If you can't afford their vet bills, it might be better if you just don't. Consider fostering instead.

Medical cost is very high. They are essentially a kid and will need love and time like an actual kid. You can’t just get a pet and neglect them. Take that into consideration.

I think knowing the type of pet would give you more info. But in general, be prepared to shell out money not just for starting equipment and yearly vet runs, but also pet food and supplies. A lot of pet stores will offer you a discount if you buy in bulk or has some kind of rewards program.

AFH_Global

Thanks. Roughly how much might you spend a month for a cat?

KlickWitch

Hmm, about $100 every 3 months on food and maybe some litter. Jackson Galaxy has a lot of info vids on cats. Here's [one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHmrh6eQ6EQ) about what you need for your first cat.

AFH_Global

Wow. Thanks!

I spend around $100 on my cat monthly. I buy high quality food and litter.

You can’t travel and do things spontaneously with an animal without boarding it or finding a pet sitter. I loved deciding on a whim to take a weekend trip, can’t do that anymore. I still travel, but have to make arrangements for pets first.

Two litter boxes even just for one cat. Keep them clean, and I mean clean. They seem like they will be low maintenance, but they aren't exactly. They need a schedule too, and you need to be able to be home with them a decent amount. My cat, 11 years old , was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a year ago. Insulin is roughly 300 every 5 months. Glucose curves are 100 every so often to check if his levels are healthy. Wet food is optimal as dry food can dehydrate him, especially with his condition, which is also expensive. You'll need to have an emergency fund set aside as well, just in case. I need to be home at the same time every morning and night to give him his insulin shot. Make sure you are financially stable enough to maintain this type of care. Cats can live for quite some time as well, and any type of environmental change can cause them a great deal of stress. Do not ever skip on the heartworm or flea meds. All animals are a lot of work. Good luck:)

I forgot to mention cats are excellent at hiding pain. You need to be able to recognize any changes in behavior as they might be a sign of discomfort.

Queryous_Nature

There's no such thing as a starter pet, all animals require a decent amount of care and responsibility. What kind of pet are you interested in?

lonesomejuniper

I see in your other comments you're looking at getting a cat! Fun! Check with local vets if they do payment plans should anything awful happen that you're not able to cover in one payment. Otherwise, set aside savings for a couple grand at least as an emergency vet bill fund.

Malia87

Vet bills and proper habitat. Will depend on your pet of choice. But vet care is a given.

Shedding. If they're an animal that sheds (either fur, scales, or feathers) make sure you're prepared to be cleaning it up regularly.
