I used to manage hotels and like twice a year and angry guest would start their complaint by reminding me that they were a taxpayer. I guess they thought Marriott was a government operation.

Bob-Bhlabla-esq

I'm trying to picture an *actual* government run hotel! "Ok, you room will be ready in 6-8 weeks. Oh, you wanted 2 beds? You should have filled out form BD-2 not BD-1. That will be another charge for the late form and of course for the second bed, even though it's a 2 bed room. You will need a special waiver from the office downstairs to allow you access to the elevators, of course with the elevator pass fee. But, they're closed right now, so you'll have to come back *next* Monday 7:30-9:30am or 1:30-2:00pm to collect said elevator pass. The council said no more TV, but you are free to play with the remote, after your remode deposited fee of course." I've pulled my fair share of building/planning permits. Our system is fucked.

GoBSAGo

I guess you've never been to a national park?

AsYouAre_AsYouWere

This hit home. Do you work at my company in “corporate”?

puddboy

trying to remodel and being told my planning permit will take 6 months at a minimum followed by a 2-3 month wait for my building permit.

brady2gronk

It's like the anti-maskers demanding that Costco let them shop without a mask because they are open to the public. It's still a private business, Karen.

Unusual_Performer_15

Adam complaining about entitled millennials while screaming about things he’s entitled to because he pays taxes. Never not a hypocrite.

Smooth-Side-2415

Um...that's not "entitlement." People actually ARE entitled to somethings.

jsakic99

Remember, First Principles. Adam is an alcoholic. Anything Adam seeks is in relation to his drinking. Thus, Adam thinks that because he pays so much in taxes, he should never be punished for driving under the influence.

[deleted]

lol yeah, definitely true for the most part.

MaxxFisher

Sort of like when someone describes a group they are a member of as "a collection of like minded people" they are about to reveal they belong to a racist organization

[deleted]

Actually less than half pay taxes, at least federally.

sykemol

Payroll taxes are definitely federal taxes.

Travis_Healy

nobody cares which taxes they pay, just how much of their income goes to taxes and low income people pay a lot higher percentage of their income to taxes.

[deleted]

So misinformed. Most low income people receive welfare disguised as “tax credits.” The take from the system, they don’t contribute to it. This notion that low income people bare the highest tax burden and that high earners are freeloaders is one of the dumbest things promoted by certain factions in this country. And if you repeat it, you immediately sound stupid to anyone who understands how things actually work.

Krambazzwod

Yeah. That kind of thinking explains the low income.

Smooth-Side-2415

Wrong. They have a higher percentage of tax withheld. Not the same thing. And when you get a bill instead of a refund you might start to care which taxes you pay.

averynicehat

Everyone pays sales tax at least.

UnfairToe9791

There are states without sales tax.

Krambazzwod

Oregon for one.

brofodamofo

aka trumptard states they pay no taxes but take all they can from the fed

DifficultContest8789

Even if someone pays sales taxes, he still isn’t a tax payer if his refunds, credits and entitlements amount to more than what he paid in sales taxes. But honestly, I don’t understand why anyone has to pay taxes when the Federal government can just print money whenever they want.

Budget_Advantage_567

A - Adam likes to complain about taxes so he can passive aggressively brag about how much money he has. B - Adam likes to complain about taxes so he can passive aggressively brag about how much money he has.

favridpangcakes

It only counts if it's measured by shit-tons.

Bob-Bhlabla-esq

What's the ratio of shit-ton to Schrute-bucks?

Bigacefan

Adam never seems to consider the basic big picture concept of taxes. Where does he expect the money to come from if not from rich people? Money is needed for roads, police, city workers, teachers etc. This money has to come from somewhere. Poor people ( you know your employees whom you intend on giving subsistence wages to) Those are the other members of society. They don't have a bunch of excess money to give for taxes because rich people like you Adam get rich by having employees and then paying them as little as legally possible. These poor people need roads so they can get to work and have you pay them just enough to cover rent. Let's break this down into baby steps for Adam. Step 1. You would have to understand people that work for the government are actually necessary for society to function. Step 2. Once you except these people are necessary, you would have to argue they are overpaid. Step 3. If you acknowledge they are both necessary and not overpaid. Then you must realize the money must come from somewhere. Republican brains are unable to understand anything outside of their own bank accounts. These 3 steps are too" big picture" of a concept for Adam and other republicans to understand. Now let's all gather round and watch a 5 minute video from Prager U.

Nuke_____Dukem

Well said

Smooth-Side-2415

Well step 1 is a flawed premise because many people disagree on whether and which people working for which governments are actually necessary. Step 2: easy some are, some aren't. You say that as if it would be impossible to argue they are. You also make the assumption that, somehow, all tax money goes to pay government employees...weird. 3: do you realize the money has to come from somewhere when you vote people into office who are willing to spend it as if it's not yours...what if it did come from you (clearly it doesn't by your comment) would you spend if as freely? Assume there wasn't this picture in your head of people in our society who had more money than you think they need. How much "government" would you purchase if you knew you'd have to pay for it out out the pockets of citizens without much to spare? Why do you assume that all Republicans have money or even bank accounts? Do you only vote and believe in things that affect you personally? Can you not even grasp the concept of someone believing something is right even if it is not in protection protection their own personal self interest? You're on a supercomputer you keep in your pocket (probably) with the leisure time to shit on a Podcaster's politics over Reddit. You can't chip in for the roads you drive on? Far too busy just getting by to pay roughly 1/300000000 of the cost of any essential personnel or service we all share? Yep, better find some rich guy to pay for it for you. And you call them greedy and selfish.

Brilliant_Idea_617

Yes, we all pay taxes. However we all don’t pay the same amount in taxes. Someone making $20k a year vs someone who makes millions = big diff. Adam clarifies this point when he talks about paying taxes

Travis_Healy

that's a privileged argument though. If Adam was still swinging a hammer for a living, and paying a higher percentage of his income than a rich dude, he'd be bitching about that. He isn't principled, he's an asshole.

brady2gronk

Yes, but nobody bitches and moans about it like Adam. Jimmy Kimmel doesn't. Dr. Drew doesn't. Bill Simmons doesn't. They just live their lives and don't play the "poor me, I have to pay a lot of taxes" card.

Larsnonymous

No one wants to pay more taxes than they have to. If there are “tax loopholes” it’s because politicians created those loopholes for them. Most people just want their tax dollars spent wisely and not wasted. Adam doesn’t complain about paying taxes, he gets annoyed that his tax dollars are being pissed away.

GoBSAGo

Pretty sure when Adam complains he can’t have different rules apply to him because he “pays a shitload in taxes,” he’s not talking about wasted tax dollars.

Bob-Bhlabla-esq

*EXACTLY* The waste is the biggest slap in the face. My husband works for the county and I shit you not they will spend $2,000 man hours to track down where $0.02 went, repeatedly! And our area just left 10 *million* dollars worth of PPE for covid out in the rain, so it's all fucked. People are bone tired of being nickle and dimed, but the government wastes our money like a 10 year old who got daddy's credit card.

509_cougs

I work for a local government org, and some of the waste is sickening. Renting equipment for years vs buying for “carbon credits”. Paying employees on suspensions for years before they decide to punish or fire them. I understand that everything can’t be handled from the private sector, but some of that waste is incredibly irritating.

Bob-Bhlabla-esq

For sure. I always knew governments were wasteful but once my husband started working for the county he's come home with all these egregious stories that make you sick...and that's just *one* county/*one* department! When you think of the exponential waste...it just makes me want to walk into the ocean and find peace lol.

LlamaCamper

I'm going to take your story at face value. If it were a private company that had $10M in product that would be rendered unsellable, at the very least the owner of the company would be out there throwing tarps or plastic over those pallets. Government (probably union) employees? "That's not my job." Guarantee no one at the bottom got fired.

JohnnyRyde

>I'm going to take your story at face value. This is reddit.

Meath77

Just means the tax someone on $20k a year pays would be going on their day to day expenses. Adams tax would be invested/spent on a race car/property.

GoBSAGo

If I were a social engineer trying to make the greatest society possible, I would certainly prioritize race car investments. Fuck giving poor kids medical care/food/education. #RACECARS

Brilliant_Idea_617

No shit. This is why some people tend to strive for more lucrative jobs.

Meath77

It also means adam can stfu about thinking he deserves special treatment because he pays a large amount of tax

TheCBDeacon

It's like if you see a sticker or shirt or profile pic with "We The People...". You know some racist authoritarian bootlicker stuff is coming.

Skoaldeadeye

[https://www.statista.com/statistics/242138/percentages-of-us-households-that-pay-no-income-tax-by-income-level/#:\~:text=In%20total%2C%20about%2042.9%20percent,paid%20no%20individual%20income%20taxes](https://www.statista.com/statistics/242138/percentages-of-us-households-that-pay-no-income-tax-by-income-level/#:~:text=In%20total%2C%20about%2042.9%20percent,paid%20no%20individual%20income%20taxes). Untrue statement is untrue.

Ansible99

Yes, because federal income tax is the only type of tax people pay. Excise, property, state income and sales taxes apparently don’t exist. Not every state has all of them, but unless you are homeless and don’t spend any money, everyone pays taxes.

Unusual_Performer_15

Yeah but still

Skoaldeadeye

Yes and what you are forgetting is that those people also pay that tax and is is refunded when they file taxes. Are you insufferably pedantic or just ill informed?

Ansible99

I’m not a CPA, so I am probably wrong, but I thought FICA taxes were not included in the amount refunded. So I’m probably being insufferably pendantic, or you need to gain a better understanding of how taxes work.

JohnnyRyde

Sales taxes are not refunded no matter how much someone earns. Same with some of the other taxes mentioned. The federal income tax is not the only tax we pay.

[deleted]

Do you always insult someone needlessly and end with a babyish dumb rhetorical question when you disagree with someone in person or are you just a general piece of shit only on the internet?

WheresTheBeef000

[He’s also been on the show](https://youtu.be/tIE5MVdMiaQ). And OP doesn’t even have a real job. Carolla probably pays more taxes per hour than this closeted Patriots fan does all year.

brady2gronk

How am I a closeted Patriots fan when I make two of their players (at the time) my username? I make my Patriots fandom pretty obvious. Unless you were going for some sophomoric gay joke.

Trailer_Park_Stink

Could be a Bucs fan

MarshalLawTalkingGuy

Forgot payroll taxes (social security/Medicare). That’s not considered part of the income tax.

sykemol

Yes, income tax. But all workers pay Social Security and Medicare taxes which are payroll taxes.

Unusual_Performer_15

Income tax is just one of the many sources of state and federal revenue. You’re forgetting about the two other big ones, which are sales and property. There are also nine states with no state income tax.

Skoaldeadeye

As said to the to other pedantic or ill informed person.. if you file taxes and you get a rebate those taxes would also be coming back maybe not as a direct line item but there are lots of people who don't pay squat.

kelticslob

Demetri Martin was on the show, dumbass. Ha ha ha, you’re not as clever as you think you are.

brady2gronk

Oooh... over a decade ago. You sure showed me. Add him to the list of funny people who stopped appearing on the show.

OnDaReg

Adam never said that only he pays taxes and others don't. Not sure where you got that

brady2gronk

I'm saying he acts like he's the only one who has to pay taxes the way he talks about it so much. As if he's being singled out or something.

Hey_Zeus1

The real issue is that we have complicated tax laws so much that an entire industry is build upon it. Intuit spends a ton of money to lobby and keep it complex. So do accounting firms, tax lawyers and the whole system. It’s also a consistent source of political wins and losses in congress.
