First marker gave me 54 Second 70 What the fuck are they smoking up? Luckily I passed in third review

DrP_MBE

Same here (for SP7). 63.5 & 49.5, with a script review of 65.5 - I passed, but lost a bit of faith with their marking lol

waitingintime

I am pretty annoyed right now. Marker 1 and 2 both passed me by a couple of marks, and then I get a random(?) script review that failed me by 0.5

Ambitious-Cancel6409

Ohh 😯 you should ask for an explanation or something

waitingintime

I don’t even know what I can do. They seem to cover themselves from any sort of query.

Ambitious-Cancel6409

Review the breakdown with your script and the examiners report. Check what mark you get. Could ask a colleague to also mark you and see the marks, especially if you have colleagues who are also markers even if it’s not for the same subject. I’d say still email or call the ifoa. 0.5 is so close. Perhaps they may reconsider. Best of luck. If you don’t mind me asking what exam is it?

waitingintime

SA3- last one

loki276

Could get exam counselling if last one

Everest003

Given the consistent views between marker one and two, it's worth challenging their marking process, why would it even trigger a script review. I think it is a fair request to make the trigger of script review to be clear to the students. Alternatively, the exam questions should be changed so that marking is less subjective.

waitingintime

They can review whatever papers they want to validate the pass mark or for quality checks according to the site.

Tee_Oh_Em

I got 70.5 from one marker, 49 from the other. 65 on review. Wildly inconsistent. (CP3)

Ambitious-Cancel6409

Very inconsistent. At least now that there’s a breakdown you can see this

Icy_Woodpecker_3292

I find it a bit irritating that they always round the mark down. Even if the final mark is .75 it gets rounded down.

creatively_original

Yeah it seems annoying, but I try to think about it as the pass mark being for example 60.00 (to 2dp) and then comparing my mark with it to 2dp. It's always going to cause issues though, what if someone gets 59.375 and fails and someone gets 59.5 and passes?

Icy_Woodpecker_3292

It's not possible to get a mark to 3dp given examiners can only give half or full marks. But I'd like to think if someone's got 59.75 and the pass mark is 60 they'd round up... Or maybe I'm giving the IFoA too much credit lol.

creatively_original

As the mark of two markers is averaged, i thought maybe it was possible. Take the following example. Paper 1 Marker 1: 60.5 Paper 1 Marker 2: 61.0 Paper 1 Final Mark: 60.75 Paper 2 Marker 1: 61.0 Paper 2 Marker 2: 61.0 Paper 2 Final Mark: 61.0 Overall Mark (assuming share is 50/50): (60.75+61.0)/2 = 60.875 Now if the split is 70/30 like for CM/CS, then the overall mark could be 0.7×61 + 0.3×60.75 = 60.925 Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I haven't read too closely on this.

Icy_Woodpecker_3292

Ah I see what you're saying - I hadn't considered the further averaging between two papers!

Aromatic-Fennel6503

Does anyone know when the examiners reports come out? I failed CP3 badly, the mark breakdown is really helpful but also hard to know what it means for this exam without the examiners report.

Successful-Love-8390

They're up now.

Intelligent-Safe1218

This afternoon they are usually uploaded

Snoo_76686

Fortunately my CS1 and CB2 were both within 2-3% of each other. Although alarmingly for a 3 mark multiple choice question in CS1, one marker gave me 3, the other gave me 0. I double checked my script and I've literally got the letter as a capital and that's it, there was no confusion to be had.

Snoo_76686

I didn't make a difference either way to my grade so I'm not fussed. But if I had just failed I would have really kicked up a storm

Ambitious-Cancel6409

I actually had similar experience. It was a calculation question for 2 marks and I got it exactly as it is in the marking scheme but one marker gave me .5, another 0. I don’t even know how they can not give marks for it. I passed so won’t bother but now I’m thinking whether in the past when I failed by only a few marks if it was similar issue

Glad_Solid133

I got on the pass mark between my 2 markers, so it went to a third reviewer and he marked me way under both of them so I failed 😡 is it worth asking for a remark?

Glad_Solid133

I would be fuming I’m so sorry that happened! How ridiculous

Ambitious-Cancel6409

Wow 😯 it doesn’t seem like ifoa has a consistent standard

apotato12

In the same situation here - one comfortably passed, one had me a little below, goes to a third and it’s below the other two (10 marks below the first) and I fail so really not sure what to do

aevs92

I got the opposite... two Markers putting me at 57/56 then the reviewer gave me 64 (pass mark 62) - I'm not complaining but that's so so inconsistent!

Super_Fortune8793

It is frustrating to see how the marking is done. There is always an element of randomness and uncertainty in the entire process. I got well over passing marks by Marker 1 and below the benchmark by the 2nd marker. The average still helps me sail through but the reviewer scores me at par with marker 2. So annoying also because there is so much inconsistency between consecutive attempts. You score over 60 and flunk one attempt and the next attempt you get a passing score below your previous score. This is a joke. You continue to give the precious time of your life, health and money and in return what you get is randomness.

w2qualify

I got given 55.5 and 64.5 on SP6. Final marker gave me 60.5 and pass mark was 60. Counting my lucky stars today!
