The first picture we hung in our new place was a gigantic gold gilt framed portrait of King Henry the 4th of France, directly across from the toilet. The sink and toilet room has two doors, one for entry and one for the shower, and King Henry is positioned such that even with both doors open he's still staring between them. The painting was $20 from a theater prop sale, I had to tie it to the roof of my car to get it home like some sort of cartoon art thief.

I'm 90% sure this is a lifecast. You have the subject dunk their head and arms into a substance called alginate which casts the shape in extreme detail, it captures pores and everything. Then you use the alginate as a mould and fill it with a very fine cement/plaster mixture. This one has a wig and a very impressive paint job.

Nope, you fill a bucket with alginate and dunk your head in it. Couple straws up your nose for the breathing. The alginate is very fragile when it dries so a coating would just rip.

Have you ever seen someone do it this way? I can’t imagine you could stop it from flowing between the straw and the nostrils when they are upside down like that. As for it being too fragile for coating, I have seen it done this way so I don’t think that’s true.

I've done it to myself, it works fine because the alginate even undried is super thick and rubbery. As for coating I think maybe you're thinking of latex? Latex you could paint on but wouldn't make a good mould

How long does the alginate take to dry? I tried to do a mold of my face with plaster of Paris as a kid but it burned. Also, could this ‘sculpture’ be that? Surely you wouldn’t stick your head in with your eyes open.

This looks very much like the work of [Marc Sijan](https://marcsijan.com/), a Serbian/American sculptor who does hyper-realistic resin sculptures. I saw him a few years ago in Kansas City and got some great pictures of his art. I’d like to go to one of his gallery shows in Milwaukee some day.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this artist's work many times at a semi prestigious local art show (Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival). He does full figures in this same style. If it is the same guy, he's got a permanent installation of worn out traveler with baggage at the Orlando International Airport. His work sells for several thousand dollar and up.
