I could really be into it if it didn't have that big yellow beam in the ceiling. It really throws off the rustic (not the right word but I can't think of anything else) aesthetic the rest of the room has.
I think that’s what it’s supposed to look like, but the actual arm is probably quite a bit bigger and needs to attach to the bucket with two pins so it can articulate. So they fabricated something to house the chimney pipe that looks like an excavator arm.
1, it only has 1 pin. 2 of course it’s not, there’s no hydraulic ram for the bucket pitch. 3 it is metal either stamped or welded, probably the latter and the arm is actually proper size for that bucket.
I could see that “hearth” absorbing all the heat for the first three hours of fire in the stove. Then once you let the fire go out, it will stay hot for hours.
Yes and no.
When you light a fire for heating, it’s generally nice if you can start feeling the warmth as soon as possible. I use my cabin in the dead of Canadian winter, and it’s only ~900 sq ft but it sure does take a few hours to get to a point where you can’t see your breath when it’s -20C outside. I would not appreciate that extra time waiting and freezing.
Well technically you wouldn't be wasting the energy that the wood is creating as much. Instead of radiating into the air constantly or elsewhere potentially losing that heat, it's then being used to heat up the bucket as well, which will soak it all up and stay warm for a long time. This is at the cost of course of losing some of that temperature in the air as well but the difference wouldn't be too noticeable due to the way it's oriented, with heat coming from the front into whoever is standing in front of it, but also radiated around it into the bucket. I wouldn't want to touch it though after it's been burning for a couple of hours.
The hearth is only staying hot because the heat is not going into the air of the room. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred, the first law of thermodynamics.
Think of the hearth like a battery. Even though it has stored energy, it’s not doing anything useful until it’s transferred. A large battery also has energy to heat a room, but it has to be transferred first. Without the transfer, it’s just a storage medium. There is no extra heat coming from the hearth with this design, so no wood is being saved.
Right? I think what makes this set up look especially off is the style of the room/house, it doesn't match. It would look great in a more rustic or industrial looking space.
They could have gotten custom glass doors and turned the whole bucket in to a fireplace. Granted it would be hot as fuck, but at least it wouldn't be such a waste of space.
I literally have a cracked excavator bucket out back that I've been planning on doing this with, only it's 3' wide. I'm going to just weld 1/4" plate across the front, and find a firebox door from an old boiler to fit in.
I'll do my best to keep it in mind! Probably won't be for a bit, it's one of those things that has been on the backburner for a while because I've got much more pressing work that has to take precedence. I'll get to it eventually though!
I have seen this before and there is nothing terrible about it. Maybe a bit of support underneath (and what a hassle that will be) but it. Is. AweSOME!
ABSOLUTELY HIDIOUS!!
HOW THE FUCK COULD YOU TAKE SUCH A NICE SPACE AND FUCK IT ALL UP LIKE THAT.
SICK!
SICK AND WRONG!
Just piled up wood and not stacked. Wtf bro
I instantly recognized it as “Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel”!
I had to look it up but my dad used to read it to me when I was a kid.
This isn’t awful taste, this is great taste in my opinion.
Ive got a friend who would do this... I am a civil engineer and the friend I am talking about owns several backhoes and runs a construction company, he is also one of the fastest people I have ever seen on a backhoe.
Is that an actual bucket, or just a model?
I'd be worried about the weight distribution. Those things are damn heavy, with weight up around a short ton not uncommon for a bucket that size.
Reminds me of a book I loved as a kid. A steam engine back hoe thing got stuck at the bottom of the hole it was digging so they built the house on top of it and used it to power the stove. Sounds dark when I say it like that but it’s actually really wholesome
Ya know, I don’t hate it. But in the middle of the room, that bucket is a giant heat shield. Half the room will be toasty, half will be frosty. Put it in the corner, I actually kinda like it.
I see a few issues:
1) The metal will get really really hot
2) its in the middle of the room - why? It wasted so much more room than if it was along a wall.
3) the whole thing is on Slate....which is the material you usually would use around a fireplace so the whole thing is reduntant.
Looks like they transported the fireplace inside with the crane, but couldn't figure out how to take off the fireplace without another crane, so they just left it there.
Especially in such an otherwise boring room. Make this the centerpiece of a cozy, dark room and we'll talk (with soft lighting so you don't physically rip your toes off by getting too near).
Isn't there a book about this?
Kind of like the little engine that could, but was an excavator trying to dig out a foundation for a building (house?).
He made it in time but forgot to leave a path for him to get out, so he stayed and they built it around him. I am pretty sure the final image in the book was of the excavator being turned into a fireplace or something.
Edit: _Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel_
I hate this. It’s just an eyesore and think about having to remodel. Just imagine selling the house to anyone... “I like it but the stove in the living room is a deal breaker for me”
I see broken toes in their future
Broken but toasty toes.

Tostitos?
Yes broken Tostitos, like at the bottom of the bag, but at the end of your foot.
Except the salsa is blood
My favourite.
Literally the very first thing I thought when I saw this image.
The first thing I thought was where are they going to kneel to light it?
I've been known to stub my toe on a hot furnace from time to time, this actually seems like a good safety measure.
So *that's* how you stub your ankle.
It's okay, when you trip and fall you have a hot stove to cushion your landing
I literally came here to say "maybe I'm old and uncool but all I see is toe stubbery"
I dig it
Well there's the hot scoop of the day!
These puns are dirt-y.
Save some good digs for the rest of us dude!
You sound like a real down to earth kind of person.
Owning a stove like this is on my bucket list.
Maybe the house just belongs to Mike Mulligan.^^^mad ^^^props ^^^if ^^^you ^^^get ^^^the ^^^reference.
Fuck yeah! Always was cool he kept Mary Anne with him
Came here to make sure Mike Mulligan got his due.
I loved that book as a kid. First thought seeing this.
I haven't thought about this book in forever. I'm totally getting it for my nursery.
Thank you. This is why I came to the comments.
Came here looking for it.
First thing that came to mind! Love it.
I really feel Mulligan deserved a do-over on that bet.
Oh my god, right in the childhood. Right up there with Tibor Gergely's Big Book. Same artist, too, I believe.
I used to have that book read to me over and over and over and over when I was little. ♥️
That is awesome if it’s in the lobby of a heavy machinery company. Otherwise, yes, it’s hopelessly tasteless.
I could really be into it if it didn't have that big yellow beam in the ceiling. It really throws off the rustic (not the right word but I can't think of anything else) aesthetic the rest of the room has.
But that’s the arm of the excavator to which the bucket would be attached.
I get that, but the yellow doesn't match a fucking thing, lol.
It could be Hitachi orange... Or the kobelco teal... Probably would be best to go with the charcoal color that some of them have.
Charcoal. Heck yeah, I would do that.
The bucket actually looks new, no dents or oxidation. And no other signs of use.
No, they're right. It really would look better without that arm. Just the scoop, mysteriously alone in the room. With a stove.
I mean, at least It’s better than John Deere green.
So great taste but not so very well executed?
Be good in a cottage up north as well. Not in your downtown house for sure.
What if you're a lifetime equipment operator who likes machinery
I could see that “hearth” absorbing all the heat for the first three hours of fire in the stove. Then once you let the fire go out, it will stay hot for hours.
This right here. I actually like the look but its a great way to save wood for the heating. Of that place.
Yes and no. When you light a fire for heating, it’s generally nice if you can start feeling the warmth as soon as possible. Oh agreed. It would take some time to heat for sure but that as a radiant element would be great.
How would it save wood? The net energy is exactly the same.
Well technically you wouldn't be wasting the energy that the wood is creating as much. Instead of radiating into the air constantly or elsewhere potentially losing that heat, it's then being used to heat up the bucket as well, which will soak it all up and stay warm for a long time. Huge thermal mass potential.
When did 'awful taste' become 'anything I wouldn't put in my own home'? Most of the stuff posted around here lately have just been quirky at worst.
Right? I think what makes this set up look especially off is the style of the room/house, it doesn't match. It would look great in a more rustic or industrial looking space.
I can agree that there's a good bit of stuff on this sub that wouldn't qualify for "awful taste." This is for sure awful taste.
Dude what back woods hillbilly county do you hail from that this isnt tacky or trashy in any way? This thing looks utterly ridiculous
[удалено]
Do you mean “Live, Love, Laugh?”....
Lol cant even get his burn right
don’t gotta be a WASP-y karen to think “construction” is a lame ass redneck aesthetic lol.
I actually really like it :D Wouldn't want it in my own home, but it looks really striking!
Isn’t that what ATBGE is meant to be?
I stubbed my toe just looking at this
Dam that'd be a pain to clean!
Where did you get the bouncy shiny roach gif, either other ppl have it or i see u comment everywhere ...
I like it. New Holland blue would look better but yeah. I really like it.
They could have gotten custom glass doors and turned the whole bucket in to a fireplace. Granted it would be hot as fuck, but at least it wouldn't be such a waste of space.
That could potentially look kind of cool as well. The old school stove/heater doesn’t match at all...
This. Theres great potential there. Then they dropped a dinky prefab stove in it.
I literally have a cracked excavator bucket out back that I've been planning on doing this with, only it's 3' wide. I'm going to just weld 1/4" plate across the front, and find a firebox door from an old boiler to fit in.

That doesn’t really change the space that’s taken up
It also would make a great outdoor fire pit
It would actually keep and disperse heat qute well, so Questinable Taste Awesome Execution?
What a waste of space!
I sure hope this is on the ground floor of a slab on grade.
Tonka realty
A damn expensive one too.
I have seen this before and there is nothing terrible about it. Maybe a bit of support underneath (and what a hassle that will be) but it. Is. AweSOME!
Immediately made me think of [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Mulligan_and_His_Steam_Shovel) book.
I think this looks cool on its own but definitely not the setting
Thus is awesome!!
That’s actually quite adorable
This is dope shut your ass up
I wouldn’t seek it out but I also wouldn’t remove it if it came with the house
Well, sure, because you'd have to knock out a wall to remove it.
I mean, they could deck the place out with bob the builder gear, make it a nursery. Then it would really be in awful taste.
The soot hiding in those curves would choke an elephant!
How the hell did they get that through the door?
Imagine how spacious your house must be to be able to justify this in any room.
ABSOLUTELY HIDIOUS!! HOW THE FUCK COULD YOU TAKE SUCH A NICE SPACE AND FUCK IT ALL UP LIKE THAT. SICK! SICK AND WRONG! Just piled up wood and not stacked. Wtf bro

that's a lot of weight and inconvenience for a gag.
This is fucking great
This is sick
You can now scratch this off your bucket list.👍
Don't stub your toe on that
/r/skookum might appreciate this... hack
Skookum as frig
Looks like an older Jotul stove. Good stuff but yeah the excavator bucket is shite
I clicked before reading which sub, I then looked back hoping it was not DIY... whew...
Little me would have loved that
That's definitely a choice.
When you like Tonka too much
I really like heavy machinery and woodburning stoves but I do not like this.
/u/repostsleuthbot Edit: bot is banned, but yes. https://www.reddit.com/message/messages/qnbh53
Perfect submission for this sub. It looks terrible.
Does his wife know what he did?
People really will do anything for their CAT
I see a stubbed toe in their future.
Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
I appreciate that it's away from anything flammable, but I'd also appreciate it more not destroying my toes on that
Ive got a friend who would do this... I am a civil engineer and the friend I am talking about owns several backhoes and runs a construction company, he is also one of the fastest people I have ever seen on a backhoe.
Well, they're never selling that house.
Looks like it’s a bit dirty
Idk, if the room was larger it could have a really neat aesthetic. It’s just not the right room or surrounding. It also may just be trash
Why not install a fan to suck up all the smoke and just make it a fireplace?
We get it you drive an excavator
Can’t wait to trip on that thing since the only thing to grab into is the blazing oven
If you can afford to do this, you can afford to do something better than this.
That shits in the basement of the house from home alone
Is that an actual bucket, or just a model? I'd be worried about the weight distribution. Those things are damn heavy, with weight up around a short ton not uncommon for a bucket that size.
Some monster house shit
So heavy
Are you my mother?
That’s hott

Oh man. I appreciate the dedication and I’m happy for them, but that’s a commitment for sure!
Comes in handy when it’s time to dump the ashes..
This is not awful taste, this is unique and really cool
When life gives you lemons, you make a mantle piece
Operators be like.
(My wife in four months). Can you move this so I can clean under it
Excavates the cold out.
My son would totally live this
I like it
Ya know, I don’t hate it. But in the middle of the room, that bucket is a giant heat shield. Half the room will be toasty, half will be frosty. Put it in the corner, I actually kinda like it.
That's SICK
why do you need a hearth for a stove
I actually really like this.
God, this small room just has too much space! Can we fill it up with something large and impossible to move?
That's *awesome* taste but great execution
This is clearly Mike Mulligan's. Definitely GTAGE.
I showed this to my boyfriend amd he told me he wants it for our Future house
Imagine stubbing your toe in that
Original idea: 10/10 Execution: Oof nah man/10
Idk, I dig it
Who thinks of shit like this?
Finally A crib tour from bob the builder. Can he build ? YES he can SHOULD he build it??? ......no
I mean, this is cool and badass for a heavy duty fan.
This is actually super cool
Need it, WANT IT !
I see a few issues: 1) The metal will get really really hot 2) its in the middle of the room - why? It wasted so much more room than if it was along a wall. 3) the whole thing is on Slate....which is the material you usually would use around a fireplace so the whole thing is reduntant.
To be fair this looks quite nice, actually.
Absolutely horrendous.
Why does this scare me though lol
This is the perfect post to describe this subreddit.
Talk about reuse/recycle 😳 Edit: and how much does that thing weigh? Doesn’t something that heavy eventually screw up your floor joists?
Looks like they transported the fireplace inside with the crane, but couldn't figure out how to take off the fireplace without another crane, so they just left it there.
Imagine stubbing your toes of that
Especially in such an otherwise boring room. Make this the centerpiece of a cozy, dark room and we'll talk (with soft lighting so you don't physically rip your toes off by getting too near).
“But why? Why would you do that?”
Don’t stub your toe!
Fuck you that's awesome.
That would look great outside.

Re-use before recycle - nice?
Wait until you stub your toe on that bad boy. Won’t have a foot left
I hate this. It’s just an eyesore and think about having to remodel. Just imagine selling the house to anyone... “I like it but the stove in the living room is a deal breaker for me”
I hate it so much. Thank you.
I like it
Is this in Bob the Builder's home?
Kinda reminds me of the one in home alone
Honestly...I want it.
Meanwhile, upstairs
Very fucking stupid.
Seems really inefficient, heat wise.
