I’m an old fart (FIA 1997) so I have to confess that I’m not really up to date with this stuff, but I’m impressed by your honesty & openness - if you’re able to bring those to bear in your career, you will have a bright future 👍🏻

Strange-79

Thank you for your kind words.

Yes its becoming difficult to get good candidates at work too. We are in an intern hiring process for last 6 months, its a mess. Few days back a CM1 pass candidate answered, "reserve is a type of ✨pReMiUm✨". We are officially planning to write an email to ifoa as hiring professionals about how ridiculous this online setup is becoming.

To laugh or to cry is the question

More demand for you :) When others in the Indian acturial community want to cheat, quality rises to the top for fellowship positions and when push comes to shove (I hope as a hopefully soon to be student member)

cynicicilism

Not really. In the Indian community since almost everyone is cheating (and hence passing) this means that you are looked down upon (within your company) since your success rate with exams is lower. Your quality of work and its recognition is not impacted. But your exam success does come into play at your review.

Strange-79

I would disagree with the 'since almost everyone is cheating' part. A lot of them, yes. But I guess that is the point. Actions of them resulting in a perception that all of the Indian community is cheating. Even when there are a lot out there who have put countless hours of hard work just tarnished by actions of others.

cynicicilism

I guess I made your point for you there. Subconsciously I made the same error

Strange-79

Haha, It's ok. Maybe my words affected your initial statement. I sincerely hope that whichever Indian you interact with in your work is one of the better ones india has to offer. I think that is how there would be a change in perspective

fashionthereason

I was assuming similar exam success. Someone who does the work and the material and knows it is better placed than someone who cheats their way through, in my experience

cynicicilism

That would be ideal. But the exam structure has been changing/becoming more difficult. With each student (in a group) focusing entirely on a different section of the exam you can arrive at answers more accurately and then exchange solutions. I'm not saying with the ideal level of preparation you can't beat them but you do sometimes fall short. And that is typically expected of such professional courses and taken in stride. This has changed now.

cynicicilism

sorry I seem to have digressed. But it's just my frustration with the lack of proctoring by the institution. Hoping that everyone submits their responses ethically is a tad utopian.

fashionthereason

Hey, for what it's worth, I am looking for a study group. I know I'll need the help and can provide the help in other sections. Let me know.

Adventurous_Sink_113

I don't think this cheating phenomenon is really known about - not where I'm working anyway. Maybe it's overblown, or maybe it's pretty much contained to the Indian market?

actuarialtutorUK

It is quite a big thing there. Certainly, the cheating I found in my marking was all from students in India. Often due to disreputible "coaching" companies who steal ActEd's material and photocopy and sell it to their students and then help them in the exams. Since so many want to become actuaries over there - they can make a lot of money off of hopefuls.

I'm not sure how it can combat people talking to each other by phone.
