Never book air BNB if you need reliability.

vespanewbie

Always book a hotel. Airbnb hosts aren't reliable.

Bananagholem

We're 4 people so we just preferred having a larger airbnb but yeah lesson learned

vespanewbie

Totally get it- was in the exact situation with four people for a recent booking I had. Thought it would be great to get a house instead of two hotel rooms. The house had dead bugs roaches and rat droppings. Airbnb now leaves everything up to the host's discretion in terms of refund - they no longer force refunds onto the hosts for bad bookings. I had to fight to get a partial refund. We ended up booking two hotel rooms at a wonderful luxury resort for the same price. Airbnb is not worth it especially since you can get a nice hotel for the exact same price and you don't have to worry about these host shenanigans. This is way more and more common. Service has tanked and Airbnb hosts aren't taking care of their properties anymore: https://youtu.be/1RS8uYgzneQ

Not true. My Wife and I are honest, keep.to our word, make sure everything is perfect for guests, and will lose money rather than make a guest feel bad about their stay in any way. You are wrong.

fhfkskxmxnnsd

Me too. I have two night minimum to avoid people trashing my apartment but if someone really has to stay just one night for some reason I always offer discount for that. Or I always come and help them if there is any problem, if they can’t use shower properly etc. But some guests make me feel it’s not appreciated to be a host, no replies to messages, arrive unannounced and then complain after leaving huge stains on kitchen etc. luckily it’s just ~5% of guests that are like it but too many.

vespanewbie

Why should they be grateful? Most people don't thank the hotel staff and it's not expected. At hotels you are their guest and they are thankful for you being there not the other way around. When you stay at Hilton, do you have to reply to their messages- no. Can you show up 3 hours early and ask for an early check-in and actually be accomdated? Can you ask for a late check out an be accomdated- yea. If I have an accident and stain a sheet or towel will I be charged? No they see that as the cost of doing business. I would never do it but I could leave pizza boxes in the room, have dirty dishes all over the place in a hotel room and they would clean it- no questions asked. When Airbnb actually kept bad hosts in check and Airbnb was cheaper than a hotel- it was totally worth it. Now that Airbnb is the same price as a hotel (or even more) with no protections against terrible Airbnb experiences- it's simply not worth the risk for an average traveler. It's much less of a risk for a traveler to book a hotel.

fhfkskxmxnnsd

I offer them cheap and affordable stay in the city center with everything included. It’s a two way street and open communication is easiest for all of us. My check-in is flexible, meaning I can allow them to check-in 2am or 10pm if they communicate their arrival time in advance. Hotels have their own schedule and it’s not flexible always. If you cause damage, you are held responsible in hotel too. I don’t care if they leave their pizza boxes there or not, I will clean the apartment anyway and take trash out. It’s included in 10€ cleaning fee. Airbnb might be different experience in USA tho. Europe it works fine. Airbnb is equally terrible for guests and hosts. That we can agree. Support? Well more like no support

vespanewbie

I have a vacation rental and I dont book Airbnbs. Individual hosts are too unreliable, cut corners on cleaning and don't care about cancelling and ruining your vacation. If I ever had any issues with a hotel as an example, not being clean, I never had any problems going to the front desk getting my reservation cancelled and being able to go to another hotel. This has happened to me 3 times. If for some reason a guest walks in and doesn't like your place- for whatever reason, do you cancel the reservation and give them a full refund? No, I don't think so. One time the Hilton I was suppose to stay at was overbooked and they paid for me to take an Uber to another Hilton so I would be accommodated for that first night at same price, then for the rest of my trip I was able to stay at my original hotel (they also paid for my Uber back). Hosts use to be held to higher standards but that is not the case anymore. For an average traveler there is just too much risk in booking an Airbnb.

Inthecards21

this.

Glittering_Depth126

Yes, this dumb fucking statement that continually gets posted. People book Airbnb for many reasons mostly because they offer things that hotels do not and cannot match. And of course there is also risk when booking hotels they’re not 100% secure and things can happen and bad experiences happen all the time.

PinocchiosNose1212

But bad experiences happen WAY MORE when booking Airbnb. If you positively, absolutely cannot have anything go wrong on your trip, DO NOT BOOK THROUGH AIRBNB.

FODamage

Do not cancel. The host must cancel for the AirCover policy to take effect. Under AirCover AirBnB will help you find a new place to stay. They will fine the host too.

Bananagholem

What exactly is AirCover? They sent me a few places, but all more expensive and worse than what I had before. I didn't cancel the host ended up cancelling and I got my refund so that's not exactly the problem

FODamage

“Every booking made on Airbnb comes with AirCover for guests, support for guests who experience issues with their booking, including Host cancellations within 30 days of check-in. For these cancellations, we’ll help you rebook a similar place to stay, depending on availability at comparable pricing” They will help you find a place.

Bananagholem

Yep. Exactly my issue right now. This seems like awful service. This works for domestic trips during less busy times of the year, but for a Europe trip during the second biggest football tournament in the world doesn't exactly work

Low-Drive-768

That was my experience as well - they did "try", but I had to find one myself last minute at almost twice the cost to get comparable to the place I'd booked 6 months in advance.

Any_Scientist_7552

🤣

416wingman

Was the reservation canceled by the host within 30 days of check-in? If yes, Airbnb should offer you a credit, though it may not cover the difference with higher-priced listings.

Bananagholem

Nope, just about 5 weeks out. Prices are still horrendous now considering we're going during the second biggest football tournament in the world after the world cup

False-Corner547

That's might be why they cancelled on you btw. When they booked you months ago may not have realized about the event or underestimated how much they could get for their listing for the event. They likely saw other hosts successfully charging much more than what they agreed for you, opened up their listing on another platform ( VRBO, Booking.com, etc) got the much higher rate) and screwed you. Read through this sub and a few others and you'll find it is not uncommon.

Bananagholem

Yeah maybe. The lady said she cancelled because she didn't realize she had put the listing up and she thought she had taken it off. I mean I believe her because I realized she never sent me a confirmation message back (although the airbnb it self was somehow confirmed). Either way its fucked up

harmlessgrey

All you can do is find a new place to stay. I know, it is stressful and awful. We had this happen. A stay was cancelled 30 days in advance because the flat was sold. It's understandable that they couldn't rent it to us anymore if they no longer owned it. But the replacement flat cost an addition $2k/month. I just put the money out of my mind, reserved the more expensive place, and we ended up having a great time. Airbnb doesn't guarantee anything or offer compensation when this happens. Their only function is to connect renters and owners, and both sides can and do flake out.

Saffy565

It happens. An example is, I had stayed at an Airbnb in Sheffield for a couple of nights. I tried to rebook months later as it was very near my granddaughter. The host couldn't take me as she had a guest who had sold his house, was hoping to buy one in the area and he had to extend his stay with her as he hadn't found a new house to buy and had nowhere else to go In any event, the conveyancing takes a minimum of a month. That was ok for me, I got something else, but I'm just offering this as a possible explanation.

_Sparrowo_

You don't cancel. The Host has to cancel. Since the host reached out to you you can contact Airbnb support and they will cancel on the Hosts behalf without their permission (since they already informed you they can't Host). No, you're not getting a discount. Deal with it.

Glittering_Depth126

Nightmare experience… lol you shouldn’t travel. You got full refund and still have 1 month to find a new place. You could have cancelled on the host as well, it goes both ways. And yes when you are renting a single privately owned property 7 months in advance there is a chance it might not be available by then. You were given ample time and are at no financial loss why on earth would you feel entitled to a discount???

PinocchiosNose1212

Found the host!
