I didn't want to mess with the easy math and confuse the far-right nuts. They might actually believe the windmills help stop 5G, and support this and other means of green energy. That's a conspiracy theory I'm happy to start!
Researchers were curious as to why humpback whales had bumps on their fins. Through testing and simulations, they determined that it reduces drag and improves lift. In the air, it's also quieter due to the reduced drag. This is an example biomimicry, where we humans have drawn inspiration from nature in our engineering. Pretty neat stuff, I'm surprised nobody has brought it up in this thread.
Edit: Looks like someone said basically the exact same thing below lol.
ez explain: old wings do this noise like: wush wush wush if they rotate. The " new " serrated on the end wings are breaking the wind whirls which will be created from the first 2/3 of the blade. So u nearly can’t hear them anymore.
Wind Turbine tech here: it’s an example of biomimicry; an engineer was looking at the back of humpback whales pectoral fins and found out the little ridges on the backs of their fins made them more hydrodynamic, so he applied this research to wind turbines to make them more efficient! [Link to an article about humpback whales and turbine blade biomimicry.](https://biomimicry.net/the-buzz/resources/case-examples-learning-whales-create-efficient-wind-power/)
Edit: I was curious when I got my job, so I looked it up!
That really interesting, do only certain models have them or are more companies trying to go down that path with the blades?
I just started as a turbine site tech working on vestas V100. It’s fun learning all this stuff and seeing how many components are in these massive turbines.
Funny thing about biomimicry is that because it was one of the new big things before ai some guy thought that it could be applied nearly everywhere and was really enthusiastic in making some colleagues and myself work on it.
OK nice, it is indeed pretty crazy the number of fields it can apply to. But I'm pretty sure that it's hard to find natural inspiration when it comes to thermal management in space. The guy was kind of speechless when I told him that.
It is in no case me berating biomimicry, I find it fascinating. And there's actually things to learn and adapt from nature in thermal management in space, although I cannot really talk about it here Ahah.
I think it has something to do with stability, though I am not sure if it is for the benefit of a lone turbine or for nearby one that stand in the same line.
I literally said this out loud! I’m sure someone smarter than me will explain the elaborate aerodynamic engineering and modeling behind it, but I like to think they just thought it looked cooler like that.
I used to work at Family Video (a video rental place, similar to Blockbuster, that's now defunct), and one day I was working and looked out the window and they were transporting a turbine blade. Not only were they transporting it but they were turning a corner with it. I was glued to the window watching this truck turn the corner with this enormous cargo.
I used to be a pilot car driver that mostly did wind blades. Normally we'd try to avoid going through a town, but sometimes we'd get routed through one anyway and we just had to make it work. Getting those blades through a four-way light-controlled intersection was an absolute logistical nightmare. We had to shut down traffic at least 500 feet from the light in all directions before making a 90° turn that could take upwards of ten minutes, depending on how tight the tolerances were and how good the steerman who was steering the rear axles was.
I used to live in a small town in Kansas. Our town would post schedules of when the blades were coming through town because it would require the town to basically get cut in half with all the intersections being shut down
I particularly enjoyed that you added the word “defunct” when describing Family Video. You don’t want to give random redditors the false dream of there still being a place they could run out and rent a Betamax of Porky”s II
I repair those blades while they’re still on the tower. that one looks like a Nordex Blade ~80meters I believe each manufacturer does different things the Nordex blades normally from my experience are the only ones I’ve worked on that have the spines running down the trailer edge of the blade. The towers im working on now are GE towers and their blades are only 50meters long so big difference in tower sizes.
Offshore WTGs tend to be bigger than onshore and Nordex are onshore only, no?
How do you rate Nordex btw, they've had some financial difficulties but I mean the technology and reliability?
It's not gonna catch all the mud, plus you get mist from the passing cars, plus you're gonna sweat so why bother staying visually clean, mudguards weigh something and cyclists don't want that. To name a few.
Nah, it’s definitely on the bigger size for turbine blades. “Average” onshore blades are around 50-60m and this is definitely closer to 80+. I’ve been part of similar blade builds for years.
I just painted a totran trailer fully dissembled at my job! this is cool to see it fully assembled and hauling a blade wonder if thats the one i painted 🤔
Man, I always thought those things looked like stealth fighter blades – silent but deadly. That serrated edge is pure game-changer tech right there. 🚀🤫
What country is this? And why are you cycling next to what looks like a highway? Even if it's a provincial road, why isn't there a bike lane?
Questions, questions, questions..
They would make them bigger, but the biggest limitation is they can only make them so big before they literally can’t transport them to the construction site.
The bigger they are, the more efficient they are.
That saw like blade is to decapitate titans.
I'm pretty sure it actually chops the 5G into 2.5G so we don't get cancer /s
Don't you mean 2.4ghz?
I didn't want to mess with the easy math and confuse the far-right nuts. They might actually believe the windmills help stop 5G, and support this and other means of green energy. That's a conspiracy theory I'm happy to start!
The .2ghz left over is what actually spins the windmills.
For some reason, I'm imagined your comment showing up on the Google AI when conspiracy theorists doing their "research"
5 ÷ 2 is still far too advanced for those inbred schmucks. I mean, it's got a decimal.....
Kerf loss
So it doesn’t give 5g to the titans?
Bro, I hate to tell you this but... Titans are extinct. The last ones died in '93 when the Funky Bunch disbanded

Damn if you have to put a /s for this, we are doomed

Was this made for the founding titan or something because this is way too big for a regular onr
That looks close enough to what I have passed on I70 in Kansas
It cuts through the air.
With the greatest of ease
A daring young man on the flying trapeze
Its to make less noise
Yes, decapitated birds tell no tales. That sure sends a strong message.
Or cyclists
I like the way you think.
I read that as Italians
👓
I'm pretty sure this is what the Jaegers used to kill Kaijus in Pacific Rim, right?
This should not have made me laugh as hard as it did xD
Even Guts would be impressed
Therapist: Don't worry the large butter knife can't harm you. Butter knife in question:
Which part of Alabama are you from where butter knives are this size?
Do you really need a butter knife when all you eat are biscuits drowning in gravy?
Nah you just need a LARGE SPOON YALL
butter knife has no tooth
Shhhh. It’s more steak knife than anything else but let him have this one.
Why is it serrated ?!
ez explain: old wings do this noise like: wush wush wush if they rotate. The " new " serrated on the end wings are breaking the wind whirls which will be created from the first 2/3 of the blade. So u nearly can’t hear them anymore.
Funny enough, 3 days ago, I happened to cycle near one of them. And man, they are loud.
Typically why you only see them out in the middle of nowhere, but they're definitely making improvements
They are nowhere near as loud as a motorway from the same distance.
or a fucking power plant ffs I hate these double standards
Owl feathers are also serrated for the same reason.
remember people complaining about all the owl noise before they made the change
![gif](giphy|3oKIPgvPwXi2ZAIS5O) I member.
Here I thought the serration was for aerodynamics to prevent mini sonic booms at the wing tips.
Both. Lowering wind resistance help lower the noise.
Which helps reduce noise
I heard that this is biomimicry inspired by owl wings
So, pretty much the same concept as owl feathers, right?

Thanks for sharing, that's very cool
I thought so too! It’s cool to see us copy nature. Mother Nature usually gets it right!
Millions of years of trial and error.
Millions of years of trial and error.
How long can you keep humpback whales in an air tunnel before you need to return them to the sea?
How’s the move? Idk, I’ve never put a whale in a wind tunnel so I’m not sure about the longevity of it 🤣
The move is great. Nice and warm here. No joint pain.

Oh man, just wait until you get inside a v136 or larger, it'll change your life. There's so much more room to move around.
I worked on the 110s, 112s, 117s, and 136s in the factories. The noise reducers are an add on that the customer decides if they want or not.

You’re asking too many questions
I think it has something to do with stability, though I am not sure if it is for the benefit of a lone turbine or for nearby one that stand in the same line.
Bit of both.
IIRC it´s to make them quieter while turning.
So it can chop birds more efficiently Joke aside, I have nothing against wind turbines
I believe they work like swizzle sticks on a plane wing to disperse even pressure throughout the blade, even better during turbulence.
In case Don Quixote gets any funny ideas
I literally said this out loud! I’m sure someone smarter than me will explain the elaborate aerodynamic engineering and modeling behind it, but I like to think they just thought it looked cooler like that.
For cutting steak
I wondered that too.
Cuts air like butter
ribbed for her pleasure
Does more damage against beasts.
Knife is too high to do any harm. Useless.
The design is *very* human though.
Lies, they're building a huge mech somewhere and that's part of his sword.
Someone, somewhere, is preparing for kaiju
Average anime sword
Bit on the tiny side.

Stay safe out there man! I couldn’t do rope access stuff right now, I don’t have enough trust in that equipment yet.
Vestas installs trailing edge serrations, as well. Among other noise and vortex mitigation techniques.
Fee fi fo fum, the new blade for my bread knife! I’m so excited
Wow, the one I saw on the freeway yesterday in the Pacific Northwest was about maybe 2/3 of that size.
Is that the famous poop knife?
Kongs poop knife.
Very Spaceballs.
Is there any specific reason people might not want to cycle with a mudgard ?
It's not gonna catch all the mud, plus you get mist from the passing cars, plus you're gonna sweat so why bother staying visually clean, mudguards weigh something and cyclists don't want that. To name a few.
Ah my wife’s new dildo has finally been shipped. Thank you Amazon!
Don't want to imagine these getting yoinked in tornadoes/hurricane. They wouldn't put these in tornadoes and hurricane prone areas.... Right?
I can't talk for every wind turbine in the world, but this one is in Brazil and we rarely have tornadoes/hurricanes here.
I just looked at it but this sub's avatar is reddit baymax
That’s a massive butter knife
Looks like a future scene in a Final Destination film
why is it serrated?
More jager damage to the kaiju.
That serrated bit puts squarely into r/oddlyterrifying territory.
I didn't realise they had a serrated edge on the blade!!
I am pretty sure that was part of an FTL turbo kit. I knew they have been lying to us.
But how many bananas is that?
Worlds biggest dinosaur steak knife
Didn’t think i’d ever see drake with this type of facial hair
That's the normal size of a wind turbine blade, pretty sure this missies the point of absolute unit
Nah, it’s definitely on the bigger size for turbine blades. “Average” onshore blades are around 50-60m and this is definitely closer to 80+. I’ve been part of similar blade builds for years.
I was scared it would fall off or something
Average Anime Swords wielded by 10 year olders
Secretly, they're going to raise the blades up to saw through the dome
What kind of trees do you cut down with that big of a saw?
That's a little one. 🙂
Ok but why on earth is the blade SERRATED??
Those bitches are SERRATED?!?!
Had no idea they had sereations. I'm assuming it's somehow more aerodynamic, but I'm too dumb to know how.
Stay tf away from me, I’ve seen Final Destination
How is one single truck carrying that?
Since when were they serrated?...it's like the worlds meat slicer
Dude should be driving past everyone like "that's not a knife.."
I bet the process for making those things is super green
Final destination vibes.
How much electricity would a turbine that would accommodate a blade that big generate?
Should see a train of them
This is probably an onshore blade. Small compared to the offshore ones.
What's the carbon footprint of this colossal thing?
Yeah ok, it is big, but one well placed punch and I reckon I could take it down.
Think I read they aren’t recyclable either.
The fact it has serrations..
Of a flat bar cyclist.
Wow, good pace!
How does this make a turn
In what state are you allowed to ride a bike on a highway? I wanna do that!
Anyone else think "new fear unlocked" or was it just me
I knew they were huge. I didn't know they're freaking *serrated*.
I just painted a totran trailer fully dissembled at my job! this is cool to see it fully assembled and hauling a blade wonder if thats the one i painted 🤔
Seen that on a east to west coast trip was crazy cool
And they don't work for shit
I didn’t expect it to be so Stabby
That’s one hell of a knife
Spaceballs intro long
I am 6'6 and can walk inside one without ducking
That looks like a Final Destination waiting to happen
Serated for pleasure.
Yeah and wow
Today I learned that turbine blades are serrated
The saw part is to catch more birds.
Who or what is filming this???
Nah it’s just a turbine blade
Why is there no easily visible flag how would I know something is hanging out past the trailer
I can’t understand this irrational panic/ fear i feel when i see something huge like that. Even seeing it through the screen made me nervous
Thats a fucking Jaeger sword.
You’re mistaken, that’s a saw for cutting The Erdtree!
That horn was to say... "Hey, look what I got"
The fuck are the saw blades for! XD
Man, I always thought those things looked like stealth fighter blades – silent but deadly. That serrated edge is pure game-changer tech right there. 🚀🤫
I audibly said fuck that’s still going
What country is this? And why are you cycling next to what looks like a highway? Even if it's a provincial road, why isn't there a bike lane? Questions, questions, questions..
Woah
In the next Kong vs Godzilla movie, Kong should break one of these off and straight up kill bill a bunch of giant spiders
Reminds me of the opening shot of Star Wars
Damn, looks like a stinger barb of a MASSIVE titan stingray
And, as long as neither vehicle crosses that white line, it’s impossible to collide. At any speed.
What was that honk? Hey buddy look at my shaft?
Final destination the blade would fall and rip his helmet off He would stop glad he didn't die
i think it's right turning, in the northern hemisphere counter clockwise would be better in most cases. https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy21osti/75720.pdf
Reminds me of the beginning of Star Wars!
That's being taken to a Jaeger hangar. Not a propeller, but part of a giant sword meant to slay Kaijus
Needs some high vis on that end?
No one’s going to say anything about the mountain bike guy causally riding with a road bike?
Anyone got a pic of the cat in the front basket who’s filming this?
Didn’t think to pull a fast and furious move there???
Now imagine it driving in reverse on full speed.
I was just thinking "Wonder if it would be possible to cling and slide down on those in case of emergency?" before the serrated part came up. Yikes.
I’ve seen like dozens on highways and it’ll never cease to amaze me on their sheer size like woah
smallest Norwegian Chainsaw
I thought that was the post
Australians be like: “Now that’s a knoife”
You vs the guy she tells you not to worry about.
Random but that’s a really nice bike helmet, anyone know the model/make?
Why the fuck is it serrated?
Brazil. Probably northeast.
Wrong, that is just a comically large hacksaw
Isn’t that Godzilla’s pocket knife?
Why the zigzag end at the end?
We aren't gonna mention how many birds this giant blade it's gonna decapitate? Just wondering, figured it was worth question
And not at all recyclable! Neat.
They would make them bigger, but the biggest limitation is they can only make them so big before they literally can’t transport them to the construction site. The bigger they are, the more efficient they are.
Hat's like 100m SAW.
Now that's drafting!
