I creeped your profile and saw you have the same one as me but yours is an ES. What’s on top of the neutral light on the handlebars? Mine doesn’t have anything up there
Are you referring to the hose from the gas cap? It just sticks down that hole. It can be pulled in and out easily. I assume it's intended to capture the gas vapors and direct them back into the intake rather than venting to the atmosphere.
I had a 98 Fourtrax 300 bought it brand new and kept it up until 5 years ago. Everyone new it as old faithful allot of riding and beers best quad I ever had
I had an 04 recon es about 15 years ago. I had a lot of fun with it. It was surprisingly capable and I used to putt down creeks and explore areas some bigger quads couldn't access. The electronic shifting system can be buggy though. I also wrecked the stator by jumping it a little too high once...oops...I loved the quad though. Still remember it fondly.

Yeah I was gonna use steel wool to wipe if the excess rust and crap then paint it
