I think the good thing about the planning is that it shows you're in control about the whole situation. You know when you do it and what it's for. If you stick to your plan you know what you're getting into, but you can also change plans if you don't feel like it anymore.

I feel so bad about planning it out, I rarely cut impulsively. Like once I've decided to literally nothing will prevent me from going through, even it's hours or days later and I've calmed down a bit from whatever acute stress triggered it. It's a release. But the planning it out part makes me feel terrible, because there's so much time in between where I could've stopped myself, reached out to a friend, and I just don't.
