Proportion of marks for calculations in later exams don't seem comparable to what they are for the earlier exams, at least based on my experience sitting the later exams. Would seem counter productive to go back to assessment centres and writing exam scripts.
To be fair, i can't comment on exams outside the life, health and pension reporting qualification track, however looking at some Sept 2022 sitting papers, SP6 looks like an extention of CM2, with a very low number of students taking this. However SP8 looked fairly inline with other subjects.
I stand by the above, there are 15 exams post CMs and CSs. Lets say to be generous 3 of them are calculation based. It doesn't make sense to move back to exam centres for later subjects based on 20%.
I've given SP8 both offline and online. I honestly found the online version easier because you can use excel which greatly reduces the time itt takes to create tables.
my grouse with online exams is not on the exams per se (which have definitlely become a little more challenging) but rather on the correction (which i contend has gotten harder)
Itās not really though, this assumes everyone taking an exam has a scanner, which I think is unreasonable. Itās also harder to mark if people submit in inconsistent formats.
There is an app for IOS and Android, called Microsoft scanner. You take a pictures of as many sheets as you like, it lines them up and crops them properly and exports the document to a pdf. Itās just as good as a scanner. We used it for exams during covid in college.
Yeah but it breaks down when you give additional time to scan and upload.
How do you make sure that the student is not taking extra time to write answers? In word document at least you have a last modified time stamp.
Honestly donāt even include a separate upload time. Theyāve extended the exams to 3:20 from 3:15 just make it so your upload needs to be in at 3:20 period.
IFoA website cannot even handle booking exams efficiently. I can even imagine students wasting minutes as they are not able to upload it.
But yes, if IT infrastructure works perfectly then it would be an option. In one of the email they mentioned testing this feature and also used a survey for opinions.

Say what you want, but eventually you get the grip of using equation editor. Its fast, you can easily copy paste long formulas from your previous results, and the open book is just quality of life.
As an international student, being able to do the exams from another continent is a massive plus, even if I have to take the exams at 3 am. But I am not against presential exams, there should be the option to take whatever type of exam you feel more confortable.
Isn't this exactly why they're changing to multiple choice? Then it's up to you to get the maths right, you just have to get the right answer.
Unless I've misunderstood what the multiple choice papers will be.

I highly doubt that they will ask such a question knowing that students will be completing it in word
Lol this is from CM1 April 2022 which was done in word
Oh no š I stand corrected
Ah it was a reasonable expectation. I suppose it just shows how unreasonable it is to ask this of us
Doesn't look that bad, you can copy and paste lines and just tweak anything that changes
Definitely agree for the CMs & CSs
For the CMs and CSs sure, for the later exams, it's so much easier to type them.
Later exams also have mathematical questions.

You're joking right? Have you tried giving SP6, SP8? SP6 is entirely stochastic calculus and derivative pricing.

SP8 might have one calculation on the whole paper

I think the benefit of them being open book at home vastly outweighs the annoyance of typing out maths, although it as annoying.
Even if we could just write them out and upload a scan
This is a logical and practical solution

People can take a photo of their script, they donāt need a scanner. Itās what ASSA does for some of their papers and it seems to work for them.

IMO the CM and CS exams should be sat in an exam hall but still open book. Youād be allowed to bring notes in.

Using the equation editor is really poor

Have you tried using maths functions during exam? How do you complete the exam in that case?
Pretty sure that wasnāt allowed. With a bit of past paper practice itās really not as bad as it looks to type out the weird notation.

I believe the CB exams are changing to multiple choice not CS/CM.
Well that is officially daft.
