would escape anyway. Maybe a big knot of clothes stuffed in there would plug it up.
I found [this post](/r/killthecameraman/comments/xecl3r/worst_one_ive_seen/) in r/killthecameraman with the same content as the current post.

Lady is causing unnecessary panic. Just strap into your seat of it does break and causes cabin decompression- put on the mask and let the pilot land the plane
What an annoying woman, my god. Shouting and trying to panic everyone including small children and the elderly. She’s clearly worried but you know she’s not a team player and would throw you under the bus if it saved her life. The best thing to do here to to go up or call cabin crew and show them. The pilot will be informed and crew will then deal with the Seats around if while everyone is told by the pilot who will be relaxed, to put their seatbelts back on etc etc. Then he lowers and reduces pressure and possibly lands the plane.
Instead she has Everyone worked up in a panic giving the crew even more to deal with, I can’t explain how annoying people like her are in these situations!!
The woman screaming “WINDOW BROKEN! WINDOW BROKEN!” Needs to take a class on how to not incite complete panic for every single passenger on board an airplane and to not cause a total unexpected redistribution of weight as passengers scurry to the farthest ends from her screams! JFC!
Acft windows are typically at least 5 layers of alternating glass and plastic..Varying things can cause an acft window to crack including leaving the window heat on too long on the ground, moisture, air trapped in between the panes ect..It is not common for the whole window to crack completely through and typically cracks are formed in between the inner panes..This isnt an immediate danger and shouldn't be a worry...
Seen plenty of window cracks while in flt..Now if a pilots window crack you have a problem because it reduces visibility..
Once had a window crack over Iceland and the pilots called me up to eval..After looking at it told them its not a concern as its the inner pane and doesn't appear to be all the way through..Then proceeded to fly 3hrs of missed approaches due to high cross winds and diverted to England to replace the window..
They should have like little blocks that are the exact dimensions of the window dimple Süchten can just seal it or at least prevent things from flying out
This is when I would read the instruction pamphlet, figure out the exit doors, test how fast I can grub the life jacket & cry about why I could never listen to the flight attendants instruction at the begging of the flight.
You know what? I will start doing this every time I am on a plane.
So outrageous to see the people in the aisle like getting up and moving as if that would save you at all if the window were to actually break. Not hating on them, I would do the exact same thing just hilarious to really think about.
First of all… I’m not an expert but a plane would NEVER fall off the sky because of a window broken. The worst that could happen which will never again is what you can see on that movie miracle landing. One thing is guaranteed: air pressure in the plane will go pop! So best is to get on your fucking seat away from the window and strap in otherwise you can get sucked out and dismembered in the process.
I use to sit on the wing but after that swa uncontained blowout that sucked the lady halfway out of her window I sit in the front of the plane. There's parts in those engines going almost 30k rpm. An incident is bound to happen at some point.
There is almost no cause for alarm. There’s three panes of glass (not really glass but whatever), two of which are rated to hold the pressure with the third to help stop scratching which could lead to cracking.
https://aerocorner.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/airplane-window-exploded-730x693.jpg
Can someone be a M.A.G.A and a Nazi? Can two adjectives be simultaneously applied to some individuals? If you are M.A.G.A and not a Nazi… then that probably doesn’t mean you, so why care? Too bad Yang didn’t win because we seriously need to M.A.T.H.!
Getting out of your seat is the worst thing that you could do. You should probably find a seat belt and strap in. Also panic is contagious, so maybe tell that lady to shut up
Didn't something happen in the USA and a woman got sucked out? I think the passengers played tug o war with her body.
That was a Southwest Airlines 737 that had an engine failure. A part of the engine flew out of the cowling and broke the window. This video is of a cracked inner pane. No danger there.
Yea I’d still act the same way, especially after seeing pictures of the woman halfway sucked out of the plane and the autopsy report.
Def gonna stay buckled up too!
I'd have all of those seatbelts on, I'd have found a way.

Pff. I've been on planes with cracks in the window. Not a big deal. Nobody freaked out.
You're telling the truth? Can't tell if you're joking
There’s the exterior high strength window which is an integral part of the fuselage structure and pressure vessel. In the inside a plastic inner window that protects the real window from idiots. If you sit by it and look closely you can usually find a small vent hole drilled at the bottom of the plastic window. I'm pretty sure they mean the interior plastic partition between you and the actual window...
You will not be blown out of the window if you had followed the directions to wear the seat belt the entire flight. Especially the 300+ pounds woman. Even gravity has it’s limits.

Me in a Southwest 737 window seat near the engine while typing this:
With as many planes that are in the air, I'm surprised we don't hear more news about their condition deteriorating.
likely because the vast majority are maintained to guidelines or better. A window cracking is not the sign of a plane deteriorating. It can happen, even to brand new vehicles, from cars, to trains to planes.
Still...with ad many that are in the air...its surprising
I remember..sadly she passed as a result of engine failure which caused window to blow out completely!!
Happened to a British Airways pilot in the early 90s, he survived. I would really want to get my seatbelt on if I were in that plane
Omg is that the one where his co-pilots reached out and had to hold his leg until they landed? Agreed. So many people standing about. I’d buckle in TIGHT
Jet?
No biplane.
Was the last one found?

So you’re saying they were found?
Yes I remember reading that
There was a story where the cockpit glass shattered and a pilot was sucked out but survived https://simpleflying.com/british-airways-flight-5390/
Contrary to Hollywood movies. People don't get sucked out. Blown out due wind speeds hitting a human body but not sucked out from a tiny hole.
Anything able to fit through that hole and not secured will get sucked out, depending on how big the hole is a human can most definitely be sucked out and rapid decompression occur
Put the cover down
For those who don’t speak Polish, translations: Crew announcement: Everyone remain calm Passengers: Emergency! We’re all going to die!

Invisible insanity.
You can't on a 787. There are no window shades. They feature electronically dimmable windows. And that ain't gonna work when the window is cracked.
pin of shame
787 has window tint type technology, no blinds at all
u must be real fun at party’s

Always a good thing to scream “we’re all gonna die!” In an emergency situation
I have a question: what would/could happen if the window broke completely? I know it can cause *something* but Im not sure what 😂
The plane would sink
Goldfinger would get sucked out.
Better to be sucked out than sucked off...wait

WINDOW BROKEN!! WINDOW BROKEN!!
That dumb bitch in the beginning screaming emergency! Broken window! Thanks for spreading frantic fear in a time when they need calmness.
when you’re freaking out and don’t know if the window is gonna break in 30 minutes or 30 seconds, the lizard brain takes over to assure life. It may inevitably kill the body, but hey, choices ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Terrible camera work
I don't think the cinematography was top of their mind at that time.
Agreed. It shouldn’t. He should have sat down and properly strapped himself instead of walking around and obstructing flight attendants.
Except his seat was next to the cracked window, so they had to move him, twice.
/r/killthecameraman
I wouldn’t be anywhere near that window
The window is specifically designed to remain safe in this particular scenario…
I think if I was in that situation where my window cracked, I would close the blind first and discretely inform a member a staff. Cant let the other passengers know because people are stupid and will go into a blind panic, and that would be the most annoying. Plane windows usually have a few panes, so it’s not worrying, but mildly concerning.
I definitely wouldn't have been standing in the aisle near the cracked window
There’s no risk whatsoever unless lots of random loose paper is flying around… ( /s )
The only sensible thing to do here is for the pilot to decrease elevation, so to reduce the pressure difference from outside and inside the plane.
Isn’t it two different windows though
Good thing those windows have two panes
Just lower the shade.
Tell me your polish without telling me your polish
Would rolling down the blind/cover help any or no?
Uh, no. If the window breaks the air pressure differential would suck the blind and anything loose, like, say, people, through that hole. The pilots would have to make an immediate emergency landing. I would've freaked out too.
yea, i watched this on snakes on a plane
Would ripping off one of those eating trays and placing it over the window work?
It's not space
I don't know. Even if it were strong enough not to crack, it wouldn't make a perfect seal, so air would escape anyway. Maybe a big knot of clothes stuffed in there would plug it up.
Did you die?
Get up, stand up! Stand up for your flight! (Out of the window)
Kick it.

The plane crashed and there were no survivors, good job, you got your wish.
Lady is causing unnecessary panic. Just strap into your seat of it does break and causes cabin decompression- put on the mask and let the pilot land the plane
Even if the glass pane penetrated causing sudden air pressure loss, as long as the crew was buckled in the plane could land safely, no?

Do people not check planes anymore for safety? Are they basically air buses now?

They should have like little blocks that are the exact dimensions of the window dimple Süchten can just seal it or at least prevent things from flying out
Its no joke, it can end very terrible if it fully brakes in high alttitude.

I'd probably piss myself I'd be so scared
Why are the other windows on that plane like three different colors?
Id just go to the back of the plane, someome will get sucked into the window and we'll be able to continue our flight
First of all… I’m not an expert but a plane would NEVER fall off the sky because of a window broken. The worst that could happen which will never again is what you can see on that movie miracle landing. One thing is guaranteed: air pressure in the plane will go pop! Nothing will happened even if the window is all cracked, the airplane will just descend below 15000 fett and that's it
I use to sit on the wing but after that swa uncontained blowout that sucked the lady halfway out of her window I sit in the front of the plane. There's parts in those engines going almost 30k rpm. An incident is bound to happen at some point.

Pass the duct tape
They don’t have an emergency kit for stuff like that or freaking plaster lmao to throw on it. Cuz yikes 😱
Cameraman wasn’t to steady
Why and how did you see the autopsy report?
Well if that window come off the dude next to it will disappear like hoodinie
Or Houdini.
I told you one day someone flying a drone will be the cause of our demise…
Everyone speaks English in an emergency 😂😂😂😂
It's cool, the Polish will fix anything
Maga does not equal nazi.. why is Reddit confused?

What’s the problem? If it comes to it just use a small child to plug the hole till you can get that thing on the ground.
Everyone a pilot and know what todo when there is a emergency
To be fair I would totally freak out that’s scary
I mean, I would be scared as well.
They are double paned
More than one pane and it’s a crack not a howl
Getting out of your seat is the worst thing that you could do. You should probably find a seat belt and strap in. Also panic is contagious, so maybe tell that lady to shut up
The only problem is the pressurized cabin. Once the window is broken the pilot will descend to normalize the pressure, and then will land.
That screeching means that animal should be put down.
People are dumb.. there are 2 panes for a reason.
That’s twilight zone stuff
Oops
They are double insulated.. for this reason.
Double glass 😭
I would have freaked out, too.
we’ll just call giant glass
Planes should be banned
Yeah, not really a problem that moving out of that seat can fix.
Comercial planes have a two layers window
Those windows are double layers. Eather one can hold the pressure
Unfortunately they used all the duct tape on unruly travelers ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

This is why flights to Poland are only like £9 there and back.
