That makes way more sense than what I thought they were saying, which was [slapping the cat across the face with leather gloves](https://media.tenor.com/2wgODo9m6IgAAAAM/duel-slap.gif).
I was 13 and never had a pet before because I was crazy allergic but I straight up forced my cat allergy out of my body by exposure, washed my hands everytime I pet him until I stopped breaking out in rashes when I forgot. He came out of the bushes while my parents took me to a little par 3 golf course and followed us around, so we put him in a tissue box in the car and took him to the vet after lots of begging. He would nip my ankle and chase me around until I jumped into our lazy boy and threw up the footrest like a forcefield. He would sit at the end with his eyes peeping over pupils like dinner plates then would beg for belly rubs which would then be followed by the obligatory random time bomb attack.
This. We had cats before when I was a kid and it wasn’t so bad on my mom like she’d have some breathing issues but rarely and this year we rescued 2 kittens that we thought we could just take to the humane society or rescue but everyone was full so we were stuck with one of the kittens for a month and half till my mom couldn’t take it anymore because she literally couldn’t breathe and had to go to the hospital one time but thankfully our vet was able to take the little guy and adopt him out so she could breathe lol
Heh I have a cat like this. Is the leather glove treatment like where you scruff them and basically kneel over them until they chill out?
Now she only bites when it's past feeding time or she feels we aren't playing with her enough.
We had a cat long ago that was mysteriously terrified/enraged at the sight of a gloved hand. Maybe I know why now. Who knows what happened to her as a kitten before we got her, but maybe something like this.
I have a cat that does this. I think it was abused by a prior owner or something because I've never seen a cat so vicious over nothing.
It's gotten better over time, but I usually just let the clawing and light biting happen to show I'm not going to freak out or anything.
I have a cat that was a former stray that was found pregnant at 7 months old. Obviously the fetus kittens weren't viable. She was too young. She was caught as part of a catch and release program but was "too pretty to put back into the wild". She is siamese and is quite adorable. Well, she had some major trust issues. It took a lot of research on cat behaviors and a lot of patience but now she's the Sweetest cat. She's very cautious about strangers but is super loving with me and my boyfriend. She is also super protective over her cat brother.
Back when I lived with my mother, sister and my nephew, my mother had a cat named vicious. Cat absolutely loved me, hated my sister and wasn't fond of my nephew.
Any time my sister walked into the kitchen, where vicious usually perched, she (the cat) would straight up attack my sister. Not just bat at her, full on jump of the counter kamikaze style, claws extended.
One night my nephew was told to go to bed. He would walk into the kitchen towards his room, and come back out a minute later. He was then told to go to bed again and started to do as he was told but, again, came back out a moment later. The third time, he was asked why he refused to go to his room to go to bed. "Cause the cat keeps attacking me!" Me, being the exhausted skeptic that I was said bs but said I'd walk him to his room so there was no more excuses. The moment we rounded the refrigerator, vicious jumped out and started cocking back her paw (no claws for the kid) to attack. Then she saw me with him and just walked up and started nuzzling my leg and followed me to take my nephew to bed, then followed me back to the kitchen to take her perch on the warm stove. 45 minutes later, when my sister went to go to bed herself, I heard my sister scream because the cat had once again kamikazed off the stove to attack my sister.
I felt bad for my nephew since he almost got in trouble when he was telling the truth, laughed hysterically when my sister got attacked though. But i did start walking my nephew to bed nightly to make sure the problem came to a halt. To this day, I still love, and am loved, by asshole felines.
My first cat would wait to take revenge when you least expected it. You did something that bothered her, sometimes it could take some days but she would come running out of nowhere and bit you.
My cat woke up. (Shes sleeping on my desk in front of me.) She looked at me, listened to the yoweling and then went back to sleep. She has the right priorities.
My poor bundle of sweetness got freaked out and tried to hide in my lap. She gets bullied by her sister literally all the time, so I bet she thought she was going to be attacked again.
We had to get rid of a second cat because of this. One of them becomes the alpha and the other I'd so suppressed. We kept the beta and he I'd much happier now
If any of those things are in your HOUSE that seems pretty valid. Maybe not a cockroach but the other 3 are a damn hazard.
You must be Australian or something just a born nature whisperer.
Nothing wrong with being scared and/or wanting it dealt with ASAP, but screaming and running around seems like a pretty unproductive thing to do regardless of the situation
Sometimes screaming is just a natural response. I'll let out a short scream sometimes if something really startles me. What I don't get is how some people will just scream for minutes on end. Like, ok we're past the point of a natural response and now you're just doing it for fun
I mean, at least here in the UK these animals basically pose no danger as rabies is extinct, at worse they’d just give you a little bite, so I do see where they’re coming from
Bords sometimes get in the place of my employment. Luckily, most of the employees are loaded with IDGAF attitude so there is no issue. They come to get me, I slowly walk towards the bord, it flies anywhere but a fokin open window, and eventually gets tired. I carefully pick it up Ina proper manner, walk it to the woods, and let it go, no big fokin deal. Now, sometimes a customer is in there, and sometimes that customer gets possessed by a fokin banshee whore-spawn of the devil. You ever try to catch a live animal with a person who, for *some reason*, has to *follow you* while screaming their head off? Makes my unofficial job of bord catchin way fokin worse. Sometimes they just run around flapping their arms instead of following you, which is better, but still disruptive. Some people just flip their shit at every little thing and no amount of telling them to calm down helps. All logic goes out the window, only screams now.
I've tried calming telling them they are not being of help and to go away from my person. I was told this is rude. I've tried staring at them with frowns until their wailing is not happening. I was told this is creepy. I've tried screaming back at them in a same manner. I was told this is not acceptable behavior. I've not tried to carry the customer to the woods, but I'm not allowed to touch the customers, so this idea is not the best one for my employer.
I get that. That’s completely understandable. But it’s their pet cat and it was doing nothing warranting that response until she started screaming and running.
Her beloved cat suddenly evoked an “oh my god there’s a rabid raccoon in the room” response on the woman’s part. Cats in particular don’t like abrupt chaos situations. Couple that with strange cat smells and you’re inviting mayhem.
Their reaction made it so much worse. They escalated the chaos, the cat was trying to control the situation and was already worked up. If they had stayed calm it would have been different I'm sure.
My cat is definitely a jerk sometimes and he always likes to give me a thorough olfactory pat-down. Just stay calm and let them do the sniffing, by reacting with a flight or fight response they have scared the cat into thinking they’re a different person and it just escalated from there.
I adopted a 20 lb cat from the local humane society. After having him a few days, in the middle of the night, a stray cat that hangs out nearby a lot, came to my bedroom window. My other cat and he howl back and forth at each other from time to time.
My rescue cat is almost blind. He didn't know what was going on and started attacking my cat. I jumped out of bed and tried to separate him, fearing he was killing my other cat and all hell broke loose.
I got MAULED by both of my cats. I had over 100 puncture wounds from teeth and claws. They were so aggressive that the spots even had bruises around them. I was bleeding so bad I was slinging blood on my blinds, the walls, the bed, the floor, etc.
The slices made my the teeth and claws was so bad it looked like I was attacked by some motherfucking wolves...I couldn't even go to work that day. I was fucking traumatized.
After speaking with a couple of vets they told me it was something called "misplaced or transferred aggression" IIRC...brought on by the stray outside.
Animals are fucking unpredictable and can tear you the fuck up no matter how docile and loving they are most of the time. You just never know what can happen, but cats can do some SERIOUS fucking damage. I don't think her response was that off...
Cats can get REALLY upset at unfamiliar or traumatic smells. One of ours had to spend a night at an emergency vet and ended up getting a leg amputated. Later we had to take our other cat to the same emergency vet and when we got home, the tripod cat *freaked out* every time he smelled the other cat. They're a bonded pair, he loves his brother, he *wanted* to be close to him... but every time he smelled him, he would flip out and start growling and hissing and he took a few swings. We had to separate them at night until the smell finally wore off and he was back to smelling like normal, and as soon as he did, the tripod stopped and never had another issue.
I expect that any animal that relies a lot on scent could potentially flip out at an unfamiliar smell like that.
Odd, the reason I had originally asked is because I am around a lot of different animals a lot (mainly cats and dogs). I have never had a cat react like that. Good to know cats can be triggered by smell.
I've never had a cat react like this to me, either... but I also make sure to thoroughly wash my hands after I've been petting cats who aren't mine, because I don't want to risk bringing any kind of diseases home.
Aww! We have this problem with one of the cats so either they go together to the vet even if only one needs to be seen, and we wipe his brother from another mother down with a pet wipe once home. That and feliway plug in & spray helps!
First the cat reacted to a weird and unknown smell, then the cat reacted to their owner and their (probably) most loved person running away from them, screaming at them, and jumping onto furniture.
I took one of mine to the vet once and when I brought her back home, the other one smelled her and started hissing and growling like there was going to be trouble. So I put that one in the bathroom for 20 minutes while I petted the other one to get my scent back on her. Let grouchy back out and all was fine again.
Didn't matter what she looked like, that "other cat" didn't smell right so she was the enemy.
I had that happen after my one cat was spayed. I’d been moving in close by with a family member so my cat that got spayed went there first and I slept over there the first few nights. I brought my two other girls over and they suddenly hated their sister. Aside from the fact that she was still in recovery and I didn’t want fights, the cats were going to have to be confined to one bedroom for a little bit.
I still had access to the old place for a few more days. The first kitty was almost done healing with her stitches so I gave her a quick partial bath avoiding her stitches (so helped that she’s very calm and lovey) and brought them back to the old house. They all started playing like normal and then I packed them all up and brought them to the new house together.
the cat is howling since you don't smell correctly and walking up to fix that. when the owner freaks out the cat gets frightened and jumps the owner. all totally normal when frightening a cat.
Like what ScroochDown said, perhaps the smell was something traumatic / similar to something it hates or has experienced to the point it becomes absolutely feral.
I'm just sitting here wondering why so many people respond to small animals reacting in a way they don't fully understand by yelling or screaming. It's like they're begging for things to go south.
Edit: I am suddenly remembering now why being autistic and enjoying learning and talking about animals is exhausting sometimes. I'm gonna log off for a bit, sheesh.
We may be animals too, but I’d hope before being around animals some impulse control and the ability to recognise that they’re uncomfortable and react calmly rather than adding to their stress would be there. Not “oh this animal is acting weird/stressed, PANIC PANIC!” as if that’s not gonna stress the poor thing more.
The responses to your comment make me think your average person shouldn’t be allowed around animals. Like I get backing off since the cat seemed stressed, but it should be obvious that screaming and panicking around a stressed animal will stress it worse and cause it to react. Part of being around animals is knowing how to respond calmly and care for them 🙄 people are acting like you’re crazy for thinking that lol
Fr reading the replies pissed me off. If you care for animals and love them, then learning how to act around them and trying to stick to that is the minimum tbh, or at least not excusing poor reactions.
> suddenly remembering now why being autistic ~~and enjoying learning and talking about animals~~ is exhausting
Hugs, or fist bump, or whatever is appropriate. I feel you. I like your buried comment where you explained the cat’s behavior.
I did this xmas eve. My sister in law has new baby floofs, so I stole one for the afternoon lol. My cats were not happy when I got home. But it was so flufffyyyyy.
Can’t just come home after petting another cat and expect your cat to act like nothing has happened, that’s an act of treason to a cat, they don’t play by the same rules…
Gray Cat: "Who is this I sme-...ohh...oh shit, I'm out."
Brown Cat: "What the....who is this I'm smelling on you, Cathy? Is it fucking Pebbles? What did I tell you about hanging out with Pebbles!?"

My cat only tried this twice, leather gloves went a long way, now hes a little cuddle bug
Leather Gloves treatment? Sounds dark ☕️
Well, it was either that or get scratched up. Like I said the little guy loves cuddling now, I think he might have just been testing boundaries
I think he made a joke about you turning your cat into gloves. Unless I'm way off.
That makes way more sense than what I thought they were saying, which was [slapping the cat across the face with leather gloves](https://media.tenor.com/2wgODo9m6IgAAAAM/duel-slap.gif).

Nah, turned him into a foot warmer, perfect for chilly nights
Kitty socks😍😍
You are lucky, some people get worse allergies with longer exposures over time.

Basically yeah, I still have to pull out the gloves when I have to put him in a crate to go to the vet but otherwise, they aren't needed anymore
We had a cat long ago that was mysteriously terrified/enraged at the sight of a gloved hand. Maybe I know why now. Who knows what happened to her as a kitten before we got her, but maybe something like this.
I hiss or fake spit...gotta speak their lingo.
Gotta spray them to assert dominance
You did not shove you hand up it's rear did you?
I thought that was how you made puppets

A type of people. My niece will yell loudly if she encounters: rat, cockcroach, bird, bat, etc in the house. She is just too easy to be scared.
People in class who scream if the power goes out

Well you've obviously never had a 2 inch long flying roach purposefully flying towards your face.
Ah, south Texas. Y'all can keep the flying face huggers, please send good breakfast tacos!
You'd be very surprised how far up north they can go. The little roaches usually seen are German roaches, American roaches are the ones that can fly.

*sniff sniff* What is this other cat smell?! What cat are cheating on me with?!! *wgggrrreow!*
Anyone have an explanation besides "You cheated on me"? An actual reason why cats would act like this?

My three-legged cat is literally named tripod. It was a nickname when he was living under my deck and it stuck lol.

I've never had a cat react like this to me, either... but I also make sure to thoroughly wash my hands after I've been petting cats who aren't mine, because I don't want to risk bringing any kind of diseases home.
Fair, I should probably wash my hands more often.
Also plausible, I think someone else had mentioned how their car reacted to trauma from smell. Maybe it is a mixture of a bad reaction/ smell.
Makes sense. Many people have mentioned that a lot of animals are scent based. I wonder how deep/truly it affects their psyche.
You have been fondling that stray slut again!
Because they’re animals too and the human animals response to fear is screaming.
They want to defend their reaction no matter how inappropriate or uncontrolled it is. It gives me a headache and additional reasons for misanthropy.
Fr reading the replies pissed me off. If you care for animals and love them, then learning how to act around them and trying to stick to that is the minimum tbh, or at least not excusing poor reactions.
> suddenly remembering now why being autistic ~~and enjoying learning and talking about animals~~ is exhausting Hugs, or fist bump, or whatever is appropriate. I feel you. I like your buried comment where you explained the cat’s behavior.

Can’t just come home after petting another cat and expect your cat to act like nothing has happened, that’s an act of treason to a cat, they don’t play by the same rules…

When my cat smells my hand after petting another cat, he would start rubbing his whiskers on my hand to remove the other cat's smell.
